When I did marketing in the Hampton Roads area, I called on PETA and visited this location at least once. It was in my best professional interest not to wear or carry any leather items (shoes, purses, etc.) which I did not. I don't know if it is true today, back then the various floors were designated "dog" or "cat" floors and employees at PETA were allowed to bring their pets, or "companions" or "companion animals" as I understand PETA prefers the latter terms, to work with them! PETA has helped so many people in the local area around their Norfolk office. They have a couple mobile clinics that they drive into rural areas of North Carolina and Virginia where there is little, or sometimes zero, options for vet care. The clinics spay and neuter dogs and cats for low cost or free, and people in this area really need that. I keep an eye out on my local NextDoor app and I see SO MANY people who are struggling to afford spay/neuter, or more often, affordable euthanasia for their animals. I always direct these people to PETA, and everyone is always incredibly thankful. People who live locally to PETA understand how helpful and important they are to the area for helping animals. PETA has also worked really hard to get laws created or changed in order to benefit animals - like chaining laws, making it illegal to leave a dog outside 24/7 without adequate food/water/shelter or out in severe hot and cold weather. The world needs more charity organizations like PETA to help animals. read more

Not sure why they assign people times to pick up pets after they are spayed and then have the audacity to charge a 50 dollar fee if you are late. They told me to pick up our cat at 2:45. Lady calls me and said she will be ready earlier so I show up at 2:30 get told I'll have to wait 30 min. Go back at 3 and get told I'll have to wait another 30 min. TIP: bring previous shot records, especially if you seek a rabies booster (1yr/3yr). Despite having 32 spay/neuter surgeries lined up, the kind PETA mobile clinic team administered 3 shots to my pup safely and quickly for a total cost of $51. Thanks PETA for offering this needed service to the pets/families of Hampton Roads. On the day I visited, I met the nicest people waiting for the same service, one of whom works for PETA. She said it's a good company and she likes the mission, but seeing the cruelty over time has taken a toll on her, especially in regards to trust in humanity. read more

Not only does PETA offer low-cost spay/neuter for nearly 1,000 animals each month, but they also offer free end of life, which cannot be overstated. PETA accepts beloved animal companions every day from families who can't afford the cost of euthanasia at a private vet. PETA's Community Animal Project staff act almost as social workers for animals condemned to live outside within a 2-hour radius of their headquarters. They recheck dogs living in pens or tethered in all weather extremes, provide custom-built doghouses, flea treatment, community education, spay/neuter transportation etc ... it's amazing and far too many people have no idea about this program and the partnership they maintain with local shelter partners. So, PETA after i brought in my retired police dog, had the audacity to TAKE MY DOG, he wasn't neglected or any of that manner, he was in the developing stages of cancer, still treatable stage, so we took him in, they tried taking him and putting him down, We went to a real veterinary clinic and he got the surgery and died sadly to old age 6 years later. This review is for the Neuter Scooter and the people who make the decisions regarding cancelation. I have had appointments scheduled for two months to get cats spayed and neutered. They have canceled 2 appointments and my new reschedule date is over a month away and my cat will have been in heat for weeks and she is at risk of pregnancy. She escaped the home and I have a fear that she might be pregnant. Her mother was a siamese who died in child birth because of a similar situation. Please beware this company's practice on last minute cancelation and inability to provide a TIMELY alternative. I didn't think to review PETA but I just saw this on the recent reviews and had to chime in. This is a very sensitive organization and discussions on this topic generally digress to polarizing discussions so I don't expect to change any minds. However, I think an important question to ask yourself is without extremes, what becomes the norm? I've utilized PETA on several occasions related to birds and animals being hurt in my neighborhood and they are very helpful. It increases global awareness with regard to animal cruelty and as previously stated, helps with rescue efforts. I think a lot of the negative press comes from satellite representatives. PETA can't control everyone that works for them and/or everyone that wishes to do work and claim an association. Do I get why people hate them? Of course. Is it a shallow thought process that comes to this conclusion? In my opinion, yes. read more

Just about everyone either loves or hates People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. As usual, I'm somewhere in the middle. On one hand, they do great work to protect animals. On the other hand, they are extreme and nothing seems good enough to please them. For example, I'm vegetarian, but I'm not vegan, so the PETA workers I have met out at events sort of look down at me. At least that's how it can feel. Another example: I have dogs who I have given an amazing home to, but PETA doesn't like crate training and to them, putting my dogs in the crates they feel safe in is cruel. I do appreciate some of the work they do at PETA. I have joined their protest of Ringling Brothers Circus when it comes to town. It's a quiet protest, where we just hold signs along the street and say nothing. Cars that pass by often honk for support. It raises awareness and doesn't seem extreme. Mostly, I just wish PETA was as kind to people as they are to animals. When getting my master's degree, I was working on a research paper about activist public relations tactics. I contacted a PETA rep to arrange short e-mail interviews with three employees in the company. She promised me only one interview, saying three was too many. I never got an interview, so I contacted PETA in the UK for interviews instead, thinking I would have better luck. Nothing was going to come between me and my 4.0 GPA! The US rep was furious when she found out and was really rude to me. She clearly had no respect or concern for the fact that I had contributed money to their organization. To this day, I hold a grudge, and they won't get any money from me. It's best to just let controversy be, and not get worked up over extremes in my opinion. If you love PETA, you're in luck. Their world headquarters is right on the water in a beautiful building in Norfolk. If you hate PETA, well, they are pretty easy to ignore. read more

I think PETA is an exceptional organization that provides an invaluable service to animals and animal lovers/owners alike. I will say there are members who put on a front and lie about their actions, ethics and beliefs. One in particular is a person who is a diehard PETA member and a self proclaimed vegan. This person promised a family member they would take care of their pet. This person took possession of the pet and from the start, failed to care for the animal. Another individual took care of the pet for several weeks. The PETA member was told they needed to step up to the plate and fulfill their obligation/promise and care for the pet. The PETA member made a "hand over heart" promise they would care for the animal. This person is an obvious alcoholic, drinking 1-2 bottles of wine every evening. Needless to say, the wine this person drinks is not vegan friendly. Given these circumstances, this person has never been a vegan but lies and claims she is. Besides the nightly wine binge, this person take a handful of pills so they "can sleep at night". After promising to fulfill their obligation to their family member, they failed to do so due to being totally polluted every night from alcohol and pills. The poor animal that was to rely on this person in order to survive was completely forgotten. When the family member went to visit the pet, it was found dead. No water/food. Starved to death by this PETA member. Additionally, this person has stolen both cash and items from charity organizations. They have stolen prescription drugs and cash/personal effects from acquaintances of theirs. Its abundantly clear this person is a thief, liar and a scam artist. They're great at putting on a front and is a pro at all of their indiscretions lies and thievery. I think its a shame this person walks around with an attitude that they're a wonderful individual and full of great values. This person should be identified and kicked out the PETA organization. To protect this person would be to condone their actions. read more

People Eating Tasting Animals... I'm part hippie so I resent those shirts, lol. I love PETA though!!! This is the best place to take your little critter because its a not for profit so all expenses pretty much go back to the animals. Well yeah, there's overhead too, but all in all I find it better than a regular vet. As for cost, most services here are offered at significantly lower prices. The only downside is the wait time. There's basically a waiting list for everything... make sure you make the appointment too, because if you get a bad rep as a "no show," they'll stop servicing you. One major complaint that I have to note: I took my little maltese pup here to get a tooth pulled and they charged me $80 for the medication. Fine, "Prince Gummy Bear" needed it, and who's really going to see their child in pain. Not me. Well, guess what that medication consisted of? One Trazodone pill that was literally cut up into 10 little pieces! Each piece acted as a day/night pill for 5 days. Are you eff'ing kidding me! Had I known, I would have cut my own damn Trazodone pill because I certainly had an entire bottle; and guess what? Not even the entire bottle was $80. Not even half, not even a quater... yes, that's right ladies and gents. We're talking about a $15 bottle that I got from the VA--meanwhile, People for The Ethical Treatment of "Animals" (not humans wallets) were hustling $80 a pill. As far as I'm concerned... that's some drug dealer ish. Can you say, hash-tag swindle. Despite being bamboozled for a pill, I still love PETA, and overall, they do a pretty good job over there as far as their services and contributions to the animal kingdom. read more

Many people may say I don't support it because I eat meat, but miss the point that they also fight to end abuse of horse races, circus animals, etc. I am not sure who could say animal abuse in any category is acceptable. I'm so glad that there are people out there who really care. Throughout the years I have received letters & articles by mail from PETA and other animal organizations providing me with current facts going on. I donated money for the care of animals and realized what's the point to send money if in return you get gifts such as cards with envelopes, wrapping paper,calendars, shirts, cups, stickers, pens, etc it's costly and needless to say it's taking away for the care of these animals. What people need to understand is your donations are for the animals, not you. For many years I helped with animal rescuing(mostly cats & kittens), fostering and finding homes for them. Until I received a letter from PETA on the China Fur, the letter provided information about these poor animals that are being thrown into crammed cages breaking their bones,fesces all over, no food nor water, waiting a most excruciating way of death to be skinned alive, for what? For their fur. Years before this letter i've received letters and articles on animal abuse, TV shows about it, constantly being brought to my attention. Each one and each time brought many tears. The China Fur was the icing on the cake for me. I was so angry that I could no longer help out with rescuing, also for fear I would keep every animal I came across. At that time in my life I could have easily hurt anyone who abused an animal. I would cry, get mad, yell at people, it was awful, I just didn't handle it. My mom said I was just as bad as those hurting animals because you shouldn't return violence with violence. I'm glad for PETA in many ways. I would have never realized that I needed to handle things differently. I prayed incessantly to God and put all my problems in his hands, so I would be able to continue helping with rescuing and also put my energy towards setting up fund raising campaigns. Within time that weight was lifted off my shoulders, the torment and pain it brought me was finally gone but will never be forgotten. China isn't the only one's who are doing this, it's going in our country too. Throughout the world these cruel acts are taking place. PETA may not be perfect, but who is? At least they are trying. They are providing information to inform you, that the more people the more power to to take a stand to fight for the rights for our animals. Please help them. They have signs about how crating your dogs is a form of abuse and how if you throw your dog into the river, they will come after you... again... a little weird, but not too much of an issue for me! read more

It was hard to decide between three and four stars. They have a mobile spay and neuter unit that travels around the extended area doing extra low-cost procedures for animals. I LOVE that. I made sure to express how grateful I was for this service and the positive impact it has on the area and lives of animals. Getting my female cat fixed cost $45. It's a same-day procedure and includes their sedation and a pain medicine injection, which was very important to me. They did a great job with my cat, I can't thank them enough. She was fully recovered within 48 hours. But, there was some cons as well. I made my appointment about a month in advance. I confirmed the 8:30 drop off and 2:00 pickup about one hundred times because my memory is abnormally terrible for my age, always has been. When I drop my kitty off, she hands me a paper and says pickup is 1:30. You're probably wondering why that is a big deal... Well, I (after pounding 2:00pm in my brain for a month) completely forgot the time had changed and showed up at 2:10. That gave me a pretty hefty fee of $25. At that point, it would have been equal or more expensive than to taking my cat to a regular veterinary office that is much closer to my house. I checked. A late fee over 50% of the entire cost of the surgery is outrageous in my opinion! Ten bucks would me much more understandable. It WAS my fault for not remembering the new time, so I paid it without any grief to the attendant... But, PETA, you should really stick to your confirmed times *especially* if you're going to give someone a 56% late fee charge if miss it. The late fee is too large, chop it down. No reason to charge so much for a sleeping cat sitting in your holding area for thirty minutes. Bottom line is, if you're looking for a low-cost spay or neuter, there are many in the area that you can find via Google. PETA does a great job surgery-wise, but make sure you're spot-on with any pick-up times. read more

This review is for PETA's mobile clinic. Last fall, my husband and I rescued 2 five week old feral kittens. We had not intended to expand our household, and two new babies at a time can really be taxing on the budget. Much of their testing and vaccinations were handled through our regular vet, but when we received an estimate of the cost of spay and neuter surgery, it seemed insurmountable. Between the two kittens, and depending on their surgical needs, we could spend as much as $900! I begin researching low cost alternatives for the kittens' surgery. Many options were not available to us, and some organizations simply didn't respond to my inquiries, whether by email, or by phone. This was not the case with PETA. Rachel, who works with the mobile clinic division, responded to my inquiry within 48 hours. She helped me narrow down a date when the clinic would be in Norfolk, and she also answered questions, and made communication open and easy. She was professional and concise. Saturday, April 11, was the day we had the little male neutered. Drop off was organized, and the technicians and assistants were kind and competent. The neuter went perfectly, and they even called to let me know he'd done well, and was ready for pickup earlier than scheduled. For a Feline Leukemia Test, Feline Leukemia vaccine, neuter including tattoo and pain medication, AND a nail clipping, I paid $90. That's less than the cost of the FeLeuk Test and Vaccine alone at my vet! Two days later, our boy's doing well, and I have only accolades for this organization's community outreach. Yesterday, the Virginia House Agriculture Committee tabled a bill, SB 359, that would have clarified existing law to state that TNR is not illegal. It would allow feral cat caretakers to neuter and release cats without fear of prosecution. And it is being supported by TNR advocates across the nation. But PETA opposed the law, as did other regressive organizations, that favor round up and kill campaigns for feral cats. Tragically, PETA misled its supporters into writing legislators asking them to continue the age old practice of catch and kill. I dont care how you get your message across, whether it is girls in bikinis, pamphlets, protests ect. I support you by joining in on protests, handing out vegetarian starter kits, financial gifts and volunteering. I see the good things all of you do and a lot of times it is on your own time. It is dedication. I admire it. I could tell people countless stories of how you answer calls at all times of day, drive hundreds of miles to save one animal, educate people on properly caring for their animals, fostering homeless pets until they get adopted, adopting animals that will never have a chance otherwise, your free clinic, giving of free dog houses and sending vegan/vegetarian information to people who have asked for it free of charge. I know that when a lot of people are out partying on Saturday night a lot of you are driving out in the country giving out straw to backyard dogs so they will be warm or visiting the homeless animals at the SPCA or just speaking out for animals like the forgotten circus animals who live with daily abuse. There is so much more. I would like to add that when demonstations are done, they are done peacefully and respectfully even when others walking by are NOT respectful. I have the utmost respect for PETA and want to say thank you again from all the animals you haved saved and given a better life. You are my heros along with the Human Society, Farm Sanctuary, ALF and many others. You are working together to make a better world for animals and people. I hope you read this and it gives you more inspiration to know that a lot of people feel like I do. NO, I do not work for PETA. There are haters.
