Wandered in here for the first time a few days ago, with a friend who was visiting from Ireland. The store is pretty cute and has some really nice pieces for reasonable prices. My friend found some good stuff that didn't break the bank (damn that exchange rate!). The woman (owner?) was kind of stand-offish, and acted a bit suspicious the whole time we were in there. Like, coming over to straighten racks right next to us and watching us out of the corner of her eye, offering repeatedly to take the couple of skirts my friend was holding as she sorted through outfits. And while my friend was trying stuff on the woman kept watching everywhere I went as though I was about to grab an armful of crap and run for the door. She even approached my friend's dressing room and talked to her through the door, which wasn't appreciated. Paranoid. However, she did answer my questions about how often she buys in more clothes (daily, in case you're interested) and she mentioned something about being able to trade if we have suitable clothes we want to bring in for her to look at. I'll definitely go back to paw through the racks again and see what else I can find, but it wouldn't be the customer service that does it for me in that place. read more

Catchy front window displays in the hub of the tourist district.. bringing hipster and eclectic surfer fare from across the country to this little taste of Bohemia. The items in here are very cute and quality... though it will cost you. Dig around for some fabulous threads of yesteryear. Tons of hats, scarves and some very cute shoes. I wish I had spent some more time in here... but then again maybe it's a good thing I didn't... because with some of the stuff in there I would have been all too tempted to spend the extra few bucks. read more

I have been driving by this store since I moved to the area a few months ago and keep wanting to stop in and go shopping. I finally made it in today and loved it! The clothing and accessories were so eccentric and different and the woman working was really helpful and attentive (and she was playing really good music!). The prices were a bit extreme for most of the stuff, but you can definitely find some good stuff also. My favorite part of the store were the bins that you could rummage through--I found lots of fun goodies in the bins! I'll definitely go back to find more fun and eccentric items! read more

Rudest employees have zero interest in their customers. Merchandise was at very best mediocre but the few good things there I would not buy from them at woefully low asking prices due to their blatant lack of respect or interest in my presence. I literally would only refer this business to someone who I felt deserved to get a slap of humiliation. Nobody "gotta have it"!! I looked clean and stylish and asked a few questions which only seemed to annoy these socially challenged femmes. I've been to Gotta Have It a few times and always seem to find a great deal. I just found an awesome 70's style disco dress that looks brand new, for $25! And among all the vintage clothes and accessories, there's always some newer stuff as well. The owner of the store was really helpful and sweet. Even though it was a bit busy in there, she found a beautiful Ted Baker dress for me that fit perfectly. That alone makes me want to come back, even when I'm not looking for vintage. The rudest customer experience I've ever had. Totally overpriced clothing and little accessories. Some of them are cool but I have never been treated so poorly, it was super strange. Maybe it's that they deal with a bunch of tourists but they were really unwilling to help at all and scoffed at me as I left the store after buying some pants. Today I casually walked in this place because of a lunch date with a friend. In the way to the restaurant I saw this vintage store. Since I'm a showroom owner I decided to eat then take my friend there to do some possible buying. First.... No greeting whatsoever. Second all these clothes are over priced thrift store finds literally.I looked through the whole store only to find this beautiful sequenced rose top. So BEAUTIFUL. Upon looking and examining the garment it was torn on both shoulder tops and dirty. I was surprised that a shop in Venice would treat their inventory so poorly. Like is there no in house sewer to mend the clothing as they come in? No one has a sewing machine????I will never return to this high priced thrift store. read more

I've been coming to Gotta Have It for over 3 years every time I'm in LA and their selection never disappoints. Besides being a really cool store to walk into, the owners are so nice and probably have to deal with negative people all day (hence some of these bad reviews that do not seem true at all, they probably just don't want to buy your clothes). Don't second guess coming into this shop because it is such a great experience and would be hard to leave without purchasing something super unique since they've been in this business for so long! read more

They don't wash their cloths and you can tell. The moment you open the door the reek hits you in the face. BO stank mixing with hipster pretension oozes from every corner. I saw the two owners of the store busily staring at their phones not helping customers. A friend tried to ask one of them a question about an over priced pos, but the chick half hardheartedly drew her eyes from the glow of the screen to mumble out an answer. High priced, stinky crap from a sub-par Buffalo Exchange wana be. The girl who was their assistant was nice and helpful though. I feel sorry for her having to work with those two self-absorbed wastes of space. In fact the whole shop is a waste of space. Apparently, they even peddle this crap online. A package from them and the uni-bomber would be two of the most unpleasant postal experiences to ever receive. They deserve ZERO STARS. read more

I consigned at this store for many years and bought many things there when the previous owner Denise was in charge. When she sold it to two mouthy ladies,, who could not have been more rude. They did not return my clothes telling they were too busy to look for them and frankly did not want to be bothered with customers belongings. They have a bad attitude that makes their store unappealing. There are so many better vintage stores in the area, with a pleasant environment that I suggest don't waste your time here. read more

Very eclectic store to browse through during your day at venice beach. Something for every style. Prices are a little on the high side but I find something I just have to have every time I'm there (hence gotta have it I suppose!) Its also great to bring a bag of your own vintage and trade or sell! If you only have a little $ to drop, they have wonderful accessories. read more

I walked into Gotta Have It on my first adventure to L.A. and flew home with a proud suitcase. The owner was extremely inviting, full of knowledge and beamed with pride about her store and the garments that filled the space. Moving to L.A. in the fall--in the land of endless shopping and over priced trends--Gotta Have It Vintage is the one place i continually gravitate towards when it comes to spending money on clothing. Not to say that the place is pricey, i always seem to find amazing pieces for under 60 dollars. its a store that i ENJOY spending money at. it is one of the few vintage shops i have EVER been to that ISNT full of shit or over priced shit. read more

Went to this store while in Cali visiting from NYC after hearing about it from a few friends who swear by it. Found the most amazing ring and dress here! I get such a thrill when I come across that gorgeously rare vintage item, and I was lucky enough to find 2 here! There's also a small selection of new merchandise, cute tanks, sweatshirts, hats, etc. Will definitely recommend to friends visiting Venice Beach. And I found the owner quite helpful and nice, she actually showed me the ring I bought as she hadn't put it in the case yet. Will definitely come back! read more

been here a couple of times, and yea you do have to dig the first time i came the woman could have been nicer, but the second time i brought my best friend who was visiting from boston and the woman stayed late for us, didn't kick us out, asked us about boston/school and was pretty chill i don't like the derssing rooms, i like a bit more privacy but it was just us in the store so whatever i do like the clothes,found the hottest blue cult jeans (which i don't think exist anymore, sadly..) for like 30 bucks, great condition would have paid 130 for those new(back int he day when i knew where to find them) and a cute tank top to go with..and my friend got a really cute tank for like 8 bucks i think, it wasn't bad, probably cost like 15 in stores, not a name brand read more

This place isn't that bad. It's a definite two star place. The lady who works here is rude/paranoid, but she didn't affect me all that much. I found a vest here, liked it, and bought it for 12 bucks. That's a bargain. Not everything is that cheap: there were hats upwards of fifty dollars, jackets upwards of two hundred, and shirts for thirty. It's not your average goodwill, but it does have a thrift shop feel. I might come back here, but most likely not because there are definitely other places to thrift shop that have more original (and cheaper!) merchandise. read more

Finally a Vintage Store that's the real deal! In Los Angeles, where everything comes and goes quicker than some of the horrific trends we see daily, it is a relief to find a Boutique, in the heart of awesome Venice no less, that has been around for over 20 years I've heard! A true testament to the amazement that lies beyond their fashion forward doors!! Gotta Have It is run by a Rad British Bird, and it is so awesome to not have to cross the pond to experience the unique hipness, edge and fun that is so of the moment in London! I love coming here because I always find something amazing! I have found my favorite Italian sandals, worthy of Capri in the 60's, and my favorite Prada leather purse here (In remarkable condition! Practically brand new!! Amazing Price!!), amid countless other things; notably an awesome party frock, scarves galore, fantastic jewels and vintage linens! When I can find shoes and a purse, vintage and in amazing shape, I think: what else is a girl to desire!!! I don't know what the other reviews meant when they spoke of the owner, she's an Artist who has created an eclectic collection of incredible finds from all over that make the shopping experience feel like finding treasures at every turn! Her eye is on point and the energy, being in Venice and all, is SOOOOO Fun! She even recommended incredible Vintage shops for me to check out when I made my way to London! She KNOWS her vintage! Meh... There's a decent selection of t-shirts, if you're into that. Plenty of floor-length mumus, ponchos, and other apparel suitable for nuns drape limply from the sales racks. Sometimes, however, you can find a classic. But even then, your newly purchased gem will most likely require some hemming or stitching. Overall, it's a fun place to look around, though. Also, if you're into scarves, they've got a whole bucketfull. read more

I was eating at Mao kitchen in Venice when after i strolling outside to walk off the food, when i noticed a new shop next door Gotta Have It. I walked in hearing some funky music, I was greeted by some pretty women and they had some really DOPE clothes with great prices. Oh yeah they even had some solid records for sale....some gems. Gotta Have It is a vintage consignment store, so if people don't understand that vibe, they are not going to understand. It is also located in an old building in Venice, and all of the old buildings in Venice have a musty smell because of the climate. The shop owners burn incense in an attempt to mellow it out, but if you're very sensitive to the inherent smell of a place, just keep in mind. If you persevere, which you definitely should if you're into vintage and love the thrill of finding something awesome, then you've hit a potential treasure trove. As with any place like this, there is something for nearly everyone: some basics; lots and lots of interesting retro- and band t-shirts; swimsuits; plenty of good vintage denim. If you're cold at the beach, stop in here for a jacket or sweater. There is always a selection of leather jackets; once I saw a young man from Germany search for and find the perfect leather jacket for his cross-continental globetrotting trip. On that note, the peoplewatching here is often good. Some genuine local characters roll through, along with plenty of interesting individuals who are just passing through. The staff are very adept at keeping aggressive people and panhandlers out, so no one will bother you. As mentioned, the clothing- and accessories selection is eclectic, but it tends more towards a '70s SoCal/Southwestern groove (perhaps obviously, given the location). '80s and early-'90s stuff is of course in high demand right now, and they have that too. Need a t-shirt with a puffy-paint wolf on the front, but want it to come with a little more history than the new stuff people sell on the boardwalk? GHI has got you there. I personally like wearing offbeat pieces, and have found good stuff like "a velveteen jumpsuit", "an acid-washed oversized denim jacket", and "a sheer full-length floral rayon witch-dress" here. If weird is not what you normally wear, GHI can also function as a costume shop, and has you covered for your Alice in Wonderland/Edwardian masquerade/pirates' ball -themed party needs. They have an extensive selection of high-end vintage turquoise jewelry. They often have vintage formal gowns, if you're going for that look. And if you're still worried about it, the building smell does not linger on the clothes once you bring them home. Give it a shot. read more

there are a lot of other reviews with personal criticism so i'll just give you my experience at this store: i was at cafe collage next door getting an iced tea and saw the open sign in gotta have it so i went to my car and added more money to the meter, returned to the store and found the door locked with no one inside. i looked up their yelp page and didn't see any business hours so i called the number; no answer. my boyfriend works at venice cruisers around the corner so i went and chatted with him for a minute, used the bathroom, came back at 11am thinking that's when they would be open; still locked. but i had put an hour on the meter and didn't want to deal with parking somewhere else in venice on a sunday so i finally googled the store's website and see that they claim to open at 11am everyday. as i'm looking at their site a woman rolls up on her bicycle, gets off, and starts to unlock the door. i approach her quickly before she disappears inside and she looks at me sidelong with a kind of nervous panic in her eyes and i realize she's not prepared to deal with customers rushing in the door yet so i politely ask her what time they open and she relaxes and replies "in a few minutes." she goes on to tell me she has to get set up inside and i tell her that's fine i'll wait, i'm not in a rush, i just didn't know if they opened later on sunday and i was confused by the open sign and locked door. she informs me the owner does that "to fuck with people." i'm not offended by this, although i am surprised at her candor. i laugh and tell her it worked, then wait till i can go in and look around. she opens the door at about 11:15, bringing a bundle of burning sage with her to put out on the sidewalk, (i like the smell of burning sage, but i also recall a hippy telling me once that burning sage gets rid of bad energy, so now i'm wondering if i'm projecting negative energy despite my pleasant, mellow demeanor) and i walk in and look at their accessories and clothes, see some cool stuff but nothing i "gotta have" in the half hour i now have before my meter runs out and i have to move my car. in the end i left without buying anything, and that's the end of my story. read more

Gotta Have It? Don't get it when the sales person/owner, doesn't even allow to look at her overpriced clothing without following you around like a lap dog. I was looking through a rack and something fell so reached down to pick it up. As I was doing this she ran over and starting looking on the floor all spastic and said very rudely "I thought something fell." I told her "yes something did, and I picked it up and put it back." She gave me a sarcastic smile and followed me around with her bitchy attitude and rude remarks. Very negative environment. I came in with money to spend and walked out with a full pocket. Her loss. She should have a sign that says " look but don't touch." Never returning. Definitely not a good way to end such a great beach day in Venice. read more

Would give it negative stars if I could... I've only ever given positive reviews before but my experience today stuck with me and I need to share so hopefully others don't bother with this place. Passed by on my way to donate my clothes to Goodwill, shrank my closet by 80% thinking I could possibly make a few dollars towards my big out of state move- yet got a major attitude from the manager the second I walked in!! I was friendly and polite and got some crabby reaction before I even opened my mouth! I needed an appointment apparently- her arms flailing for all the work she had to do- like I was interrupting. Sorry not sorry! For trying to make us both money!!. Ummmm hi I just passed by NEVER MIND! I had a $500 Versace dress among other vintage items but her attitude turned me off. Pompous snobby too good for anyone. Sure you will get far in life with that, love! Thanks again- I took my business elsewhere and made bank. I attempted to shop here one day, as I passed by. It was close to Halloween and I was looking for very particular things for costumes for 25 people and thought I might be able to find some good stuff there. i walked in with a Starbucks cup and the owner pounced on me and asked me awkwardly to put my cup on the front counter. I was willing to do this, after all, i understand her concern for the goods in her shop, but I was turned off when she asked me to leave for 10 minutes and return when she had finished taking photos of a model. I also don't have a problem with photo shoots for advertising purposes (I assume that is what was going on), but you should close up shop in that case, instead of leaving your business door wide open. I felt like I was an intruder and didn't appreciate the manner in which she handled the situation. I shop regularly in thrift stores and I will not recommend her to my many friends who also shop a lot in thrift shops. It may seem unfair, but remember, you can never take back a first impression. I hope she reads this and can take better care of the customers she still has. read more
