Pleasant experience. A little busy but everyone was nice and we found what we needed.

The only issue I have with the mission is the racist remarks that Lisa makes. Yesterday she told a…read moreSpanish speaking customer that she is an American and she doesn't need to learn Spanish The customers were very upset by her comment. She went on to say that they always want something for nothing. I love the great bargains, however when I am checking I am questioned about the items in my 3 dollar box. Lisa is in a constant state of frustration and anger. She is disrespectful to staff and customers. Lisa is very unpleasant to be around. Kevin is mean, short tempered to residents, employees, guest andcustomers. He is temperamental and passive aggressive. His tone is bitter and sarcastic. Avoid him at all cost unless you like verbal abuse. Last but not least is the pastor who rules with an iron fist a sword in the other. The crucifixion is branded on his chest. He also shears a crown of thorns and a tattered purple cape. The pastor rules by intimidation and fear. His very presence cause them to shake and quiver. They are afraid to look in to piercing gaze. Because they know the price they will have to pay. I had one encounter with the pastor. He told not to speak to Lenny because he can't hear me. I told him that I speak to Lenny every time I am in the store. I looked him dead in the eye and trust me he got the message.

I am appalled at what I witnessed here in just 7 days. First I want to say that I'm grateful for…read morethe intention of the Martinsburg rescue Mission. Unfortunately, Kevin and Patrick are running it for the wrong reasons. These two gentlemen are running this place not in the way it was envisioned by the creators. I got there on August 21st transitioning straight out of a 90 day inpatient recovery center. I thought that this was a place to help an individual build a foundation and become independent quickly. I was wrong. I had a job that I worked remotely to earn income. I was told that I would have to leave if I want to keep this job or quit to stay. That put me in-between a demeaning situation that forced me to give up this employment just so I could have a place to lay my head and not on the streets. Then, I had been making phone calls, all day everyday trying to better my life and become independent. I let Kevin know that I called the Homeless coalition. Kevin belittled me and said that was not allowed. Said that the program doesn't allow such things. I am not allowed to have my phone between 8am and 4: 00pm and I have to work for them (without income) If not, I must leave and take all my personal things with me until after 4:00 pm. To me this is knocking someone down who wants to better his life and concentrate on his recovery. It's embarrassing to have to carry your personal belongings on the streets everyday all because I want to better my life. This did not sit well with me. The supervisors insist that the program is to create good productive disciples to re-enter the community. It is anything but that. It is more like a sweatshop, a labor camp. People are working 8 hours a day 6 days a week without getting one dime. People still have responsibilities and bills to pay. Now I understand that they feed you and supply a bed to sleep in, but to tell someone they have to complete 60 days of their program before even allowed to start looking for work is cruel and unusual punishment. I believe there are federal laws that protect people from the slave labor trade. The Martinsburg rescue Mission is anything but helping people get on their feet quickly. It is a very demeaning program that wants to keep you down for free labor. So I had to go. It was interfering with my recovery and the ability to build my foundation quickly without being chastised or threatened because I want to better myself. I hope someone will look into this and really help the people in there now. Kevin and Patrick are not fit to help run a program that was visioned to help an individual be successful. This is not what God wants from people in charge of upholding the vision of Christ.
