The longtime home to all things Fairport. Amazing ownership. So much history and Fairport pride…read more Every Red Raider needs to make it a point to shop here.

Every time I show up here, I feel like I crashed my DeLorean in the parking lot and got transported…read moreback to 1972. Mr. Barranco is from another era. He sells the red and white Fairport sweatshirts that everyone in town has, but he also sells new-old-stock clothing, shoes and accessories. He's a salesman from another time, he will often compare his prices to Sibley's, McCurdy's and B. Forman Co. Any Rochesterian would know that those department stores have long since closed... Not Mr. Barranco, those stores are still the major players in the Rochester area and he's doing a service to you by offering his items at such low prices... (which they are). I'm amazed at how he has managed to stay in business for so long. I'd go on about all the great treasures you can find here, but you're just going to have to see it for yourself; it's a total time capsule. For many years, he didn't have a card machine. Since he was cash only, I remember trying to explain to Mr. Barranco that I had to run to the ATM. He was confused and said "the bank isn't open on Saturdays." He was concerned that I was not going to be able to withdraw the money from my account. On a recent visit, I was surprised to hear that his older register broke down and somebody sent him into the 21st century. He now accepts cards, but it takes him awhile to figure out all the space age technology before him. I love this place, he seems to have an endless source of great vintage clothing and his prices can't be beat! Every visit I make to Fairport is accompanied by a requisite visit to Barranco's.

Lu's is well organized with a rack dedicated to Chico's apparel and another to white jeans...though some of the other apparel racks are a bit on the overstuffed side. The shoes were displayed by size, which was refreshing to see in a reseller shop. Worth the visit if you are looking for Vera Bradley and Coach bags. The unmarked Vera shelf is one of the first things you notice as it faces the entrance. The prices are comparable to other consigners, in the $12-$40 range, but their vast variety and stock sets them apart. There is even a basket full of VB coin pouches, wallets and wristlets -- some new with the tags still attached! Other designer brand bags I found besides Coach were Dooney & Bourke and Michael Kors. These were in the $20-$150 range. Overall, I am adding this stop to my east side second hand shopping route and adventures. Even though the prices are a bit higher than moderate for clothing and jewelry. Lu's Back Door is a couple of miles after Pittsford GoodWill and JUST before Second Bloom...which is minutes from Fairport Landing where you find Anything Goes and Your Best Friend's Closet...and many more. Goodness this is just one quarter of the area!

I agree with the reviewers who note arrogance and "attitude" in the staff. I consigned at Lu's for…read moreyears, but things went south fast after LuAnn was no longer there. The current owner doesn't do her credit!

Saint's Place - Shopping at the Clothing Closet

Saint's Place

It's hard to find a good place to donate to these days. How do you know that your donated items…read morewill actually go to people in need? I had a closet that needed to be purged desperately and Saint's Place has a community in need of gently used women's clothes. When my friend told me that they'll use my old clothes right away, I was sold. It was a match made in philanthropic heaven, so to speak. Saint's Place is located in Pittsford, adjacent to the St. Louis Church. Their goal is to aid and assist newly arrived refugees by giving them clothes, housewares, tutorial services, and by setting them up in new apartments. Lots of families rely on Saint's Place to get set up upon arriving in Rochester. What I really liked the most is that the refugees pick out clothes and leave with them that same day. Here's how it works: you can just leave your donations on the back porch and grab a receipt if you itemize. Make sure you keep everything together in a plastic bag to protect from the elements! For those of you who love a good garage sale, Saint's Place has an annual super sale. This is noteworthy because it's the one time of the year when they accept donations of non-children's books. Saint's Place normally only takes children's books because the refugees are only now learning to speak English. Clothing donations should be of the casual variety, maybe a little business casual to be thrown in. Pickup is available as well if you can't drop off your donations easily. Of course, volunteering is also good too! I'm glad my friend told me about Saint's Place because I know my old clothes will be put to good use here. If you need to clean out your closet, consider donating here, there are lots of families who will be glad you and I did.
