First day in Paris and what did I do with the family? Get Chinese food for our first meal before…read morethe Power Nap to get over the long flight! This place did not disappoint on a street with many Asian dining options near the home we rented. The others looked pretty worthwhile as well but this place was already packed by noon and by many Asian diners. It's smallll . Tight seating but still probably holds 30-35 diners in tight quarters. This could not meet fire code at home but the French style fire extinguisher right next to our table . A few servers including an older lady that appeared to be the operator. Very kind service really and easy enough to navigate with limited English. There is some lost in translation issue that created one slight fail in my ordering decision For five we ordered a beef and onion(oignion) dish, green beans (haricot vert), kung pao chicken, and what I was expecting to be a version of twice cooked pork Rice was requested and each diner was given white rice in individual bowls and chopsticks. Other utensils and plates appeared to be available upon request but we just ate family style over our bowls of rice. The green beans were petite but fantastique! Served with fine diced and sautéed onion peppers and garlic that outshined the perfectly cooked beans. The beef dish was great however if not with family I would have ordered it spicy! Served in a shovel head(new and meant for this use with a Teflon coating) it was very popular with us. The chicken was great and onions cooked al dente with lots of peppers. A bit spicy but the family could eat it. The pork was good but different to what I expected. We purposely ordered it not spicy with less jalapeños than the picture on the menu. Great vegetables including tomato?? The meat however was not pork belly braised and then stir fried but was cured bacon. It was still good to try but not what I hoped. The bacon was of great quality though. This place had a line forming after we got the last large table. I would definitely eat here again! So much fantastic hot pot dishes, vermicelli soups etc that would be great to try and some really big family sized portions of these dishes. I'd love to eat my way through their menu!

Had it not been for a local friend from China dragging me here, it would have been easy to dismiss…read moreLe Celeste Gourmand as a faux-Chinese restaurant in a trendy district meant for non-Chinese tastebuds, let alone Parisian ones. My friend, a Parisian in his own right of nearly a decade, hails from the Hunan province in China where topics of Mao Zedong, tall mountains, and supposedly the spiciest regional cuisine in the country exist. His claims of Le Celeste Gourmand's ability to replicate the Hunan spice was questionable in my mind, but I soon learned to his palate was a far better judge than I. And just like all things life - one should never judge a book by it's cover, as the place was packed with virtually all Chinese clientele. Some might be tourists, but I gathered a majority of them were Chinese locals living in Paris, all with a hankering for something that reminded them of home and while enjoying regional flavor in a city not known for it's distinct choices in Chinese cuisine. The restaurant feels like a small cafe, with little space and simple decor. Just like all small restaurants in Europe, they manage to deceivingly fit large groups of people with creative uses of combining tables and maximizing round tables. My group of 18 was able to fit semi-comfortably in the space, which is never easy at any establishment. And in the end, my friend was right. The food was of high caliber and the spiciness from the culmination of it all had many of my dining companions panting after every bite. Hunan specialties of Kou Shui Ji (Mouthwatering Chicken), Mapo Tofu, Xian Chao La Zhu Mo (Fresh Spicy Ground Pork), Sauteed Bok Choy, and Qie Sha Zhu Ruo (Eggplant and Pork) were sensational, with plenty of spice to boot. Non-spiceheads beware, be sure to ask the wait staff for their recommendations. Though the final tally of the bill felt a bit pricey for Chinese food, I'm quickly reminded that there aren't too many restaurants like this in these parts and I'm in Paris after all. The Euro's ability to trump the US dollar and the Chinese RenMinBi was somewhat painfully felt when all was said and done. Each dish was hovering somewhere between 9-16 Euros, which for European standards, I imagine is reasonable. But the question begs, is this place worth trying again? Oui and Oui. Le Celeste Gourmand is further proof quality Asian food doesn't have be had in the Quarter Chinois, but more importantly represents a side of China that is often overlooked and under appreciated. I am willing to bet Mao himself would've given this place a thumbs up.

The food was great and out before us within 5 minutes if ordering it. I have forgotten the names of the dishes, but there was one of mushrooms, of tofu, of tripe, and of frog legs. The dish with mushrooms was delightful and brought out in a pot that was over a small fire (frog legs were brought out in the same manner). The tofu was tasty and soothingly smooth compared to the frog legs and tripe. The frog legs were a bit on the spicy and pretty tasty. The tripe, however, was made with painful spice. I could barely eat it although it was well cooked and seasoned. A warning about the spice: THE OTHER REVIEWS WEREN'T JOKING! The tripe was insanely spicy. In some respects it was almost as spicy as eating a raw thai pepper, or at least the spice of a raw jalapeño x 1.5. After the first bite I drank two glasses of water before cooling down. Overall, the meal was enjoyable, but one dish was a bit too spicy. I recommend as long as you have a good method of pay, especially if you're a tourist!

Crunchy petite delicious hot little deep fried "springrolls" ( so-called in American) that you wrap in a mint leaf and lettuce, then dip in a delightful rice vinegar and mildly spicy dipping sauce. You can get this manywhere in Paris, but nowhere is it as good as at Chez Ann. So crunchy! The spring roll itself is also a delicious appetizer. It's served cold and filled with shrimp, crispy fresh cool julienned vegetables in a translucent rice sheet. It's a difficult decision: nêms or spring roll. Have both! But don't - the portions of noodles are generous and filling. The home made broth, satisfying. Soup or wok, you can't go wrong. My personal favorites are piquant beef, and porc spare ribs, and chicken, and well ok. They are all good. Why must I choose?! Service is friendly, efficient. Given that we've been eating at Michelin-rated Chinese restaurants at the Peninsula hotel, the food at Yangtse was just as good and often tastier than similar plates that cost 10x the amount (seriously, we've spent $1000 on two meals for 2 adults and two small children). It took about an hour of internet research to discover this restaurant after discovering that Lili at the Peninsula was sold out tonight. At first I wanted haute cuisine but soon discovered that as far as Chinese food is concerned, the only exceptional restaurants, Lili(Peninsula) and Shang's Palace (Shangri-la) were sold out. I sacrificed on location but did not sacrifice on taste and satisfaction. The bill was a lot easier to digest too.

My favorites were the spicy noodle soup and the eggplant. The chicken noodle soup didn't have a lot of flavor and the beef had an interesting flavor that I had never tasted before and wasn't used to. The entire meal came out to a little over 40 euros which was reasonable considering how expensive eating out in Paris usually is. Granted I haven't tried each one, but the thought of paying at least 15 euros for food which has been sitting for however long, kills me. I saw this place the other day, and sprinted across the street to have a look at the menu. There were legitimately asian people inside, and no display cases full of already prepared dishes. I returned the next day for lunch (they seem to serve non-stop from open to close, but I could be wrong). We ordered the aubergines in a porc sauce (78) and the poulet pimente de ChongQing (44) as well as the chicken corn soup and assortment of steamed dim sums.... The aubergines were fantastic, a definite repeat, the ChongQing chicken was my wild card (not to my taste-- really fried bits of chopped chicken with pieces of bones... overly greasy for me), and the corn soup was missing the flavour... BUT, still the best chinese food I have had in Paris and I will absolutely return. The prices were great 7-12 euro per main, and you leave stuffed.
