I was concerned the ads might be a bit and switch, but there was plenty of product available. I snared quite a few bargains. And I grilled one of the porterhouse steaks tonight and the quality of the beef was excellent. As for the rest of the store, inventory is limited. Some empty shelves, limited selection, and most items are roughly 50¢ to 1$ more than a chain store. The locals have to pay for the convenience. I found it frustrating that many items weren't clearly priced. Particularly in produce. Also, OTG has its own off street parking lot for convenience. Is this an every day shopper? No. But sale prices provide a great reason to shop.

You know that scene from The Simpsons where Grandpa Simpson walks into a brothel, sees his grandson Bart, turns around and walks back out of the door? I kind of wanted to do one of those numbers upon entering Olde Towne Grocery. But I persisted, because I do love checking out local grocery stores when I'm visiting a new area. This one looked like it could have been so much better, but instead it was sad. Empty grocery shelves just give off a depressing feeling, you know? That said, the items that were on the shelves were arranged neatly, so there's that. There was very little produce, and what was there was just the hardy stuff that lasts a long time, like potatoes and onions. The meat counter did not look like it was in commission anymore. I guess a sparse grocery store in a neighborhood is better than no grocery store, right?

There did I meticulously gather my provisions - the fairest fruits, the freshest organic bounty - scrutinizing every label like ancient scrolls for hidden treachery. At long last, I reached the very gates of exit, only to find them deserted! No soul stood ready to tally my hard-won spoils. By the ancient gods, they would have me submit my sacred bounty to the cold, unfeeling jaws of the self-checkout?! Nay! They can feast upon the hindquarters of a stubborn ass! Aye, this night, I returned to my keep and did unleash a missive of great fury, a testament to their utter disregard for the human touch within their walls. No squire nor maiden could I find to aid my cause, to open a path to freedom. Thus, I took quill in hand and, in the tongue of kings of old, I forged words of such power and novelty that they shall echo through the corporate halls! I, a wordsmith of gladiatorial might, have pierced their invisible corporate armor! I have struck a mighty blow against the very spectral essence of their miserly existence! They shall not prevail! Translation from the above: I visited Kroger and spent a little over an hour meticulously selecting groceries. I focused on choosing healthy options that adhered to a specific diet prescribed by my doctor, particularly important as I had recently been discharged from the hospital. Upon reaching the checkout area with a full cart, I was dismayed to find no cashiers available. The self-checkout option was impractical for several reasons. The limited space in the bagging area makes it impossible to unload a full cart without using multiple carts, which often triggers the anti-theft system. This necessitates frequent assistance from an attendant, defeating the purpose of a 'self' checkout and creating an overall frustrating experience. Because of not finding help to check me out and feeling too weak and tired to bag my groceries my self. Due to this unacceptable situation, and my physical limitations after my hospital stay, I was forced to abandon my fully-loaded cart at the front of the store without being able to explain my reasons to anyone. My primary complaint is the lack of available cashiers. I am deeply disappointed that customer service has deteriorated to this point. This used to be my preferred store. It is close to my home. This experience was, frankly, pathetic. Kroger's staffing was unacceptable, and I am seriously reconsidering whether I will shop there again, despite its convenient location. I believe in maintaining a certain level of self-respect, and this experience was simply ridiculous. Thank you for nothing, Kroger; you were once my favorite store.
