We love this brewery! (Visited Dec 7 2019 but just now posting review ... sorry!) During our jaunts around town we noticed this brewery and finally went by on our last afternoon. Our bartender was very friendly, the beers were good, and the dinner menu looked appetizing though we already had plans elsewhere. The best brewery that we tried in Sydney. Pete was our main bartender and he was extremely helpful. The wide array of beers is something that was oddly missing in most other breweries and brewpubs in the city. They have a good kitchen as well. We had already bounced from a few speak easy bars before heading here, so we'd already eaten, but we really liked this place because of the vast selection of beers. It didn't hurt that they stayed open a little later than some of the other bars in the area, because we weren't ready to head home. Who knows though? Maybe they were closing and just too nice to say so? I ordered a red ale that the bartender recommended and the rest of my group ordered cocktails. I was happy with what I got and so was my group. I just wish I'd taken note of the beer I ordered, so I could recommend it, because I am very picky about my reds and this was a nice one. I also liked the chill ambiance and it reminded me of the many little brew pubs we have back at home in Oregon. This review is based off the beer only and not the food. It is a small pub with some semi exotic or more old school brews. Exactly what I love tapping into some of the best types of European and American beers from around the world. They do not try too hard to be too hip, it's an honest beer bar with some very informative information on each brew taking away most of the guess work but allowing a pleasant surprise. read more

Cute place. Quite pricey for a small burger but it was late and I don't have many choices left... Good selection of craft beer though. Didn't know tipping was *not* required in OZ... (no wonder the waitress gave her manager a dirty look - at first I thought the 10% her manager quoted was too low) now I felt stupid applying the American standard here. The only reason why this place gets 3 stars is because of their astronomical prices. I get it - you're a craft brewery and you're in the CBD, but seriously - $25 for a "vegetarian sharing plate" consisting of veggies, dips and lavosh? $7 for a HALF PINT of beer? It's brewed down the road! Why is the price of this beer so freakin expensive? Surely Aussie beer should be cheaper, not even more of a ripoff *sorry price of beer rant over* It makes me extra PO'ed since it's a super awesome bar that I actually want to eat and drink in. I just need to pay rent too, so I'll give this place a miss. Redoak's prices are more for the well-heeled crowd they clearly go after. The barmen are super cute, too. read more

Sydney's not as famous for its brewed beer as some other places, perhaps, but Redoak are the exception to the rule. This finely-decorated beer hall was crazy busy when I stopped in on a Friday at 7pm. By keeping a sharp eye open we were soon able to grab a few stools to sit down. There's a room for drinking on the left hand side, and a dining area on the right. At the end of the night I decided that it's a wonderful place to sample beers, not such a great place to eat. They brew all their own beers, and most are very good. Their lauded IPA was sharp and excellent. Their award-winning bitter was fresh, just tart enough, and low-alcohol enough that you could have a few without getting too wobbly. I wasn't impressed by the too-fruity Summer Weiss, though. There are over a dozen to try, and while none are cheap there are usually two sizes to try. We sat down to eat a little later. It was a good atmosphere, air-conditioned and roomy and bright. The menu had some interesting meat and fish dishes. My 300g steak was one of the softest and tastiest I've ever had. The rest of my party had meals that they said were flavourful but were very skimpy; they both left hungry. Quality was definitely there, but not quantity, and at $26-$33 per dish it wasn't really value for money. I'll definitely be back to sample new beers, but I won't bother with the grub. So was here last night, was pretty good. Better than a pub, more sociable than the small bar scene. The thing I hate about a lot of small bars is that the lighting is so poor because some hipsters are just too tragic to wanna look like, but it also makes you feel way sleepy and reminds you at earlier in the night just how old you're getting. But not here, good lighting, lots of seating - although I recommend making a reservation, because even then you'll have to kick people off your table (pretending to be me, to my face, ain't gonna work) and there is plenty to drink other than beer. Being gluten free makes beer drinking hard, painful work, and I wasn't in the mood to sacrifice myself last night so stuck with wine. Ordered the seafloor platter which wasn't as seafoody as expected and had thick layers of hardened fat on top of the pate - we were told to just scoop it off. What? I'm not kidding when we got it off had to stop a friend who arrived late from swooping in and eating it because he thought it was a potato. In hindsight, should've let him eat it. Food portions were small from what I saw my friends eating, but looked nice. I remember being taken to dinner here about 10 years ago when was still new to Sydney and remember it being much more expensive ans snooty - but I was a country bumpkin which might be why - but either way it's not like that now. Seats started filling up by about 6 ( Fri night) so if not reserving, name someone go early and take up a table like a Nigel. Ohh and one thing though, make yourself really noticeable at the bar - there are stools along the bar and as I'm a munchkin, people who were sitting down looked taller than me so the bartenders wouldn't see me/ignored me. Props to the bartender who served me early in the night and would point me out to other bartenders if he was busy and couldn't serve me, I hope you spend up my $3 tip big my man. read more

A go-to for Americans looking for great craft beer in Sydney. With the US being further ahead than Australia in the craft beer boom, we had a difficult time finding a place that served its own brew with a wide variety of selections and decent food. This place ended up serving up great beers and food, and the staff was extremely friendly. Between the 7 of us, we ordered almost every beer on the menu and tried a variety of the pizzas and apps. Everything was a winner. The only downside was you cannot fill a growler here for take home (something we are accustom to in the US). But when we inquired about that, the manager gave us great suggestions for where we may want to go and was super engaging and helpful in general. They even gave us all Red Oak tshirts as a souvenir for our visit. So fun and appreciated. Definitely give these guys a visit if you are thirsty or hungry (pro tip: walking distance from the Sydney Harbor Bridge, so a fun spot to have a few celebratory beers after a climb!). A wonderful oasis in sydney CBDs with an outstanding choice of beers, matching food and a great atmosphere! Very interesting beer tasting / food tasting boards. I'm not big on pale ales or bitters, but both meat and seafood tasting boards were great! They also do beer paddles. Unless you just fell off a cruise ship, you should know the prices in Sydney seem high until you convert it into U.S. dollars. The prices are in line with a tourist area. I found Red Oak while looking for a place to have dinner on trip advisor. I was not disappointed by the food, service or the beer. I was served by a young man from England who was very helpful and polite. I plan on returning before my trip is over. I think there should be more emphasis on craft beer and food in Sydney and less on coffee. I had the Baramundi which was very good. I also sampled the pale ale and breakfast beer, my preference being the first. read more

The beer here is simply outstanding. A great selection from their own brewery, which something for everyone - assuming you're a beer lover, though I'm not sure why you'd been heading to a beer cafe if you weren't. They've won many well-deserved awards and it's always hard to drag myself away. The food doesn't let down the side either, with a selection of really high quality pub-like meals complete with beer recommendations for each. The menus rotate regularly, though you can usually bet on a fish, poultry, beef, pork and vegetarian dish. Occasionally one will be a bit overpowering, depending on your tastes, but they are few and far between. The only downside is the occasional noise because the dining and bar area is adjacent, but it's a sacrifice I'm more than willing to make, plus it's mainly on a Friday night that it's busiest. read more

I'm on business in Sydney, Australia and used Yelp this evening to find a nice location to get a beer or two and some light food. A pint of beer might be $9 Aus and that sure seems high, but I guess it's close to the norm in Sydney. The beer at Red Oak is good, but the place is not air conditioned, and there's certainly nothing noteworthy about the food or the environment of the restaurant. Just an average little beer joint with only a few taps and some beer bottles on the wall. I see nothing to tell me why this is rated so highly. It was quite surprising to go the distance I did to find the spot and then see that it's just a hole-in-the-wall pub and without much appeal. Yelp brought me here and perhaps I'm being a little harsh with my rating but I'll stick with it. Big disappointment. read more
