This is a hidden gem. The lunch was delicious and very reasonably priced. I had the goulash soup to start which was seasoned just like home. The steak with sausage and bean topping was the real treat of the day. For dessert I had an espresso and a dish of sweet whipped cream and grated chestnut. I will definitely come back next time I am in Aberdeen. read more
We had seen the reviews and Goulash has a good reputation, so we were looking forward to going. We were disappointed, though. A dated interior, hardly any customers and extremely cold set the tone. The starter of salamis and cheese was quite poor. Mains were goulash, which was decent, and fried chicken with an incredible amount of cream on top. Maybe authentic, but the combination of atmosphere and food quality make a return extremely unlikely. read more

Best goulash I've ever had in a restaurant! The spätzle were fresh and the meat was extremely tender. Highly recommend!
Its hard, very hard to find a decent restaurant in Aberdeen. Perhaps partly due to the transient nature of the city. I've been visiting Abz on business for years now and have never really found a place that I would go back to time and time again. However, I may have finally found just my place, its taken me a few years but I think this little hidden gem off Union Street could be my go to place from now on. Also the prices were very reasonable for such an expensive city. The fist thing that will strike you about Goulash is the incredibly warm and relaxing environment. It feels like a proper European cafe / bistro (slightly Parisian even). They played wonderful orchestral pieces on the stereo, some by famous Hungarian composers like Liszt which really added to the ambiance, yes I said ambiance! The floor was run by the friendly owner who was helpful and attentive. The food was really authentic Hungarian / Eastern European style. The reason I stopped by in the first place was because I had never even seen a Hungarian restaurant in the UK before, so I was more than tempted to give it a shot. Anyway, I started with the mixed platter of cured meats which was accompanied with a big basket of fresh bread. Cracking way to start a meal! Main course was an absolutely delightful gypsy pork steak. The flavors were just incredible as it was served with smoked bacon fat, amazing! I really cannot wait to go back and try more of the food. read more
I was visiting my friend in Aberdeen and before I got the train home, we decided to have some Hungarian food in Goulash. If ever you wanted to feel like you'd taken a trip away, then this is the place. Enter Goulash, and you enter into a cosy, traditional Hungarian cavern, with fitting music and interior. I'm always so excited to try a new cuisine and I was particularly excited because Goulash is a firm favourite for my friend. So, I had high hopes. There seemed to be a problem with the waitress when we arrived, as we had quite a wait time before she came over to take drinks orders. Another member of staff came over to say she was on the phone and wouldn't be long. I found it a a little strange that another member of staff couldn't take our drinks order, and we waited around ten minutes. When the waitress did appear, she was very apologetic. We then had a significant wait time for food. I had the last train home to catch and we'd arrived at Goulash with what we'd presumed was enough time. - It really should have been. But we waited and waited. It got to the stage where, by the time the food would have arrived, we knew we'd have to rush it down and then run as fast as we could to the station and perhaps not even make the train. So we asked for it to go. Not long after it appeared in boxes. I ordered the chicken topped with potato and cheese based on the waitress' recommendation. - I couldn't decide between two dishes so I asked her what she preferred. I think I made the wrong decision. The breaded chicken wasn't of the highest quality and the potatoes were much, much too salty. It was all topped off with a literal mound of cheese. - The result was super greasy; the sort of thing you'd find in a late night takeaway at 3am. I expected some real comfort food, and sadly this just wasn't it. I was so very hungry, so I ate it. I felt a little bit sick afterwards, what with the potato/cheese overload. And a little bit sad, because Goulash just wasn't all that. read more

Goulash is well worth a visit. The owner is a real character and extremely accommodating if you call last minute. We arrived with no expectations at all and i have to say it was one of the most fun restaurants I have ever been to. The atmosphere of the place is above 5 stars and the food is excellent value. read more
I think this is the only Hungarian restaurant in Aberdeen so luckily it's good. Open for dinner only after 7pm. The couple that own and run it are terrific. The old man is happy to tell a story. Only seats about 20 people so be sure to make a reservation. read more

Good food, hearty on a cold night. Pleasant staff. Be ready to pay cash. Their machine has disconnection problems.

Goulash is completely different to any other restaurant you will visit in Aberdeen! When you enter it feels like you have entered someones living room with some tables! It is a very small restaurant and you can see through to the kitchen which adds to its homely atmosphere. The restaurant is bring your own booze which is nice as you can bring a nice bottle of wine, there is a corkage charge though. The owner will be there and takes the orders and welcomes you and this is lovely, like I said you really feel welcomed. The menu is Hungarian adn the food is presented in a very rustic style but all the food was very tasty and the value is absolutely excellent. Location is great, just off Union Street on a small lane which feels nice. Make sure to book though as it is small, popular and sometimes closes if they don't have bookings. I understand that it is the only Hungarian restaurant in Aberdeen so it is definitely worth a visit. read more

I used to see the sign for the restaurant everyday while walking down union street. Then I read the earlier reviews and decided to go there. The problem with reading reviews before going to a restaurant is that the expectations are set (good or bad). The place is a cozy nook, the decor done in green and red and I suppose very Hungarian. The hostess was super friendly and the seat next to the fire place completed the ambiance. I had the chicken mince wrapped in a pancake topped with sauce. It was superb. The hostess told me not to order the goulash because it had the same sauce but to try the Gypsy steak. This was a mistake. The steak was tiny and too salty and the plate was loaded with french fries. I barely touched the fries and the hostess was concerned that I didn't like the food. Which was nice of her. She seemed to be genuinely interested in knowing if the customers enjoyed the food or not. The Hungarian wine was pretty good too. Of course thanks to the reviews I mades sure I had cash on me because indeed my credit card didn't work. The hostess says she has this trouble with corporate cards. (Well they need to fix it!) I would be washing dishes if I didn't have cash. But I do recommend a visit. read more
