In those two hours I learned so much about the nonprofit world and the different organizations in our region. I love that you can hop on their website to easily connect with different organizations needing some support. Right now in COVID times it's a lot of meal packing and tutoring. They even have virtual opportunities for anyone wanting to volunteer without the exposure risks. They also have "skilled" volunteer opportunities for people who are looking to provide their professional services or areas of expertise to nonprofits in our communities. At Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore, there are several locations where you can volunteer. Just knowing that these families are being helped is a reward with in itself, and I appreciate organizations like this one. I'm going to make a commitment to volunteer more often like I used to in the past. It's been about a few days of volunteering, and I personally love the Young Terrace location. There's enough space to move around, and the guests (community) are grateful and very respectful. I've assisted with stocking and food distribution, but would love to see what's behind the scenes. Overall, if you want to give back to the community and feel amazing, check out a few locations, one may be real close to you. Sidenote: For those picking up food, there is a limit for each food category (canned goods, chicken, eggs, etc). You can have a bag full of produce. Quality is in good condition and some almost going bad, but you choose at your own discretion.

The center is wonderful and getting better with time…read more They have programming for just about every age group and demographic within the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community. As an example, they offer support groups for transgender folks, which are definitely a historically under-served portion of the community. Their counselors are spectacular. Some counseling sessions take place in a group setting and are open to the public, free of charge, such as their monthly relationship group counseling sessions, and they offer private counseling as well for nominal fees, which are based on a sliding scale. Game and movie nights are a regular event, and there are free prophylactics that help encourage safe sex among community members. The atmosphere is always light and welcoming. You feel like it's a second home when you're there and you never know who you'll meet or who might pop in while you're there. If you're looking to find friends, surround yourself with affirming and supportive people, searching for help, just wanting to spend a fun night out with good folks, play a few video games, or just relax and read a book from the shelves, there is something for everyone and, if not, don't be afraid to make a suggestion for new programming ideas. They're always looking for how best to serve the community's needs. (Lastly, pay no attention to John R.'s review. It has nothing to do with the center what-so-ever, and it sounds like John has never physically been there. It's fine to state an opinion that it would be nice for the Peninsula to have a center as well, but many folks who complain about the lack of a center on "the other side of the water" have no appreciation for just how much work it was to get the center on the Southside off the ground, and how much work and how many volunteer hours it takes to keep it going. Furthermore, how many centers do you need in how many locations before everyone is happy. This isn't fast food, it's community service, so logically there cannot be a center on every corner in every city. We are lucky to have what we have today and we are thankful for all of our volunteers, donors, and full-time employees.)
