I'll give a short and longer, in-depth review. Short Review: If you are looking for a place to learn and practice Jiu Jitsu, get fit, and/or have fun, at any age or level, you cannot do better than Fulshear Gracie Barra. You owe it to yourself to try out a class! Long Review: My daughter and I were looking for a place to learn BJJ together. She was 17 and new to grappling and I was in my mid 40's. While I had been in various martial arts and wrestled in high school, I was very apprehensive about getting into this at my age. My daughter, too, was a bit apprehensive as she had never experienced any grappling is petite. When looking for a place to learn and train, the location for Gracie Barra Fulshear was perfect for us and I had heard good things about the Barra schools, so I figured I'd stop by and check it. Upon my first visit, I met Professor Daniel, who was very accommodating, helpful, and put me at ease. After our first class, my daughter and I were both hooked and have been going regularly ever since. Professor Daniel and Coach Michele have been exceptional in the instruction and care of the students. They are very good at meeting you at your level and helping you learn and grow where need be. Being in my mid 40's, I have experienced a great deal of instruction in sports, school, etc., either first hand or in my kids many, many activities and I can say that this is some of the best instruction I have witnessed. More importantly, Professor is concerned with you progressing and learning, but not at the expense of your health or well-being. I've seen him and Coach Michele teaching the younger classes and I am as equally impressed with how they handle students at all ages and levels. The fellow students in our adult class are all great people and very supportive of one another. It is just absolutely fabulous instruction, people, and environment. To be honest, BJJ is not always easy for me, at times struggling with either a technique, getting worn out, or just the pains and aches of being a bit older, but Professor is always helpful in helping you address any issues and move past them, as are my fellow students. That said, it can be challenging, and you often work with others different than you. While they might be bigger or smaller, older or younger, slower or faster, or more or less advanced than you, everyone challenges me in a different way, and practice and variety is highly encouraged, which I find very refreshing and honestly love about it. One last point, while it may not be the most important aspect, I really appreciate how tidy and clean everything is, which is really just a nice added benefit to such a wonderful place. I'm a brown belt who has travelled a lot, training at 8 different schools over 12 years, and I can confidently say that Professor Daniel Vitti is the highest caliber of teacher, coach, mentor, competitor and family man, humbly and respectfully spreading the art of Brazilian Jiujitsu in the most honorable and consistent way, and building a remarkable community of great people, talented practitioners and skilled coaches in the process. I had the privilege of training with he and his incredible group while working next door- I could train in the morning, shower in the clean facilities, and walk straight to work, always having a better day at work on those days from getting a good dose of truly expert instruction and friendship. His way with people was consistently respectful and just delightful. He was even gracious enough to invite me for some extra lunchtime training :) Unfortunately life got a bit unsteady for me during covid and I moved away, but I will always cherish the memories and hold Gracie Barra Fulshear in the highest regard, thinking of them often and constantly recommending them as a great family-owned BJJ school, outstanding for kids as well. I started training at Gracie Barra Fulshear because when I would watch my son Zephaniah on the mat he looked like he was having so much fun. I have continued training for so much more then that. I have amazing training partners that look at out for you and truly want you to excel, a supportive Professor that cares about your progress and although I embrace the fact that I suck at BJJ LOL. It has tremendous health benefits to it. I have been working out for a large part of my life, played various types of sports and I have never had a workout like a 5 min round of sparring. If you consistently or semi-consistently train like me you will naturally become more agile, flexible and stronger which is great the older that I get. Lastly, I believe that this art is a good self-defense system, a great workout but I also think that it is bigger then that. We LOVE GB Fulshear! Our son started BJJ when he was 3 at another location and it was just not a good fit for us. He asked to start again, so we tried the GB Fulshear. Professor Daniel and Coach Michelle are Excellent with their students!! They teach respect, basic BJJ skills, learning to win and lose with grace and how to interact with different skill levels. They have incredible patience while expecting and requiring the kids to listen and mimic the moves. The structure of their class is great to get a balance of learning and fun. They learn 1-3 new skills each class, repeat these moves for a few weeks and then play games that help with agility, hand eye coordination, speed. If you are looking for a martial arts disciple that teaches skill, discipline, respect and is a great physical activity, Gracie Barra Fulshear is your place!! My kids have been doing Jiu-Jitsu with professor Daniel since they opened. I can't say enough good things about him and his family. I believe coach Michelle and professor Daniel have the perfect balance in regards to teaching the kids. Both of my kids love going to Jiu-Jitsu. Since not all kids are the same age or size in a class they always make sure the kids are paired with kids at the same level and size. They are constantly monitoring the students, making sure they are practicing the moves correctly and being respectful with their partners. Going to Jiu-Jitsu has helped my children to listen, to follow directions, to take turns, to have better discipline, and helped them with self-defense among many other things they will use for the rest of their lives. My husband is a BJJ Blackbelt and I recently started training myself, so while I am personally brand new to the practice, I've visited academies all over the world. I can confidently say that Gracie Barra Fulshear is one of the best schools we've ever had the pleasure of being a part of. Not only are Professor Daniel and his wife Michele (a skilled Brown Belt herself) knowledgeable and patient, they have created a true family environment at GBF. It is also an exceedingly safe place for women and kids to train, with a nearly 50% female membership, which is unheard of in the jiujitsu world. My family loves Gracie Barra Fulshear! We have 3 children currently enrolled ages 6, 8, and 10. They all love going to jiu jitsu after school! The professor and coaches have a calming presence, they have incredible teaching strategies to teach these young kids real jiu jitsu moves from their first lessons and they also make it incredibly fun and positive. We feel this is an investment worthwhile for our kids that they can use the skills they learn at jiu jitsu now and will remember it in the future. We switched our son from GB Katy due to our work schedule and distance from Hom to GB Fulshear a and it has been an equally great experience. Our son has been able to adapt and continue growing his Jiu-Jitsu. Professor Daniel, coach Michele and all the staff and students are very friendly. Very family oriented school for Brazilian jiu jitsu. Curriculum is easily followed and Professor Daniel and Coach Michele are amazing! Our whole family trains here, myself, my husband, our boys (11 and 9) and our 3 year old little girl. We love being able to train together and we haven't experienced a more welcoming and family friendly environment. We have made life long friends here and it is a whole different kind of "therapy."
