If one aspect of a good accountant is filing your taxes accurately, then Mr. Goodside failed this one. My wife and I had a fairly straightforward return, until I get a letter in the mail from NY state sometime later. It appears that our accountant failed to realize the correct amount of capital gains to attribute to the state. It took me some time to figure out the state was right, and not Mr. Goodside. Time I thought I was gaining by paying an accountant in the first place. If another aspect of a good account is providing answers to your tax questions, then Mr. Goodside fails here again. His answers were often vague or indirect, using jargon as if to avoid follow up questions that instead just dragged out conversations. I'm glad people are finding him useful, but we haven't been back. read more

I was in a hot mess involving several extensions and late filings. Unable to find a tax preparer through friends' recommendations and also not very motivated to overcome my strong indisposition towards facing my tax quagmire, I turned to Yelp. I picked Michael Goodside CPA because he had the most favorable reviews on yelp; I also liked the idea of using a CPA over "professional tax preparers" which could mean anything in terms of knowledge and training. Over the next year Michael has been a saint, always responses to my emails, even after I routinely dropped the ball and failed to follow up on request for documents or other questions from him. Every time I contacted Mike to continue my tax preparations he was always very quick to respond to the point where now, one year later I am a model customer that any CPA would be happy to work with. Mike has a secure portal where you can upload your tax document which is a nice feature. I always upload my forms and then come into his office to finalize everything and sign, but I think if you want to do everything remotely Mike can do it through his web portal. The office is very conveniently located just a two minute walk from the Hoboken Path station and Mike has office hours after 6:00 PM which is a godsend. Added to all of the pros listed above, Mike's rates are super reasonable, much cheaper than going with a national chain and in my opinion, cheaper than other CPAs I've looked at in the city. I was only ever filing a simple tax return, something most people can do themselves online, so perhaps Mike keeps his fee particularly low for that service. If you are looking for a good accountant in the Hoboken or Jersey City area, I highly recommend Goodside Accounting. read more

It's 5 days till tax day. And I'm freaking out because I've been a Turbotax user for years but this year, with 3 state tax, K1s, unemployment payments and investment trading activity, I just knew I couldn't handle tax day by myself. So I called Michael who took care of everything in 2 hours, including e-filing everything and processing all the payments electronically. Michael is very professional and a CPA (unlike those seasonal H&R Block people). He was on time, patient in answering all questions as well as drilling down into details to save me as much money as possible. This was my first experience going to a CPA to get my taxes done, and it was better than what I ever expected. Goodside Accounting was the first place I called to get information and I didn't feel the need to look anywhere else. To begin, Michael, the owner, was really nice and friendly on the phone and answered all my questions and didn't rush me off the phone. He was so flexible with the scheduling and was willing to work around my late work schedule. How amazing is that? When I arrived, he met me outside and was super nice and professional. Also, Michael knows his stuff! He was very thorough when doing my taxes and was very detailed oriented. He even got me more money back than when I did them online. He also took a second look at my prior years taxes and got me a refund for several hundred dollars. He takes the time to walk you through his work and shows you how he arrived at each number. Mike was great. After my brother and sister in law recommended Mike, I decided to give him a shot. My returns were not simple, I sold a NYC Coop with my wife and purchased a Hoboken Condo, had multiple W2 forms, a daughter, rented a condo to tenants, donations, and other random items. Mike was able to slice and dice it all, and get it all into an organized file. He had sound advice and was able to answer all questions I had. His fee was very competitive, in the range of $50-100.
