My god-mother's friend suggested King Ahiram. The place is just a take-out place with an adjoining room with tables and chairs where you can have a "sit-down" meal. So we ended up ordering a selection of items. I don't know. I am used to going to Little Arabia for my middle eastern food here in southern California and my favorite place in Brisbane is Nono's and omg.... the food here was kinda on the dismal side. I felt really bad that my parents and god-parents had to sit through a different cuisine which I've been touting as so fabulously delicious only to be faced with really sub-par Mediterranean food. We had falafels, hummus, babaghanoush, kebabs, these crescent pastry things which looked like empanadas -- everything was mediocre at best. The meat was dry, the dips needed more olive oil.... falafels were hard as rocks. Tabouleh was flavorless. I never heard the end of it after the meal, even from my son who is an avid fan of this cuisine. We are definitely going back to Nono's next time.

It's only when you really take notice that you see King Ahiram's name on there. So yeah, until I paid closer attention when I decided to review it, this place was always known to me and everyone I know as 'the Lebanese place'. I guess the point I'm making is that at a place like this the name is unimportant. The food is tasty, cheap, and a bit on the greasy side so it ticks all the boxes for hungry youths. I wouldn't go here expecting a gourmet meal, but for the prices and the convenience it's worth munching on a felafel kebab or cabbage roll. 'The Lebanese place' might not be fit for a King despite its namesake, but it's definitely fit for a starving student.

Despite an earlier conventionally timed dinner, you've been struck by what might be called 'drunken munchies'. What do you do? WHAT DO YOU DO? You go to the greasy kebab joint with the ridiculous name, not because you really WANT to but because you HAVE to. It's quite simply the only place open after a certain hour. Join the queue full of like-minded fools and try not to get into an altercation with the more aggressive punters who might accuse you of stealing their spot in the line. Once you get to the front of the queue your fortunes will improve, sort of. Now to choose from the dubious bounty before you. Basically the options are a dodgy kebab or a some of their stodgy pide pizza, which has a consistency akin to an old kitchen sponge and a taste that's only slightly better. It's $3.50 for a slice but it gets cheaper when you buy in multiples, but again, that's probably not a good thing. Maybe I'm being too harsh. They do an interesting Hawaiian kebab with pineapple on it. Kooky!

Especially one that will, in a matter of hours, serving a multitude of drunk, disorderly and retarded individuals, spilling like diarrhea fart out of the nearby bars. I get it. It's probably gets very stressful, annoying or repugnant even. However, if it's ten o'clock at night and I need a bite to eat, AND I haven't been drinking, please Mr Kebab man, be nice to me. All I wanted is a chicken kebab with no onions. Yes that right no onions, I'm not a fan. Sorry as well, no, I don't want any extras no matter how many times you push them. Please stop scowling at me, just take my money and put it in the register. Oh, now that you've put the roll in the toaster you're going to walk around the counter and out to the street to see what's happening. Nothings happening its ten o'clock. That's cool, take your time, I'll just wait here until you see fit to retrieve my meal. Oh, you're going back now? Good. Are you scowling at me again? Oh, that's hot, do you think I can have a couple of serviettes to hold this aluminum packaging its kind of burning my hands. Can you say something? Oh I get it, just follow your scowly scowl scowl over there. Thanks.

On walking into the place I got the sense it was still a work in progress, with some tradesmen on a ladder doing what look like some plumbing work. But it didn't get in the way of me making my order, which was one of their tasty sounding 'Shish tawouk kebab' -- chicken skewer, pickles, lettuce, tomato, onion & garlic mayo in Lebanese bread. I've never had a kebab with pickles on it before, and I have to say -- I'm converted! The tartness of the pickles and crunch of marinated mustard-seeds went well with the garlic mayo (a similar combination that you find in Western hamburgers). The chicken pieces were tender and expertly cooked. Their bread is good quality too -- chewy and strong enough to hold its contents; no fuss no muss. At $8 it's about the same as a yiros across the road (although you get a bigger portion for your money), and as the guy serving me pointed out, it's traditional Middle-Eastern cuisine, as opposed to the Greek take you get at Char Char. They have some really interesting looking items on the menu I'd like to try, such as their walnut labne, chicken fahita and charcoal-cooked whole chicken (served w/ garlic dip & Lebanese bread). They also have an outdoor courtyard (still having the final touches put on but operational nonetheless) where you can take your meal. You can even have a shisha (traditional Middle-Eastern water-pipe used to smoke flavoured tobacco) if you're so inclined.

But I'll have you know that this is the one I choose to go to over all the other ones, and that makes it super special. I go there for the playground. It's not only a McDonald's play area, it's under shade. Now for all you mums out there looking for a place to dump your 2-5 year old kiddies, this is the place. I know it doesn't sound like that big a deal, but it is! Do you know how many mums out there wish there was a place like McDonalds with a play area under shade? While they can talk, eat, be merry. There are millions. And that, my friend, is why this McDonalds is super special. You can lock those smelly little suckers up and they can't go anywhere while you have a chat with your friend, lover, some stranger... it's fantastic. You can finally grab those really precious few minutes if not more (there is rubber matting, it will reduce the time the child falls to when you actually have to get up and see to that they are okay because the rubber matting, sponges their fall mmm hmmm you see?)... and for free. FREE. Cheap food, no entry fee and free enclosed play area... these words are like music to a tired, restless, about to lose it mothers' ears. It sounds very hard to believe I know... shouldn't all play areas for McDonalds be under cover? The answer is NO people.... the answer is no. This one even has a McCafe and is now a 24 hour establishment... even better! I have driven around Centenary looking, the Hungry Jacks has a playground so under the sun the paint has started stripping and the metal has started looking very grimy. The KFC doesn't have one, the other ones are in a shopping centre... just trust me on this one. Take a breather, I never thought I'd say this, but go check this quinkydink out.
