Foodlink-Curbside Market is an organization which has been around for many years. They are a group of people trying to make it possible for all people to eat. There main goal is to help people in poverty levels get FOOD at affordable rates. Each week they make certain stops at various places around the city on scheduled days. In this picture they are at a local senior citizens apartment complex. Their scheduled days here is Tuesday. Poverty in Rochester and other places in the nation is at critical levels. Many of these people involved are volunteers. Currently at this time Foodlink_Curbside Market is closed for a few weeks but will reopen in January 2022. read more

Never been to a food bank before. But this place was really cool. It's awesome to hear how much food they hand out to people that need it. They hand out over 5000 bags a week. I was really impressed with what they do. The place is huge and they have a fridge and freezer that both hold about a million pounds of food. Thanks for the tours and for a great time helping sort food for people that need it. I would love to volunteer again. read more

As a educator, I unfortunately witness first hand the poverty/lack of food that some of my students and their families have. My school district has worked closely with foodlink over the years which has granted me a few volunteer opportunities, which were nothing short of rewarding. I love sorting - so my favorite is packing up boxes of canned goods or stuffing backpacks of goodies, because I know the joy it brings when a student or a student and their family receives the items Thanks to Food Link - my school has a stocked pantry that students can shop at, even filled with toiletry items and we were able to provide Thanksgiving meals for some! A GREAT idea for someone looking to spend a few hours to volunteer to an even greater cause! read more

Over the few years I've lived in Rochester, I've volunteered here about 5 or 6 times with varying degrees of satisfaction. Foodlink is a large regional food bank that distributes to over 450 centers with a goal of a hunger free community. Every time you go, you never know what type of work you are going to work. What I've enjoyed the most, was sorting food donations bins into the different categories like snacks, pasta and sauces. I've also helped get bulk orders palletized and ready for shipment. I love the feeling of giving back, don't get me wrong. But working in Corporate America, the occasional lack of efficiency and effective use of volunteer time was sometimes frustrating. In the end though, the feeling of helping the less fortunate people of Monroe County and 10 surrounding counties makes the drive home feel great. read more

My review of Foodlink is for the volunteer experience. If you're looking for a *fantastic* volunteer experience, sign-up for a 3-hour shift in the warehouse. It's fairly easy work -- usually of sorting cans and boxes of non-perishable food (or bagging-up produce or packing backpacks). But here's the rub -- you'll be walking and lifting light weights and doing some squats for your three hours, so skip the gym that day! Your heart will grow three sizes at the end of your shift, from feeling so good about the work you do! And you will be astounded and glowing at how *much* you accomplish in three hours.
