This store was ridiculous when selling us a pair of pants for $250 that ripped down the front after one lousy use! They stated not their problem that the product was defective. The manager was very rude and not helpful at all. Telling me that she has no business having to return the pants or refund us. She acted like it was our fault wearing the pants a certain way made them rip which wasn't ever the case! I'll never shop there again. How in this day when you can easily shop anywhere can a store have such a lousy policy. And no customer service. Buyer be wear!! read more

Gothic Renaissance is one of my favorite unique boutiques in New York City, and I always make a point to visit whenever I'm in town. It might look a lil' scary on the outside (I personally love the gargoyles, though!), but I invite you to abandon your apprehensions, and step inside to find a fully stocked collection of some amazing costumes, gorgeous jewelry, one of a kind shoes, and more! Seriously, if you plan to visit, definitely carve out a bit of time to browse around - there's so much to look at! Granted, all these lovely things come with a hefty price tag, but you won't find some of this stuff anywhere else. Yes, Goths and cosplayers will be over the moon with the corsets, Tripp pants, and Victorian style blouses, coats, and bustle skirts, but they have a lot of other cool items as well, including some exquisitely made beaded flapper gowns. New Year's Eve is right around the corner, and I am definitely going back to get one of those to wear as we ring in the Roaring 2020s! :) The employees couldn't be more friendly or helpful, and we've always had awesome experiences when shopping here. Not sure why this place has so many good reviews. I have gone there almost every year for Halloween and TOLERATED the obnoxious, rampantly misogynistic floor staff so I could get my costume. Feels like they get worse every year. They are bizarrely judgmental and act like everyone in the store is lucky to be there. They have a superiority complex and treat you like you're a silly tourist. Mind you--im a native New Yorker so I know this attitude when I see it. Sent my friend here and she also had a horrible experience. She watched a girl get screamed at for trying to try a corset on that the staff thought wasn't her size lol. They are borderline abusive. Will yell at you over nothing. If you ask them a question they will straight up stare at you and ignore you like its a problem. It's smaller than you'd expect from the look of it on the outside, but the variety of clothing and products they have is impressive. I was able to find a specific pair of stockings, a shirt, and a bracelet that I'd been looking for, for years! Relatively the only legit gothic clothing store around in Manhattan anymore. And without a doubt, much nicer staff than at 'Search and Destroy'. It's a bit difficult to find as a lot of construction work tends to happen in the area and personally I think they could do a better job of advertising their location in the event of store-front detours. But if you're in the area and are interested in alternative clothing, definitely have a look. Great service, great products, not so great location. As you can imagine it does get quite crowded around October, so be prepared to deal with a lot of pushing through to get to the items you want! read more

I was in town for Richard Wagner's Ring Cycle operas. I wanted to wear something special because the Ring Cycle is so special. I found some ravens at this store (birds that are featured in the opera's plot). Even though I'm probably not their typical customer (I'm a 50 something married opera-loving DC attorney), the staff was great, giving me really helpful advice on how to attach them to my head for costume use. I kinda of just stumbled on this place a few days ago, and boy am I glad I did. Because you can never have enough goth wear right? If you're a right wing conservative, please do not read any further. This place isn't for you. The space is pretty spacious and you can find all sorts of goth gear here. Black platform rubber boots, catsuits, fur coats, steampunk gear, all kinds of hosiery, bondage items, lots and lots of tutus, vinyl bikinis, bustiers of all kinds, cosmetics, wigs, socks, gloves, underwear, bras, goth dresses, corsets, etc. I have to agree the place is pricey, but if that fur coat is really speaking to you and you can work it, then its worth every penny. They do have a SALE rack and I did manage to see some nice items on there. I imagine this place will get busier as All Hallow's Day is approaching. This is the most obnoxious, abusive customer service I've ever experienced. From the moment I walked in the people working retail were hostile and suspicious. Long story short, I was buying a halloween costume and one of the staff had set me up with a changing room (which is a generous term -- it's basically a curtain right in the middle of the store). This woman literally hovered over me, arms crossed while I picked out a couple things to try. I go in, try a few things on, didn't like them. I come out and grab another one and go back in to try it on -- big mistake! She spots me from across the store, runs across yelling at me "HEY! YOU DO NOT HELP YOURSELF. YOU TELL ME WHAT YOU WANT AND I WILL GET IT FOR YOU DO YOU UNDERSTAND!" Reading through some of the other reviews it's clear that this is a pattern and the management has done nothing about it. If you need a costume just go up to Abracadabra -- these guys have some decent stuff but there's no reason to support a business that treats its customers this way. read more

I was brought here by my BF and tried a few gothic blouses. He ended up buying me a beautiful velvet blouse and a necklace to match. The necklace costs more than the blouse but it's well worth it. I went here on the recommendation of a friend. I really really wanted to like this place, but ........... First off, they carry cheap quality clothes at exorbitant prices. I really thought most of the outfits were cheesy and outdated - how much fake leather and velvet does a person really need? Also, the ladies clothing was juniors sized. The place is a little disorganized - it looked cluttered. The fitting rooms were just curtains hanging from what looked like curved shower curtain rods. The other issue I had was that I really didn't feel comfortable in there. The employees seemed more interested in chatting among themselves than helping out the customers. I think they want to cater to the much younger clientele, too. I guess they didn't want my money. Overall, I thought the place was unsophisticated and juvenile. I wish I could give this place a higher review. The pieces they have are incredible, and they have a wider selection than Trash and Vaudeville. But there are quite a few issues: 1. Everything is horribly over-priced, even the "cheap" rings they have near the register. I bought one that was $14, when I've gotten similar or better-made pieces for less at stores like H&M. 2. Their sales section is full of clothes that no one actually wants. Some stuff has hung on that rack for months without being touched. 3. THE STAFF!!!!!!! Not only do they completely ignore customers, but they always have the most inappropriate conversations right in front of them: gossiping, sex talks, personal problems, etc. I've seen so many other negative reviews on the service that I'm actually wondering if the staff has even bothered to go online and check them. I used to shop here rather frequently in college when I ascribed to a more gothic asthetic in my clothes. This place has some beautiful items, especially if you are interested in some unique (translate gorgeous) hats or shoes. However, the staff is notoriously rude or unfriendly, and the prices are extremely high. You also had better be a size 0 if you want to shop here because everything is a small or at best a medium clothing wise. Another thing I hate is their unappologetic "no returns ever, for any reason" policy. I am not someone who constantly returns things, but if something goes wrong from a quality standpoint, or if you are buying a gift for someone it is nice to have that option. In my mind it shows that they don't stand by the quality of their items. Still an interesting place to check out. I like that they have now expanded the store, since that place used to be TINY, and having that extra room has realy given a boost to the variety in there. Do yourself a favor and don't go in there asking stupid questions like "do you guys worship the devil" or "do you really dress like this?" or "are you a costume shop?" as then you should prepare to garner the death stare from the employees (I have seen it happen, and with good cause, those kinds of questions are a bit ignorant and rude). read more

I go here every year around the time of my birthday to pick up a REAL STEEL BONED CORSET! They do carry corsets that are under $100 and most of it is $200+. Every time I go here, the owner of the store is always grateful to assistant me. Also, they are flexible with their payment plans like "layaways", so you have to put down up to 30% if your gonna buy a corset. Plus, they help you put on a corset. I'm going back this Saturday for them to lace me up even after I payed the full amount. They expanded their store which I'm really happy about because before it was a bit too crowded. Yes, some stuff is expensive but they do carry real European style Gothic wear. I can't stand some of the stuff from Hot Topic, which is nothing but China made. They are really helpful, and don't be afraid to ask if you want a certain item at a cheaper price. They carry all price ranges. read more

It's the kind of place that has merchandise in every nook and cranny, so if you truly go in with the intention of buying something, don't expect to just pop right in and out. UPDATE: Yesterday was my birthday. My husband gave me a package and inside it was a pretty red tissue wrapped gift from GR. It was the collar I saw in the shop last time I was there! The very one I wished for!It is a great piece and suits me perfectly.What is good about GR's collars/chokers, is that some of them can be worn just about anywhere.They have ones that look great with all black, and are versatile.So my final update for this review is: I had a great bday gift from GR. Went here yesterday during their Black Friday sales. Was surprised to find the floor area smaller than I expected; it's about boutique size. I saw about four employees present, helping the customers, managing the racks, and manning the till, but no evidence of preferential treatment or dismissal. The area is compartmentalized into several sections, with shoes in their own area, a little curtained-off divide for blacklight/rave gear, an expansive section for corsets and men's clothing. It was clear that the corsets were their main event, not because they were displayed prominently, but because they took up the most area. Two or three walls were dedicated to what had to be hundreds of corsets in every colour of the rainbow, and an impressive quantity of patterns. They had a very small amount of mens clothing, each piece only available in one or two sizes. It could be a result of low inventory from the 25%-off sales. Most of the mens clothing was in the form of a large rack of pants. The more 'designer' styles were at the front of the store, culminating in an impressive $2000+ jacket that looked like a McQueen piece. Unfortunately, it seemed that the limited availability of sizes extended to this area as well. Due to the designer labels, the sizings tended to be varied and inconsistent, so I had to grab every available item to find the best fit. Fortunately, because they were designer labels, a good portion of the 'large' sizes were perfect fits for my industry-designated 'XS' form. It's a good idea to try on the pieces regardless of the label-size for that reason. The limited quantity of sizes would be a consideration for my return there in the future, especially considering the shoes. All the items in the store were at the higher end of the price point ($50-300), even with the sale. I did see some costume-style steampunk goggles tucked into a corner, and having worked at a party store and a novelty store, I know they were priced a bit higher than they ought to have been. Several of the pairs of goggles were the kind they sell in the California Adventure portion of Disneyland, which may have affected the price point, although they weren't labeled with the Disney logo. They also carried the makeup-portion of the Manic Panic line (Hot Topic only carries the hair dyes, and I didn't see any of the dyes in the store, so to this effect, they're complementary to each other), which I appreciated, although I didn't buy any this trip. Their website, finally, was bare-bones in terms of any kind of stock or indication of what was currently available. If they incorporated something like WooCommerce, or paired their physical current inventory system and payments with another web service, they wouldn't have the same issue with inventory confusion as their search for a 'small' that their inventory said they had seemed to imply yesterday. I would have really appreciated it if the website had more information or more options for me, particularly if I could order items in the sizes that fit me right, or see the dimensions on new clothing pieces before having to make the 2 hour journey out to the store. The present website contributed to me knocking a star down because it was a part of the sizing frustrations. I'd love to re-evaluate with a higher star if some of these issues get ironed out. read more
