I am sharing my experience to warn both returning and prospective patients about the current business practices at Stephens Dentistry. Four years ago, I had a crown placed at this office for almost $2000. Recently, the crown prematurely cracked and failed. When I contacted the office to have it addressed, I was informed that because the practice is under "new ownership," any previous warranty is completely void. They strategically kept the practice's established name, reputation, and all patient records (down to using the same email address!) to maintain business continuity, but legally shielded themselves from any accountability or warranties on previous dental work. Their idea of a "goodwill gesture" was a mere 10% discount on a replacement crown, bringing the cost to over $1,800. This is absolutely exorbitant and roughly twice the price of what other dentists in the Evanston area charge for equivalent or better work. When you pay top dollar for dental work, you expect exceptional quality and accountability for their work, but Stephens Dentistry offers neither. To anticipate the practice's likely response to this review: in addition to bluntly stating they voided all past liabilities due to the ownership change, they will probably also claim they cannot honor the warranty because I haven't been back for regular cleanings at their specific practice over the last four years. I have maintained my dental hygiene, just not with them. Why? Because Stephens Dentistry is out-of-network for basically all insurances and outrageously expensive. The previous management once admitted to me their fees were intentionally set at the 85th percentile of local practices, and it is abundantly clear the new ownership operates with the exact same "cash cow" mindset. In a university town like Evanston, operating with such an unscrupulous, profit-first mentality is deeply disappointing. If you are a long-term patient, be aware that your past warranties mean absolutely nothing to the new owners. If you are a new patient, be prepared for highly inflated pricing. I have decided to take my business elsewhere and strongly advise others to do the same.

That orthodontist (see my other review) was telling me to accept what I considered a very unacceptable result after using three different types of alignment methods (lingual braces, clear aligners and then regular braces). Dr. Walvoord listened to my concerns and evaluated my teeth. He agreed with me about the alignment issues and discussed possible ways they could be addressed. I started treatment with him and was delighted with the contrast to the experience with my previous orthodontist. In particular, Dr. Walvoord has a very light touch and does everything he can to cause minimal discomfort during braces wire changes - which was quite different from the very painful wire changes I had experienced with the previous orthodontist. Not only that, but within days of being in my new braces I could already see improvement in the alignment of my teeth! I continued to see steady improvement from one visit to the next, and Dr. Walvoord always listened to any concerns I had and addressed them successfully. The course of treatment took a mere nine months, and my teeth look better than I had ever thought was possible! Scheduling appointments was easy, I was always seen on time, pricing was very reasonable, the offices were lovely and the staff friendly and extremely competent. My only regret is that I didn't come to see Dr. Walvoord in the first place and wasted two and a half years with the first orthodontist. I highly recommend Dr. Walvoord without reservation!

Thanks to Dr. Durfee's judicious use of expanders followed by braces for significantly less than my five years, she not only has a beautiful smile, but her bite should be strong, stable and serve her well for a lifetime. In an effort to gather clues for how to treat my daughter's similar physiology, Dr. Durfee X-Rayed me. I remember sitting in her office as she projected on the wall both my skull and my daughter's, complete with percent deviations from the norm for various facial structures. Her thoroughness as she developed a plan for my daughter blew me away. Best of all, her plan for my daughter did not require invasive procedures like extractions or breaking and reassembling her jaw as the primary courses of action as others had suggested. I come from a family of physicians. My parents believe you don't do surgery if you don't absolutely have to. Dr. Durfee proved that, in the case of my daughter, surgery was not required to get an outstanding result. It helped that Dr. Durfee isn't just an orthodontist--she's an orthodontist who teaches dental students how to be orthodontists as a professor at the University of Illinois Dental School. If you want great results, don't just go to an orthodontist. Go to the orthodontist who teaches how to practice orthodontics. That's Dr. Durfee. It should also be noted that my older daughter, who was lucky enough to inherit my wife's bone structure, is being treated by Dr. Durfee with Invisalign and is enjoying similarly excellent results. Whether or not the case appears complex, Dr. Durfee is the right physician for the job. I recommend her without reservation.
