Tucked away from the main drag, it feels like a hidden speakeasy that rewards you for finding it. The space is cozy and dimly lit, with vintage vibes and a laid-back energy that makes you want to stay awhile. The cocktail list is thoughtful and well-executed, with classics done right and a few creative twists. I went with a Guinness beer. What really stood out was the vibe, relaxed but polished, never pretentious. It's a great spot for a quiet conversation, a low-key date, or a nightcap after wandering around The Rocks. But the signage is pretty good so it's not hard to find the entrance. On a chilly winter night, we made our way down to the dimly lit, very cozy space for a couple of drinks. After gaping at the amazing whiskey selection and many minutes of deliberation over the menu, I selected the Bushmaster Sour and my sister went with a Penicillin. Though we decided not to partake this go around, they also offer a bunch of whiskey flights that look wonderful and are very reasonably priced as well. The masterful bartender whipped up our drinks in a jiff, and was super friendly throughout. We took our drinks to the next room over, where there were a handful of hightops and stools. My drink was hands down the best sour I've ever had (a drink I don't usually opt for) and probably one of the better whiskey drinks I've had as well--I have consumed many a whiskey drink. It was the perfect balance of flavors while not overwhelming the whiskey itself. The combo of citrus, lemongrass, ginger, and tea tree left my belly toasty and comfy for the evening. My sister enjoyed her penicillin a lot as well, though as she noted, had never had a penicillin similar. It was much savory than any I've ever tried, but very good as well. I would absolutely recommend Doss House for any whiskey or speakeasy fanatics in Sydney. And if whiskey isn't your thing, they've got plenty of other cocktails and a good beer and wine selection as well!

Typical dark lit atmosphere. Loved all of the old sewing machines. Menu is eclectic with nice higher end drink options. Had the curly fries. Be warned it's not noted that there's paprika on them and the spice was almost too much. Thankfully we had a pitcher of water on the table. Staff was fine. I loved the ambiance and the fun decor (tons of antique sewing machines). The entrance was also much easier to find than expected - it really isn't hidden like a speakeasy at all. Rather, the 'storefront' sets the mood for what is to come in the bar. We sat at the bar so we could watch the bartenders work their magic. Our bartender in particular was super friendly and when he found out that we were from out of the country, gave us a ton of tips on the NSW/Sydney CBD alcohol and club/bar restrictions in case we wanted to go out. He also was kind enough to let my companion sample a Tim Tam after finding out she'd never had one before! I ordered a chocolate based drink called "That one time at band camp" which was a perfect substitute for the dessert we didn't have during dinner. It's described as a s'more in a glass and it was just that! It was beautifully presented and the first few sips were wonderful, but it got a little too thick and sweet at the end.

The menu has changed slightly but the feelings of amazement and satisfaction after each meal remain. Harry now works out of the kitchen, but the menu still very much is his. There's elements of Japanese, a strong presence of Italian and Australian, the quintessential Modern menu of this culinary diverse dining landscape we live in. The VEAL SCALLOPINI is amazing served on garlic mash and surrounded by a mote of beef jus. Just like the SLOW COOKED PORK there's delicate technique put in to ensure the tenderness in the meat. Both served with green for balance and crunch powerful protein plates in their own right. A newer menu item perfect for brunch is the SMOKED SALMON SALAD. Served with it's side house mayo it's perfectly balanced with an equal balance of salad and fish. Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, the venue has an advantage over many cafes in the area as it is fully licensed and close enough to the centre of all the Crows Nest action, but far enough from the hustle to escape from work, with the family and your mates. The GRILLED SALMON was beautifully cooked and served on Asian greens and sweet potato mash, drizzled with soy and honey there's just the right amount of sweetness and balance between the potato and honey. Its presentation on the rectangle plate almost like a comet. The GRAIN FED EYE FILLET is a cut about an inch and a half or so thick and so you can appreciate the precision in its medium well success, perfectly seared on the outside with a nice juicy centre! 2 prawns accompany it with asparagus, corn and mushroom gravy and there's a slight play on the surf'n'turf with healthier bits weaved in - loved this. In reminiscing over the old menu, there have been slight changes to the presentation in some dishes, while others, as beautiful as they were (like the SOFT SHELL CRAB OPEN BURGER) are no more, however leave behind a great legacy in today's menu. An extensive collection, much more than what is listed on the website and these guys definitely know their stuff and happily help you discover the good, the rare, the history, what works with what and all without forcing you up the price ladder. If you don't want whisky they also stock Wayward Brews. Sat at the bar, we started by paring a Port Askaig 100 Proof with a Midnight Barley Cowboy Hopped Porter which in hindsight should have finished with as an intense smokiness that works well together. We tried a few others between us. A Benromach, Amrut Fusion and a couple of others while steering clear of the popular Japanese offerings. To eat we ordered the ribs (our mate refused to share), haloumi fries (great), and scotch eggs (perfect between sips of whisky). After reaching my three whisky limit and three and a bit hours later it was time to go, and we were well satisfied with the food, and pleasant friendly guys taking us on an exploratory journey into the world of whisky.
