Came here for lunch after checking out the Castle De Haar. We took a bus and then a train to get to Utrecht. This was the most traditional Netherlands cuisine we had on this trip. Large portions so you can certainly share plates. The meatball was large and like a big patty, served with a grilled onion and bread that was not my favorite. Most other items were fried with thicker outer breading and then was served with more slices of bread. During lunch, they had a good selection of brunch items too like pistachio strawberry french toast and lox toast. Interior is cute and centrally located. We got to sit in a separate room inside the restaurant. There are only 6 tables for groups of 2-4 here. Because this space is sectioned off, none of the noise from the main dining traveled here, making this area super romantic and cozy. I recommend sitting here if you can! I ordered the Gehaktbal with a side of fries. The waitress said that if we get a meatball dish anywhere, it should be from this establishment. Did it live up to her claims? Not really. While I loved the sauce, the meatball was a bit too soft (I am impressed though by how the chef was able to cook this in a pan without it breaking apart). It felt like I was eating meat sauce rather than a meatball. Texture wise, it left a lot to be desired. The boyfriend got Melanzane (it's basically like a lasagna, but with eggplant layers instead of pasta layers). To me, it tasted super bland, and the lack of texture made me think this dish was made for people without teeth. Like it was just such a soggy mess. It came with a side of salad. The salad was fresh, but I left most of it untouched as I found the dressing barely palatable. Save yourself the €17,50 and order something else. Lastly, we tried the tropical smoothie. A bit overpriced, but it tasted very fresh. read more

Graaf Floris came highly recommended so I went to check it out for myself. They have beautiful inside seating but on a nice day, you want to sit outside by the canal to enjoy the view and people watch. I got Dutch Beef Stew (prepared with Debbel beer, ginger bread and apple syrup) for €19.70. It was served with fries and a salad. I also got warm appelbol for €4.80 as dessert. To be honest, service was slow and the place was crowded... service was slow because the place was crowded so adjust your expectations. That said, the stew was really good and I would recommend it to anyone going. Given that it came with a salad and fries (which I wasn't expecting), I would say the price was fair. I would go again for the vibes and the stew. read more

The food was excellent, the service was great and the ambience was perfect. It's not loud, you can eat and have a conversation. The food is delicious, my favorite place was on vacation. Perfect cozy place and quite romantic. read more

I had the beef steak for a late lunch but I'm sure it was yesterday's re-heated leftovers. I ordered it medium but it was well done. It tasted like week-old meatloaf. Probably microwaved. And still took half an hour to get to my table. Absolutely unacceptable. I could have cooked this at home way better. One stars for the waiters who were fine but who should have advised me to order something else. read more

Dutch style restaurant and cafe within walking distance from the central railway station. Walked in with family group to have a late lunch and although we had to wait a little, they had enough seating for groups as well as individuals. The furniture seemed a bit rustic which added positively to the ambience. Service was quick and professional, and we even got some cocoa bean shaped chocolate for our wait. They have a lot of vegetarian options, if you eat eggs and milk products, that is. I went with a typical Dutch fried egg sandwich. It was quite amazing. Others had various soups (all quite good) and sandwiches. In the end, we shared a carrot cake and the typically Dutch apple thing that was crunchy on the outside but mellow inside. It seemed to be quite popular with the locals as we could see a lot of people enjoying their high teas or just the evening coffee with a newspaper. A bit on the pricier side but definitely well worth it. read more

Loved the mussels and beef stew. Especially the mussels was cooked in very plain method but it was very fresh, very tasty indeed. I normally do not eat much seafood but this time I was totally attracted. The beef stew was cool too. I had my first experience of 'beer tasting' here since I asked the waitress to recommend some local beer and she brought me 4 different types to taste. We really enjoyed the bitterballen but the coffee was bitter too. I don't know what brand they use, but it was not to my taste. I order cappuccinos everywhere, and had just had one at the Speelklok museum before I went here, so I know I could compare them easily. I prefer Illy coffee (and was reminded of that when I visited Starbucks in Rotterdam- their coffee taste burned to me too). The servers do not know English or pretend not to know English- so it's on the difficult side to make yourself understood- but the seating area is lovely, especially the padded seats right next to the canal. read more

The staff here is quite distant and very stand off-ish. Really the only reason I come here is to meet up with one of my friends every once in a while for an Appelbol (puff pastry baked apple) and also sitting outside is nice when you can sit on the benches right outside the door and watch the world go by. But really, the staff and especially the manager make me stay away from this place on other occasions, so, if you want a good baked apple: I think they order them from the bakery right up the street next to the other coffee place. So my advice, order the baked apple and go home or to your hotel room and enjoy with good company and a nice hot beverage! read more

My girlfriend and I are Americans on vacations. This was one of the best meals we had in Europe. The double beer was nice and the goblet was friggin' medieval. The bread with herb butter was irresistible. We must have been hungry. I ordered the local specialty, beer stew with gingerbread. What the hell was I thinking? Imagine making beef stew at home and adding finely crushed gingerbread cookies. There, that's it. However, My girlfriend ordered the sea bream. TO-DIE-FOR. I think the sauce was either beurre blanc or hollandaise. I almost arm wrestled her for it. W.O.W. Really good. The atmosphere is totally old fashioned with old wood, like we Americans really dig. Graaf means Count, so I guess the Count lives there counting up our tourist dollars, just like on Sesame Street. We had our coffee on the seats on the bridge over the canal. Beautiful. This place is perfect. One of the nicest meals on our ten day trip through Netherlands and France. read more
