It just so happens that on the day we visited, the store had a small setup of free hot apple cider and little sandwich cookies available for shoppers. This gave us a special glimpse of Minnesota hospitality and set things off on a great foot on a very chilly day! We looked through Christmas decorations and old games and I was thankful to find an excellent prank hallmark ornament for my sister and a nostalgic hallmark ornament for myself--a little mouse atop a spool of thread, sewing popcorn kernels for a Christmas garland. We looked at a variety of scarves and coats and then found a cute, new/barely-used, button-up shirt with little mustaches for my partner. All of this--delicious hot cider, Christmas and childhood nostalgia, easily transported "souvenirs" from our visit to Minnesota, and a crisp new shirt for my partner--all for less than $10 made for a pretty great first-time thrifting experience and a memorable stop on the trip for me!

They also always seem to be short staffed at every location - I have walked out before instead of standing in line to buy one item I didn't need - but I am not complaining, I get it! They always have a ton of furniture and clothes. Sometimes you can find salvaged goods that are new but I don't see that sort of stuff at the Fridley location as often.

Sometimes it can get overwhelming, but this experience wasn't. I myself found an awesome pair of lightly worn black PVC sneakers that are gonna look great with some stuff that's already in my wardrobe-- part of the fun of thrifting is creating new outfits from completely random purchases! I found a book and some stick on nails I waited in line for and knew the cashier was not selling items that didn't have tags (there's a sign up front that says this policy too). However I thought all books were a set price and didn't worry until it was my turn and she asked if the book had a tag. I said no and told her where I found the book on the shelf. She said she can't sell it without a tag and just stared at me as if she was waiting for me to either put up a stink or ask more. I just said well I guess I can't buy it then? She set it aside. I did ask if she could just price it or get a manager and she said she was a manager and left it at that. Why was it on the sales floor then without a sticker if you have this policy? She said it would be out on the floor in the next day or so after getting a price. I stopped by later in the week after that to see if I could find the book again but I sadly couldn't find it, I got some other items instead and the gentlemen this time was super friendly and was astounded at hearing about my previous visit. If I knew about their policy beforehand I would have just taken a sticker off one item and put it on the book...I won't stop here again as it's out of the way.

Location was inconvenient for me as it was a 45 minute drive, but the friendly and helpful staff, combined with their large and beautiful facilities made it worthwhile. Second Harvest Heartland was easy to work with. Their online reservation system made it easy to see which time slots could accommodate us. We were even able to use their large meeting room space to host a 2 hour lunch and networking event prior to our volunteering session. The large room included 2 screens for projecting presentations from your laptop, sound system with microphone and a strong and free WiFi. All of this was of great value to our group! As one of the leaders of Asian Professionals Alliance in MN (APAM), we brought together 70 volunteers from across APAM member companies: 3M, Best Buy, Cargill, General Mills, Medtronic, Target & US Bank. Not only was this venue large enough to accommodate our large group, they were so organized, gave us great instruction and constantly kept the workplace clean, comfortable. They had 6 computers at the entrance for each individual to register for the event. Half of our group boxed care packages for senior citizens while the other half worked to inspect and package 40 pound bags of potatoes for food shelves across the country. My favorite part is that they share the results of your volunteer efforts at the end of your shift. I would absolutely recommend this place for volunteering sessions - for individuals, small groups and large groups!

The sober homes partner with IOP programs (outpatient), most of whom subsidize the rent. NuWay treatment center will pay for a residents's entire cost of rent while they are active in the program. There are both shared and single rooms, depending on availability and occupancy. I give JCS 5 stars, and if there were more to give, I would!!

Five years ago we sold our large home in the suburbs where we had raised our two daughters. We…read moremoved to a lovely historic house with apartments by the river in downtown St Paul just blocks from a large 1960's Salvation Army. A year later my husband left to homestead his mother's inherited condo. Finding myself alone and unwilling to go to bars, I walked over and joined a women's and a senior's group at that Salvation Army, and a women's group at this Broolyn Park Citadel as well. These were the BEST decisions I could have made! Years ago I tutored junior high kids in East Harlem, taught camping hiking skills to inner city fresh air camp kids, was hired on an Antioch work study semester to be the first Spanish interpreter at age 19 at Jacobi ( welfare) municipal hospital in the Bronx, was the first college student hired by the Job Corps working in downtown LA teaching Chicanas how to read, then assisted the Exec Director at Boston's largest Community Action $20 million program ABCD right out of college. My last job in the public sector was as an EEO Officer for CETA under the Dept of Labor for 10 counties in Massachusetts. I spent four wonderful years within the Salvation Army, participating in their programs, accepting some of their wonderful donated food from Lunds and Byerlys and observing TWO citadels' (other in downtown St Paul) staff and participant children, families. SO many social service programs are corrupt today: their staff help themselves FIRST to all donations given to the program. This is WIDESPREAD. Not here at Salvation Army. This is a church but they do not aggressively prosytelize to participants. Instead they maintain order in their food give aways through more " Christian" philosophies in crowd control. Many people would be starving if it were not for the Salvation Army that DAILY send trucks to their local supermarkets to pick up almost expired food. So you find the homeless, students, seniors, immigrants and middle class folk that are unemployed altogether waiting for this food. Some Citadels also run official food shelves only for qualified residents in their specific assigned region of care. These food banks ( located inside some Salvation Army " citadels") help those who qualify with utility bills just before disconnect, sometimes a little for rent, finding housing, sometimes clothing/ warm jackets blankets, hats mittens gloves, children's' new winter coat give aways, etc. etc etc. TRULY AMAZING care. Some have after school programs and day care at prices according to what people can afford. They have in EVERY major city the VERY BEST program in the country for SUCCESSFULLY helping folk quit drugs. I know, for in Virginia I would bring many inner city and other young people to their FULL year live/ work in programs. This Citadel is run by the Pollancos, a WONDERFUL couple who ran a truly intense citadel previously in the SOUTH SIDE of CHICAGO! Yes, Chicago!!! And, for many years to boot!! I met Capt Jen and her terrific women's group on an Arts and Crafts weekend in the Salvation Army's camp up north. That was the VERY best weekend I had in many many years! Capt Jen is an outgoing, effervescent, joyous loving human being AND an outstanding brilliant speaker, I could listen to her for hours! All the Salvation Army Citadels survive primarily upon donations from Christmas Bell Ringing. Corporate donations from neighboring businesses in their regions are a massive help. Bell Ringing donations have been down the past few years because our younger populations are less familiar with the highly effective years long programs the Salvation Army run in small communities EVERYWHERE. I bell rang in an open FREEZING walk way in front of Roseville's Macy's for 3 years!! I brought my authentic 5 foot stuffed Grinch, twinkly lights for the bucket, Santa sitting on a battery operated Rudolf with blinking nose and my authentic sleigh bells saying Happy holidays in Spanish and English! Yup and it all worked! Oh and wore a tall pixel hat with green red small lights!

I have never written a review for anything before but my experience at the goodwill in Savage was horrendous and I felt a review was needed. I usually don't shop this goodwill but had a 50 percent off coupon given by my mom. I went to pay for 2 items today and I also had a coupon that was sent to my email from goodwill. The cashier was one of the rudest bitchiest people I have ever encountered at a goodwill! Considering this job is supposed to "be helping prepare her for meaningful work" in our world she fails. She was an aging, balding curly haired middle aged woman who proceeded to tell me I could not use the two 50 percent off coupons. I would be fine with this but she would not shut up and kept telling me about all the horrible customers who tried to use 6 of these coupons at a time and were "holding up her line" and how if I tried to come back and use another coupon she wouldn't wait on me. Keep in mind these coupons say " one per customer' however they do not say "one per customer per day" or "one per customer per transaction". This woman was a BITCH and i refuse to shop at this goodwill after this horrible interaction. I want management to read this review and fire this woman. She was working Monday 10-26 -15 around 930AM in the SAVAGE MN store off highway 42. She needs another job if she thinks her lot in life is to prevent people from using more than one coupon. I am a social worker and know people are experiencing much worse than this!!! Stay away from this balding, middle aged woman who could probably not find another job. Please goodwill help your employees learn proper customer service!!! I wish there was a place to complain to management about your employees- there is a reason these people can't find other work!!! read more

I get people are enthusiastic even outside the new bin drops, but some large parties kept hogging side sections when I was trying to go through them in a flow. I kept thinking about other things I wanted to see/do in the Twin Cities though so couldn't lock in to the level I really wanted. Next time I'll need to spend a whole day here and be more liberal with my narrowing down step. Unfortunately not trying on everything at my friend's apartment wasn't a good idea because now I'm back in Texas and some items don't fit right.

There are rows of bins, probably 40-60 in the store, and they are filled with clothes, household items, shoes, games, etc! At first glance most of it is less then appealing, but there are definitely hidden gems in these bins! I walked away with a jacket and top for my partner and pants for me! No dressing rooms. There are a ton of people there typically too, so be prepared to be in close proximity and searching bins together! Some of the bins smelled and overarchingly the experience is a little gross when you think about it too long haha. Being gloves if you want and wash up after, you'll be fine! They switch out the bins maybe every 30mins-1 hour, and this is when you find the best stuff that hasn't been picked over. The staff was friendly enough. I was surprised by the prices. You pay by the pound, which is cool! I still expected it to cost less though haha. It was roughly $4/piece for everything I got. Again nothing crazy and good prices for thrifting, but I still expected it to be "dirt cheap" given these items are at their final destination. Overall it's a place I'll come once or twice a year to mix up my thrifting :)

My son and my daughter wanted items and were told that the staff will hold on to it, these items were not locked up. My son bought an item and was told they will lower it to $10 but instead charged him $19. We have thrifted and antique shopped from Duluth all the way to Winona, we are local and decided to try this place for the first time and definitely the last. While you were busy following us thinking just because we are POC, we would steal, Dick and Jane over there were probably stealing. FYI, POC people like to thrift and antique shop too. I have never had this happen, this is the first time, which is just disgusting as we are locals. I'd much prefer the Antique 101 or Elk River Antique. Our POC money is just as good as a white persons. You don't have to follow us because of our skin color.

This is exactly the type of place I think of when I want to go thrifting. There is stuff in every nook and cranny and I probably made about 4-5 rounds throughout the whole place.
