Based on my recent experience with this shop, many of these reviews genuinely surprise me. I had a list of what I wanted and had done some online shopping as I don't have a full service fly shop where I live. The Gorge Fly Shop had every item (it was a long list) I was looking for. I had a couple of questions, which I sent early morning via email. I received a friendly, and thorough reply very quickly. I placed my order and they had a couple questions about how I wanted a couple things, and planned to set them up. Again, super friendly. Thanked me for my order and made it obvious they wanted to provide a high level of customer service. They carry a great selection of quality brands. Can you find things like flies, some of them called the same thing, for less elsewhere? Sure you can. Take a look at the makers of the flies they carry though. Theirs are quality, and you will get what you pay for. I've never understood folks that go cheap and low quality on flies. Compared to the gas, time invested, other gear, traveling, etc., they are a small expense and a horrible place to skimp, in my opinion. Shops like this, in any industry, are becoming more and more rare. Fly fishing is a passion, and I like knowing I can call those I do business with and ask questions and get accurate answers and advice. You don't get that at most big box stores or online discounters. I'm sorry that others have had experiences they found less than satisfactory. I have never been in store where I was repeatedly insulted and contradicted. I have been fly fishing since is was 13 and this guy basically told me that everything is know was wrong, don't tell all I have caught they would be shocked. Just because they are the only game in town does not mean they are the only game. I will buy nothing from them ever. read more

I am in NC and looked online to buy a Sage rod and reel. Gorge Fly Shop had the best prices and I ordered online. I made a mistake on the order and called the next day. They corrected the order with no hassle and I received it across the country in 3 days! Their customer service was pleasant, efficient, and courteous. Number 2 on my "Top 5 WORST Fly Shops" I wish I had looked on Yelp* before going to this "shop" as there are similar reviews to this one, my mistake. To begin with, owner, Travis Duddles, interrupted a conversation I was having at the register with the young man selling me a license. Mr. Duddles sat in a chair 15 feet from us acting like a king in his castle. He did not introduce himself--however, he did feel comfortable in insulting me. "All you guys come out here from the Rockies wanting the same thing." Then he proceeded to try, as best I can tell, to bait me into hiring a guide for steelhead. Saying, "No thirty-inch brown trout can compare to a steelhead." While this comparison may be true, I wanted a license and a little info not a comparison of the size of fish. If his "baiting" was an attempt to get me to spend money--it failed miserably. I did say "I was comfortable with my manhood, so size or quantity didn't matter," Mr. Duddles probably did not hear the insult for all his chest thumping. Mr. Duddles did not introduce himself, I had to ask who the owner was. He, of course, proudly stated he was. Then I left the shop. I began fly fishing at age 7 in Southwest Colorado. I have guided in Southern Colorado and North Central New Mexico. Now at age 50, I know what I like. I do not require a guide. Someday, I may hire a guide for steelhead--NEVER through your "shop"! I'm from Portland, but I think this will be my go to shop when it comes to buy high end stuff, the owner is really friendly and seems to understand that not all people who fly fish have a ton of money. He talked with me for a long time even though it was probably obvious that I couldn't buy anything substantial at the time. read more

After going to the shop I have read the varied reviews. I had a positive experience. I was immediately greeted with a hello and a smile. I was only in the immediate area for a few hours so using a guide wasn't an option this trip. I also let the staff member know that I am an artificial lure fisherman. While they didn't have anything for me to buy, the staff member spent about 20 minutes with me, providing suggestions where to fish. I appreciated his time. read more

I will agree with the previous review, in that when I visited the store last summer (2011) and spent a bit over $2,500 to buy a Winston fly rod, Ross reel, Simms waders & boots & Outcast float tube, plus Simms clothing, they were VERY helpful. What a difference a year makes! I went in today, and they could not have been less interested in me. I asked the silver-haired, old gentleman (not the owner Travis) about the new Simms felt-soled boots, and his reply was "yeah, i have them downstairs" and that was it--he never asked me if I wanted to try on a pair, and never offered to bring them up. I got the feeling that I was annoying him with my questions, and didn't bother asking about any other gear. What a disappointing experience! Apparently they don't need my money, and as such, they will get none of it. Time to find another fly shop. read more

I had flown into Seattle from the midwest to fish for steelhead for three days around Hood River with a friend. Within an hour on the first day my rod broke during a normal cast. I headed to the fly shop hoping they could provide me a rental to fish with for the weekend. Even though they had spare used rods on hand that they use for people interested in buying new rods, they would not loan me a rod for the weekend, even when I offered to pay an above market rental fee and/or secure it with my credit card. My opinion is that fly shops are part of the fly fishing community, and depend on anglers to be willing to support them rather than buy more cheaply from large big box suppliers or online. Nonetheless, this shop was not willing to loan me a rod to save my trip, which would have cost them nothing, and instead tried to force me to buy a rod so they could book a sale, which I did not do. read more

I live in San Jose, CA so I Ordered over the phone an Echo Carbon Fly Rod (7'6") with a reel to replace my old setup that was stolen by some scum bag. It had been 4 years since I'd touched a fly rod, so I needed some guidance in terms of accompanying items for the rod. The gentleman I spoke with on the phone was nice enough to spend about 30 minutes on the phone with me giving advice, checking his stock, etc. I felt bad for keeping him, but even though he sounded busy, he didn't once try to rush me off the phone. I ordered on on Friday and received my order by Tuesday. Can't complain there. Before this, Cabela's cancelled my order and didn't even tell me (then asked if I wanted to order again - no thanks), so I figured I'd buy from a company where I can talk to someone who knows something about something. The folks at Gorge even put the line and backing on my reel. These guys were great and I'd highly recommend them. Perhaps one day I will get to visit their store in person. read more

Hood River may not be a large town, but the Gorge Fly Shop is among the best. The selection that is available is top notch and the staff are great. Travis is fount of information and is always very helpful. Sometimes when you walk into a fly shop they have the "fly shop feel." I have a big fly fishing trip coming up next yr (NZ). happened to be in Hood River so thought I'd check out Gorge Fly Shop, as had seen some positive reviews. SUPER HELPFUL team, led by Travis Duddles, Owner, who spent a Lot of time with me doing a bit of an analysis of my casting and helped me wade through decisions about a new rod (for NZ). Bought a Sage ONE & have been extremely pleased with it, and grateful for Travis (& staff's) help through the process. Since purchasing, have been using it in ID. Also bought a Lamson Litespeed IV, which I am also loving with the One; followed a few wks later with purchase on-line of a Lamson Speedster for a 5# of mine. GREAT personal service, super fast on-line service; Travis & staff give off a feeling of really caring that you get what's best for you & fits your skill level & style.
