Being a hot summer day in the 90's, this was important. I really liked the updated shower and bathroom. All of it nicely done and modern. Although the trains come by regularly, you barely hear them. Finally, the staff were awesome. They were having some difficulty with the elevator when I arrived and offered to help with my bags up the stairs onto the room on the third floor. Genuinely nice people. These guys are firing on all cylinders and I look forward to staying agin in the future.

I'm all up for splurging on destination lodging on occasion, but because I tend to arrive late at night, the amenities are often wasted on me. If you're looking for reliable and reasonably priced lodging in The Dalles, Oregon, I highly recommend you consider The Dalles Inn. It's an independently owned and older property that is well-maintained and has loyal staff. it is centrally located on the west end of the main street that goes through town. The best rooms are in the four-story hotel but there are also two stories of rooms outside of the hotel that have stairs leading up to them from the outside, similar to a motel. I've stayed in both the hotel and the separate building several times. I would be happy with either. There is safe parking. Pre-pandemic, they had a lovely breakfast that rivals that of any I've had in hotels closer to twice the price. Due to the shortage of staff, the breakfast room isn't open right now but they prepare a lovely bag of breakfast goodies for you to take with you as you leave, or bring back up to your room. My most recent stay was on 9/14/22. I had contemplated traveling to see my father in Washington via Walla, Walla, WA, in part because I wanted to stay at the boutique property, The Finch. Online, they were advertising rooms for $157 per night. But when I called, they wanted to sell me a room for $220 plus per night because they were hidden fees and the room advertised online only had a bunkbed. I told them I wanted to look around and we call back if I was interested. I started doing a little research and thank goodness I did, because one of the things that came up repeatedly was customers complaining about the paperthin walls. I got the sense that this remodeled property might have formally been a Motel 6, which I avoid at all costs. I don't care how bougie a place is, I'm not paying a premium for paperthin walls. That's part of the reason why I prefer older properties. I quickly decided to travel via my normal route and called to get a room at The Dalles Inn. One of the nice things about independently owned businesses that are well-maintained is they usually provide a high level of customer service, which I have always found to be the case at The Dalles Inn. They generally don't have hidden fees either. When I called, the room that were available were outside of the hotel, which I was OK with, but the woman taking my reservation said she would make a note that if there was a cancellation of a similar room inside the hotel prior to my arrival, they would give me that room instead. As it turned out, I was able to get a room on the fourth floor. With my AARP discount, my room cost $81 as quoted. There were no hidden fees. The room was worth every penny. I can't remember the last time I got such a good nights sleep in a hotel room. Usually when I stay at hotels/motels, I need to use ear plugs. Not here. I love that the rooms at The Dalles are large and have bathtub/shower combos. Most newly built properties do not. Everyone seems to be going towards a design that looks similar to what I would consider a fancy Motel 6, including even the new Best Westerns. I had everything I needed in my room, including a well concealed mini fridge. I've been told of the owners of this property also have one or more in Albany, Oregon. I don't ever have a reason to go through Albany, but if I did, I would certainly be researching which properties they own. Highly Recommended!!!

Lots of thuds and thumping and super inconsiderate to us below them. The neighbor right next to us had a dog with them that kept barking when we were using the soaking tub, so we didn't get to use it very long the evening we got there, but we were able to enjoy it early in the morning because the dog was quiet and did not continue to bark. Loved that there was a small record player in the cabin, but wish there was a bigger selection of records in the room and the lounge area. We did really like how close it was to all the breweries and restaurants. Would love to come back with friends next time!

My wife and I stayed for two nights in late April, right at the start of their season. We're in our…read more70s and were looking forward to a quiet glamping experience. The camp itself is clean, well-organized, and the staff were friendly. We'd booked a Deluxe tent but were upgraded to a Suite due to low occupancy, which came with a dedicated parking spot right next to our tent -- a real convenience, especially for anyone with mobility concerns. The Venue: The views from the camp are genuinely beautiful, but potential guests should know that despite the "Columbia River Gorge" branding, the camp is not actually on the river. The food was our biggest disappointment. We tried to give them the benefit of the doubt since it was opening weekend, but by day two it was clear the kitchen wasn't hitting its stride. My burger was fine, but my wife's chicken sandwich was overly salty with a panko coating that tasted previously frozen. The fries on both visits were over-salted. On the positive side, the s'mores at the fire pits in the evening were a nice touch, and with low occupancy, the fire pit area was relaxing. The food is something easily within the capability of camp management to improve, and I suggest they do. This is not an inexpensive venue and the food is priced accordingly, so you want it to be really good. We expected glamping to skew toward an older crowd looking for a comfortable outdoor experience, but the demographic here leans young - couples, families with kids, dogs. The noise wasn't a problem at night, but occupancy during our stay was only 30%. With more kids and pets it could get a bit noisier at night. It's worth knowing what to expect. And if you've ever glamped internationally - say, a tented safari camp in East Africa - you best calibrate your expectations accordingly. This is a nice, roomy tent with a bed, not a luxury wilderness tent. The Service: The service was friendly and helpful! There is no electrical power in the tents, other than what you get from a battery pack, which the camp provides you with. I also got a large battery pack capable of handling my CPAP machine at night. You need to let them know about this ahead of time. The Tent: The tent is very roomy! While there are two chairs on the tent porch, there is no table of any kind, which makes sitting out there with a bottle of wine and glasses somewhat inconvenient. There is definitely room for a small table. We had the feeling the tents are geared to move people towards the group area and the restaurant/drink tent where there are lots of tables and chairs. There is also no place to hang anything up. Just putting a couple of hooks somewhere would be worth it, we thought. The bed was a very nice King and I have to say quite comfortable! I brought my own pillow from home, though, which is always a nice thing to remember to do. The cold at night was uncomfortable, but that's April in the Gorge, and not a fair criticism of the camp. However, we had very warm comforters and blankets, and the gas fireplace helped! We slept well! Tip: Start the fireplace earlier in the day, before dusk. Our first night we waited till evening and the fireplace never was able to overcome the cold, but the next day when we started in earlier, it warmed up the tent much better! Exploring the Area: If you are like my wife and I, we like to explore. So, we looked at the map and thought we would drive up to Klickitat Canyon, but soon found ourself off the grid with no phone signal, so our GPS went crazy and we abandoned the effort after going in circles a couple times. LOL. Tips: This was an unforced error on my part as I should have downloaded some offline maps of the area and also brought along a paper map, just in case. These are things I recommend you do if you want to head out into the hills and dirt roads. We were rusty and it showed. Winery visits: There are a number of wineries within easy driving distance. We visited Jacob Williams and highly recommend it. Delicious wine, amazing view, and food to boot! Bottom line: Under the Canvas on the Columbia Gorge is a pleasant enough stay in a beautiful setting, good for families, but not something we'll be repeating. And for the price point, the food needs to improve.

The tent is bare bones as described - a bed, toilet/sink/shower and a table/sofa. You're living out of your suitcase as there isn't a place to hang up (or dry off clothes after getting wet in the rain). There is no electricity in the room so you do need to be on top of charging the rechargeable lanterns by the bedside and bathroom, which they do provide power banks for. There is also a fireplace which was so needed as it's cold in October. There are no trails on the premise so you do have to drive else for anything - waterfalls, trails, etc. And unfortunately the moon was bright one night and the next night was cloudy so we were not able to stargaze. There is Embers, the onsite restaurant and it's really good. Ordered breakfast and dinner for 2 nights. The selection is good so it feels like there's something for everyone. At night there are smores to roast by the campfire. They also have a lot of games to play in the lobby tent. One odd thing is that the neighbors don't seem friendly as they posted signs all the way from the main road to right where the lodgings are saying Under Canvas not welcomed. It does give a bit of a negative vibe.
