Recently, my car started making a clicking noise, which eventually sounded like nearby construction. In a panic, I called my uncle, a mechanic, who listed off expensive possible issues. I first went to Wallace Auto Shop, nearby, since I was nervous about driving it. They quoted $900 to replace the A/C compressor. With my uncle on the phone, he suggested a cheaper fix--a shorter belt--but they refused, which is no problem. My uncle then called KisKis, and Michael assured me I could come in. Already stressed, Michael reassured me that I wouldn't leave until it was fixed. As a graduate student with tight finances, I feared the worst, but the final cost was only $165. I was so relieved, and Michael, seeing me upset, treated me like his own daughter. The kindness and service were exceptional, and I'll definitely return if anything happens to my car.

Well after an hour and a half of waiting, and my car sitting where I can see it in the parking lot, they finally call me to the counter to check out. My appointment was for a FULL SYNTHETIC oil change.... They chose to do a synthetic blend. And the only way I found out, is because I went to use a $20 coupon for a FULLY SYNTHETIC oil change, and was told they could only deduct $10 because it was a mix. Meanwhile, while all this was going on, they left my car running in the parking lot with the windows down while it was snowing outside for 15-20 minutes!!! Lastly, when I got in my car... they left my glovebox on the floor! Ridiculous.

They itemized all sorts of small charges on the bill for things like lube that would be normally be included with the shop labor rates. So it's labor plus a bunch of little charges that eventually add up plus the parts. My recommendation would be to specifically ask if they need to install the "premium" parts or if there is a good quality substitute for the extra expensive premium parts. They installed all premium parts without asking or anything (smart on their part, I don't blame them) so at the end it was much more pricey than expected. I am definitely satisfied with the quality of the work, but it cost me a pretty penny. If money wasn't an issue for me at all, this shop would definitely be my go to for everything from routine to big problems. What I can say is that when you have no idea what's wrong with your car and it's making awful noises, they can quickly pinpoint the issue and get you back on the road in no time. So if a higher price point isn't an issue, and the priority is to fix the issue and fix it RIGHT, Whalen is definitely a great choice.

As we were loading into our cars Monday morning my wife got a call saying that the only person who could do inspections that day (in an hour, no less) had called in and we had to cancel. We had rearranged our schedule to drop her car off so it was very inconvenient. After talking on the phone with them later in the week, we rescheduled for the next Monday morning. The Sunday before, we were dropping off the car when an employee came out and told us that they didn't do NYS inspections on Mondays. Huh? We had booked an appointment with a real person there and they screwed it up again? We were literally seconds from dropping the keys off through the door and leaving. We were told they fired someone and that was the cause of the problem. But TWICE we had planned our schedules to drop off her car and twice were were given VERY last minute cancellations. I don't know what to say, except don't come here for inspections on Mondays even if they tell you they will do them. I am very disappointed in this place.
