There are 4 Paul's Markets in Louisville, and I am fortunate to live very close to the Middletown location, which opened in 1996. Every summer the outdoor area is chock full of beautiful flowering plants, both annual and perennial varieties. The plants today were lush, healthy, and absolutely stunning. They were priced in line with the local nursery that we most frequent, which is a bit higher than the big box stores. However, as with most things, you get what you pay for. The grocery has a wonderful deli that includes a hot bar and a wide variety of prepared sandwiches, pastas dishes, salads, and deserts. The salad selection was extensive. I opted for a cobb salad that included chicken, bacon, egg, tomatoes, lettuce, blue cheese crumbles and dressing! It was a steal for only $6.99 and absolutely delicious. I chose the honey mustard dressing and it was a chef's kiss! Throughout the grocery area one will find a lot of specialty items such as several types of gluten-free breads, seasonal fruits, regional candies, and much, much more. Drive by on the right day, you'll also see the smoker blowing outside. My sandwich of choice is a club on a toasted croissant with Colby cheese and a cup of broccoli cheddar soup. Look at the pictures, this place doesn't miss! It's constantly full of usuals and the staff definitely knows their people. While they offer a wide range of certain products, others which I typically purchase from Indian grocers were not available. The products which were available were highly over priced comparable to other grocers. I asked for the price for one product in particular, and the staff member told me, "The price IS listed on the shelf". Well if it was, it was not clear to me, and I could have missed it, but the rude comment was not necessary. I left without purchasing anything. Our first course was a Red Hog pâté on house made brioche, second course field greens with many locally sourced ingredients, third course Fischer Farms pork product, and finally a cheese course with honeycomb that capped off a stellar dining experience. Service was excellent and attentive without being intrusive. Very friendly and personable, which was also refreshing. We were also appreciative that the wine reps and managers stopped by each table briefly to answer any questions and provide further info. Restaurant seating includes indoor and outdoor covered and uncovered spaces. Communal tables and individual seating at tables or counter height options, as well as bar seating overlooking the open kitchen concept. The chefs and staff appeared to be a well oiled machine and produce quite a demonstration while in the trenches. Noise level can be moderately high when restaurant is at capacity with happy diners. Location has free street parking at corner of Frank and Frankfort Avenue, as well as free parking in the lot located behind and to the side of the business. There is also the butcher shop attached to the restaurant, but it was closed during our visit. Fries were good but a little floppy and not super crispy but we still enjoyed. The charcuterie plate includes salami, prosciutto, and a liver pate with bacon (the last was not super popular with us).
