    Boon Kriek Mariage Parfait

GRAIN cooperated with @letsdrool, a start-up in the event-szene. GRAIN offered it's first "Drool Public-Table" with a great event. Amy Paape, the event manager of grain is very friendly and I received a warm welcome when I arrived. I didn't hear of this restaurant before, it's pretty new, just opened last October and already in the top 100 out of 1800 restaurants in Zurich on tripadvisor! Congrats - very strong! So I was very excited to join this special event. I never attended a craft beer event before, nor did I had a dinner course matched with different beers. So far it was always about matching the wine . Up until recently beer was never much about the taste to me , till I came across craft beer and now after my visit to @graincraftexperience it opened up a whole new world of different craft beers with different flavors to me. For starters we had Boon Kriek Mariage Parfait craft beer from Brouwerij Boon, Lembeek, Belgium. At first I thought our host Dave poured us some wine. Looks can be deceiving as they say... the color originates from overripe cherries which are added to the beer (400 grams per liter). Dave, a Canadian living for 25 years in Switzerland, told us how it was made, that the brewers are using airborne yeasts, taken from the wild! how cool is that? I sensed that Dave really loves his role, his storytelling is very passionate and he likes to be around his guests. A very important point for me, the host should give you the feeiling that he is always present. So #letsdrool and find out how it did taste? I was very biased when it comes to 'flavored' beers, based on the ones that are out there in the mainstream like eve for example. But this one was totally different , altough bitter at first, after a few sips it changed to a pleasant feeling on my taste buds - real cherries! What a great start, I already fell in love with this place! 1st course - marinated fingerling the first course of the @letsdrool dinner at @graincraftexperience was a marinated fingerling with horseradish, viper's grass, hazelnut and shallots. Very fresh fish, so nicely presented and topped off with said sides, which enhanced the taste. I also liked the plate itself and the whole interior of the restaurant, especially that brick wall at the bar . This is another point for me, which is important. The interior design fits the theme of the restaurant and adds alot to the experience. Furthermore although the restaurant was full, it never felt loud inside, perfect to enjoy the food and the beers. Dave served us a Grimbergen Blanche Belgian Witbier and explained how it's made and that orange peels are one of the ingredients. Despite the beer having 6% alcohol it is very light in taste and has a hint of citrus, cloves and coriander. Great match to the also light fish. Beer snack - malt! feeding Mr @letsdrool with a snack - it's malt! Never saw this served before , it's highly addictive , much better than peanuts and of course it perfectly fits the theme! Dave told us in the near future @graincraftexperience will offer malt with several flavors, e. g. spicy or sweet. one more reason to go back there! Be sure to give it a try when you visit Grain! 2nd course - pork belly the second course of the @letsdrool event at @graincraftexperience was pork belly with green cabbage, black horseradish, onion rings and pale ale. All packed into three cute little balls. It may not look like much, but I can assure you they are little taste bombs!!! I was lucky to get a second serving, still I couldn't get enough of them on the side one of their house beers from @bachwegbrewing David Hasselhop American IPA - seriously the first thing that came to my mind was don't hassel the hop! dessert - beeramisu the dessert at the @letsdrool event at @graincraftexperience was #beeramisu - even the desserts here are beer inspired and live up to the restaurants name! So cool! the ingredients for this dessert were vanilla porter beer, mascarpone, pale ale malt and coffee ice cream - yummy! the coffee eh beer on the side was a @BachwegBrewing Porterhouse Vanilla Porter - Dave explained there's always a debate in the beer community about what's a porter and what's a stout. But you'll easily notice the difference in taste, the stout is more bitter, e. g. Guinness, which to me is like a very bad cup of coffee haha. The Vanilla Porter, which was paired here with the beeramisu is less bitter and easier to drink, most important it's a great match! It was a fantastic evening at this #droolevent and I want to thank Dave, Amy and their grain team for making such a wonderful tasting experience , it was truly outstanding! Last but not least also thanks to the @letsdrool team for creating this event - rock on! Already looking forward to the next drool event at Grain on 21 March 17 for burger , beers and bowling I already got my ticket how about you? follow me on instagramm: https://www.instagram.com/life_is_too_short_for_bad_food/

BRAUEREI. You got my attention!…read more We landed in Zurich for an overnight layover, and set out exploring the concrete jungle that evening. We were looking for a place that was vegan/restriction-friendly, and originally decided on the restaurant right by Steinfels. But after looking at the menu, we all agreed this was the better choice for our group of six, in terms of food selection and prices. Holy moly, my fellow American yelpers will also balk at the prices once you take a peek at the menu because meals will definitely be $25-$40 for dinner for one. And that's just for a dish! So the boo and I split a tuna burger, which was so tenderly made and perfectly seared. I loved that the staff put in extra effort to cut our burger in half after we briefly mentioned to the server that we'd be splitting this meal. It's the little things that matter! Portion sizes were the perfect amount of filling--not too much or too small. I eyed my friend's cauliflower starter which was literally an uncut head of cauliflower...which did not look easy or appetizing to eat. Service was very friendly and swift. They were pretty full, but didn't have to wait at all to be seated by the hostess. Our waiter didn't speak English that well, so we got another guy who was great and cracked some jokes with us. We all got beers--the weizen was yum and the perfect amount of zingy flavor and hops for my tastes. Beer is literally the best way to destress, amirite? We also got water upon being seated, which was great to keep us awake and rejuvenated. Their restrooms are very clean, although a bit closer in quarters compared to most restaurants back home. I just didn't feel anything spectacular from Steinfels. We didn't have any other dinner place to compare it to in Zurich because we only had one night here, but referencing it to places back in the States and other cities in Europe, this was nothing much to write home about.

First the beer. Outstanding. I'm a big NEIPA fan and wouldn't normally order this in Europe but decided wth... it was fantastic. The kind of NEIPA I'd order on the regular back home. Also had a Hefeweizen bc I had to. Also great. The food. So they have a small tapas menu but was looking for more, so looked at the dinner menu. Unfortunately the dinners didn't fit in my company allowed price range (Switzerland is way too expensive), so tapas it was! Honestly it was perfect. Cheese w chutney, salami, falafel and some local meatballs. All delicious and filling. Great experience. Just lower your cost Switzerland and I'd try more! I'll return next time I'm in Basel.

I arrived at Matt & Elly during the pre-dinner time when they have a very limited menu. I did not want a burger so I stuck with the beer and the wifi for an hour or two. By the time for the kitchen to open, I was ready to head somewhere else. Delicious craft beers, a friendly bartender who spoke perfect English, a comfortable space to sit inside (heated area outside) and a speedy wifi. This was a superior spot. There were a few other 'beer geeks', I'm assuming, out braving the cold for fifteen minutes before Volta opened its doors at 17.00 this evening. We were, fortunately, let in a bit early and greeted warmly by the bar staff. One may either order at the bar or wait to be served at table. We opted for the former. The 'tender was both friendly and upbeat, in an American way, actually, and ordering was a charm. One is also able to pay straight away or start a tab. -so nice to have the option. What struck me most about Volta was its design. The place has very ambient (read: dim) lighting, the kind I find so very appropriate for a lounge/pub/bar type joint. Volta seems to have benefited from an incredibly savvy interior designer as well. It's decorated in a mix of natural wood and metal furnishings. The floor appears to be polished concrete. The floor has a mix of two-top bar tables, narrow counter-like spots, group tables and window seating. Industrial-looking light fixtures hand from various points along the ceiling and I spied at least one free-standing, old-timey Hollywood spotlight. -really lent some charm to the place. The music was a curious blend of Andrew Sisters-meets-Techno that Volta had playing just a few decibels louder than the nearly empty place warranted. It was both a bit off-putting and distracting. The menu is comprised of things to nosh on, wines, spirits, and, although there are six tap handles at either beer station behind the bar, only two beers: an IPA and a lager. We each ordered a wee nibble and two IPAs. My order of 'salted lard' (my translation) was ample (seemed about two tablespoons' worth) and served with lovely, warm slices of bread. I enjoyed it very much and felt it to be a good deal at 7 franks. The pair of Weisswürste mit Senf and a hefty Swiss-style (read: soft all over) Brezel--garnished with sesame seeds not salt--(13chf) went down well with the hubs. The 3dl (just under 12 oz) glasses of IPA were fine, not fab. The usual bite I've come to associate with IPA was missing and Volta's is a more floral and less 'hop-y' brew than I'm used to. There was also a sweetness to the finish I hadn't expected. It's a well-made beer, but not what I am looking for in an IPA, unfortunately. I'm encouraged by the number of tap handles and would expect that Volta will unveil more in their beer repertoire as time goes on. A nice Porter would be much appreciated in the upcoming Winter months, am I right? Given that this place is a stone's throw from the Novartis complex, I can well imagine Volta becoming *the* go-to spot after work. For Basel, Volta is a mini-revelation, and, I would imagine, will be leading the burgeoning brew pub scene in town. **generous outside seating **toilets shared w/ adjoining music venue
