Such a positive and welcoming place to Train BJJ. My 4yr old daughter has been training for about 8months. We have noticed huge improvement in her confidence. Coach Alex and Professor Phil are patient and take their time to explain things. My daughter only speaks and understands Spanish. They both take the time to make sure she understands the move they're working on. My youngest daughter also started training just recently. We are so happy we chose Gracie Barra Whittier. We look forward to our daughter future growths.

What a great place to learn/train in jiu jitsu. The Instructors are dedicated, patience. They have the way of making complicated techniques, simple. I am a senior and it's been a great journey for me and would encourage you, regardless of age to try it out. #lovebeingawhitebelt

My 9-year-old son enjoys the lessons, and I see him building confidence. The classes are great; they divide the kids by age and have a roughly even number of boys and girls. My son's favorite part is that at the end of each lesson, they play a quick game of dodgeball with oversized yoga ball.

Brought our 5 year old son to try Jiu Jitsu in November 2021. We were recommended through a friend. Gracie Barra offered a 1 week trial for free, no catch. For his age group it was either a M/W and Sat class or T/Th and Sat class. He loved it, so we signed up! The coaches are patient and attentive with the kids. And stern when needed. My child has learned a lot in the few months we have been there. His focus has improved a lot as well. They were also very kind and accommodating when we needed to take a break in January. They let us pause payments to take care of a family emergency. We truly enjoy coming to watch our son and the other kids learn and have fun at the same time!

Do they have a class on saturday? Their website doesn't have a clasd schedule.

Yes, classes are offered on Saturdays 👍

What are the prices for kids and adults?

Great question. Many people who are looking to start Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu often are curious about pricing. We offer a simple 4 week trial for each of our programs. The trial is only $49 and allows perspective students to try any program we offer. I…

Let me add a review as an adult who joined the Gracie Jiu Jitsu family in Whittier just 3 months…read moreago. TL:DR - Starting my Jiu Jitsu journey here has been one of the best decisions for me, as a martial art and personally. The coaches are very competent and help maintain an atmosphere of cooperation and learning that is so crucial. If you're thinking of trying Jiu Jitsu, especially if you're a lightweight person like me, definitely try the 10 day trial at least. You won't regret it. Long version: I've been a featherweight for the past 13 years of my life and always wanted to get into martial arts because honestly, if I ever get into a fight, it's going to be against someone heavier/stronger than me. My dad's a cop who taught me some basic punching form when I was a kid and luckily, knowing how to throw a real punch has saved me many a time throughout my school years dealing with jerks who wanted to pick a fight. I trained in Wing Chun for a bit, but always felt like I would get destroyed by anyone bigger than me if I were to use the techniques, which came true (did some light wing Chun sparring with a friend who's bigger and knew no wing Chun or any martial art: I got pwned). A year ago, I trained in judo for two months and while I thought the sensei was awesome and the dojo had great reviews, all it takes is a sparring session with a dude 50 lbs heavier than me and with an ego to prove to get an injury. A few of the guys there were very experienced but a bit cocky, so it wasn't the best learning environment, no fault of the sensei, who did his best to instruct and balance working with the kids and adults in the same class. Finally worked up the courage to try out the free 10 day trial at Gracie Jiu Jitsu Whittier and I am ever grateful I did. Coach Alex and Coach Jacob are stand-up guys with heart and genuine passion for the art. I appreciated how they've been able to create an atmosphere of cooperation, learning, and hard work whenever I've gone to train. It was seriously completely different from any of my other martial arts experiences. Because the instruction is so detailed and the focus is on really honing each technique until it's second nature, I progressed more in this discipline than any of my previous training. I'm not going to talk about the effectiveness of BJJ because we all know it's effective, but suffice it to say that it's the perfect martial art for me to finally even the odds against someone bigger and stronger than me. I've grown a lot throughout my journey here and my personal confidence has grown into other areas of my life. I've always thought it was cliche, but now I feel like I honestly know what it means now to say that "it's more than just a martial art, it's a way of life." Sad to say that after training 3x a week here for the past 3 months, I had to stop because I'm moving to Oregon. But! I've already found a certified training center up where I'll be living to continue my Gracie Jiu Jitsu journey. Thanks to Coach Alex, Coach Jacob, and all my other friends here who've been so helpful, challenging, and encouraging throughout my time here. It has really changed my life for the better.

I have been there for almost 2 years. He has been one of the best instructors I have had!read more

Check out who he has trained under, trained with, and trained up. There is a reason Lucas is such a popular and well known figure in the Brazilian Jiujitsu community. There is nobody harder working for his students than Lucas. But be warned: as nice and caring as Lucas is, he won't let you slack off. He won't let you cheat yourself. Which is why we love him. This gym is full of all types. We have competitors who have brought home world championship titles in Gi, no Gi, under all rule sets, and at all weight and belt levels. We also have those who, like me, don't focus on competing but are there more as "sport practitioners" who use it as a way to get in shape, learn something new, and push ourselves to be better. We have those there solely for weight loss and confidence building. We have those that take it for self defense, and others who train because it helps their mental health. The kids program is robust and extremely well run with daily classes, parents, come have your child get some confidence and burn off all their energy before bed. I pray I can train as long as physically able to under Lucas and beside my team mates here at Checkmat La Habra.

The classes balance the technicality of martial arts with core values like discipline, confidence, and respect, all while maintaining a lighthearted, age-appropriate environment that keeps the kids engaged and having fun. He truly goes the extra mile for his students and their families, hosting seasonal events that foster a wonderful sense of community. This review has been long overdue, and I'm so glad I finally had the chance to write it…read more About a year ago, I decided I wanted my boys to start jiu-jitsu. As a mom, I believe it's so important for children to learn basic self-defense not because I expect something bad to happen, but because I want them to have the confidence and skills to protect themselves if they ever need to. At first, my boys were nervous and intimidated. We visited a few schools before making a decision, but from the moment we walked into Teragi, we knew this place was different. Everyone made us feel like family. The professors and coaches are exceptional not only because of their experience and skill, but because they genuinely care about every child. They encourage, support, and meet each child where they are. I especially want to mention my youngest. Jiu-jitsu didn't come naturally to him at first, and he struggled to understand the techniques. The professors and coaches were incredibly patient and never made him feel like he was behind. They allowed him to learn at his own pace, and now it's amazing to see how much his confidence and skills have grown. That patience meant so much to our family. There's no pressure for kids to be the best. Every child learns differently, and the professors and coaches truly understand that. Since we homeschool, Teragi has become more than just a place to train. My boys have made wonderful friendships, and we've found an incredible community. I also have to mention how clean the academy is! It never has that old gym smell and is always welcoming. I've watched both of my boys grow not only physically, but mentally and emotionally. They're more confident, disciplined, and respectful. If you're on the fence about jiu-jitsu because you don't like the idea of your child being on the ground, I completely understand. I felt the same way. But the reality is that many real-life self-defense situations end up on the ground, and knowing what to do can make all the difference. Thank you, Teragi, for creating such an incredible environment for our children. We are so grateful to be part of the Teragi family, and I couldn't recommend this academy more.

The owners, professors, and coaches have cultivated a superb gym culture. This gym is safe, friendly, and supportive. The facility is modern and clean, and they've invested in a foam block subfloor beneath the mats for softer landings. As far as I know, this is the only gym in the area that offers women-only classes four times per week and a bi-monthly community open mat for gentlemen 40 years and older. My kids train here after school 4-5 days a week, and they love it. The kids' professors and coaches are experienced and amazing teachers. I'm especially thankful for the young coaches who were so patient and kind to my boys when they were hesitant and shy after first starting. And my pocketbook is especially thankful for the discounted rates for additional family members. If you're looking for a place where the whole family can train, grow, and feel welcome, I can't recommend Teragi highly enough.
