Since I like to stretch my dollar further, I tend to pick up some great finds at thrift stores. And "Goodwill" is no exception as I've been to dozens of their locations in various cities around the United States. I've found some great finds as no two stores are alike. The one I am reviewing is directly on San Pablo Ave and in between 66th/67th St's in the Oakland/Berkeley area. There is a dedicated parking lot but keep in mind that it does fill up quickly so don't be surprised if you have to hunt for a space in the nearby residential area. Furthermore, there is also a donation area with signs telling you exactly where to go. For the record, this Goodwill is pretty standard with their hours of operation being open for business seven days a week from 10:00am to 7:00pm. The inside of this location is a standard square shape with one main entrance where the security guard stands. During my visit which was the afternoon of Saturday 10/7/2023 from 3:30-4:00pm, I actually didn't find anything worth buying. I did see a pair of khaki chinos that I wanted to try on (for $6.99) but as frustrating as this was, all of the fitting rooms were closed. I understand during the Covid-19 pandemic but in late-2023, this is unacceptable. I also do not live in this area as it would be too much of a hassle trying on their clothes then having to return it in a different city for store credit. Aside from that, this location carries a wide assortment of mens, womens, and childrens clothing/shoes as well as kitchen items, small electronics, books, records/CDs/DVDs, small appliances, toys, purses, and luggage. I was a bit disappointed that this location did not meet my expectations but the selection can vary greatly depending on what comes in and what is sold. With that said and done, I am giving the Oakland (San Pablo Ave) "Goodwill" a below average two-star rating.

GW can move trinkets like these faster if they lowered the prices to $2, instead of just having it sit there taking up space.

First time going in, they have a pretty good selection and are reasonably priced. Would go again if I'm in the area.

Staff there is very efficient and helpful. Drive in from San Pablo Avenue and make a "U" to exit onto San Pablo Avenue.

Ask the Community - Goodwill Store & Donation Center

Are they open for donations?

What days/hours are donations accepted? I know it's different than general hours and there is no info on the website.

For the moment, it's 10 AM to 2 PM. They're getting a ton of end-of-the-year/beginning of the year donations. I think they usually except donations until 3 PM. And I believe it's seven days a week.

Review Highlights - Goodwill Store & Donation Center

Their small appliances tend to be dated (or "retro") but functional and they stock some decent kitchenware.

We got there maybe 20 minutes before closing so I didn't get to explore the way I would like, but I really dug the book section. Hard covers are two dollars and soft covers are one dollar. They're arranged by color which I thought was very visually appealing. It was easier to look through the titles that way. I'll be going back soon to check out the store a bit more and I'll update my review accordingly. I'm totally happy with my book purchases.

Some may even call it a bit strange, as it is broken up into two separate locations. One of their stores is a main storefront on Telegraph Avenue. Here you will find the women's clothing. There are rows and rows of it, so there is a lot to look through. Their second location, where they sell men's clothing, is next door where the Cal Shop is. You enter through the Cal Shop and then you go upstairs. FYI: The stairs are over to the left of the entrance. Here you will also find tons of clothing options. This is truly one of those shops where if you are looking for particular style of clothing you can probably find it. The prices at this business are very reasonable. They have a wide variety of clothing, all of which are good quality. The staff here don't bother you as you're looking around. So, if you want to shop in peace, this business is for you. Overall, this is probably (currently) the best vintage clothing store in Berkeley. They've offer a lot of options for a very good price.

First they snapped at me about checking in my bag. Then they snapped at me for looking at a clothes rack that was apparently not for sale. Then they refused to sell me the clothes that I found. I found the most beautiful and unique item I was so excited to buy, I waited in like admiring the piece and talking about how special it was just for them to refuse to sell it to me because the tag fell off in the dressing room. I saw the tag as soon as I picked up the item, which said $16, and there was a $16 tag on the floor of the dressing room I tried it on in and they still refused to sell it to me. All three of the employees at the front were very rude about it, didn't show any sympathy at all, just told me no. I even asked if there was a way I could keep it on hold until someone could price it and they still said no. Very disappointed, not going back

Elmwood

Help fund a much-needed new building for Berkeley Humane (5/5 Green Stars)…read moreIn early November, the Berkeley Humane opened a second thrift store - right here in the Elmwood! I was already a fan of the Solano store - I think it's one of the nicest thrift shops in Berkeley. This branch is smaller but it's really focused on the nicest things, arranged beautifully. If you've never wandered into a thrift store and have reservations about going in, then start right here. Many items are brand new, with tags still attached, and I think the prices are reasonable, considering this. A large portion of the clothes are women's (although that hasn't stopped me shopping for a winter jacket) but there is also a small men's section behind the changing room. Check out the cool collection of Christmas ornaments, right now! 100% of proceeds benefit the Berkeley Humane nonprofit - particularly to help fund a new building that they need after a fire in 2010 destroyed a large part of their building on 9th and Carlton. As you may know, back in the 1970s, the BH made a commitment that no healthy or treatable shelter animals in the Society's care would be euthanized. It's amazing that the BH got started almost 120 years ago - in 1905, the Berkeley branch of the SPCA was set up with a mission to improve conditions at the "pound" (which were reportedly not good at the time). The current facility on 9th and Carlton was acquired all the way back in 1933. The new building will be named the Bay Area Animal Resource Center (BAARC), and will include a veterinary medical hospital and adoption center and will include more services for people with pets who might be in need of a little extra support. It will feature significantly enlarged space for cat adoptions, including several "catios" that will provide felines with natural light and fresh air. Berkeley Humane is a private non-profit organization that does not receive government funding, so community support is essential to its mission. I'm giving the Berkeley Humane Thrift shop 5/5 Green Stars for social and environmental impact. This takes very little explaining. Buying clothes and other items from thrift shops is one of the best ways to reduce your environmental footprint and improve your social impact. You are avoiding the production of new materials, with all problems of the fast-fashion-driven textile industry. At the same time you are supporting a nonprofit that has taken care of local neglected or abandoned animals for more than a century. This year, Berkeley Humane will have over $400,000 in expenses to medically prepare over 1,000 animals for adoption. Your support will save lives.

I was interested in the Italian charms to make my own bracelet, very nostalgic and at $1/piece it was basically a steal! Such a good price! However it was mostly letters and not much designs. And this station is located right by the door with high foot traffic so I couldn't really peacefully look through. Definitely best to go when there's no crowd (but idk when their least busiest hour is) since the place is tiny! No space to walk through. I went at 5pm on a Saturday evening and it was packed. All the jewelry and accessories were inside and photos, stickers, stationery items were outside. Patches and spoons (my fav part. Wish I knew how to turn them into rings because they had really unique designs) were located at the back of the store. Overall, got some turquoise rings and a bangle for $15 total. Not bad. They had a good range of sizes. My ring finger size is 8 and they had that size as well as bigger sizes of 9-10. Pretty cool it wasn't just small sizes.
