Goodkind Tattoo was the best experience I could have asked for in getting a tattoo! I went to get my second tattoo there in September 2012 (took me a freaking long time to get a Yelp account, I know) and they set the bar high for any future tattoo experiences I will have. I STILL rave about them to friends considering getting a tattoo and it's been over a year later. I have even considered going back to Chicago for any new tattoos, even though I live in New Jersey, because I trust and like them so much. Better atmosphere, talent, and prices than ANYTHING I have ever seen in NJ/NYC. I found Goodkind Tattoo because I was housesitting for my sister down the street from the shop. I knew I wanted to get a 2nd tattoo but had no idea how to find a good place. Luckily, Goodkind was already building a great reputation on Yelp and I decided to check out the shop. Rob and his assistant were so nice, they answered my questions and since I had come in with a few ideas, Rob talked with me and gave me his input. The day before my appointment he even called me to discuss the design again in a constructive way (he was not being pushy or trying to get me to change my mind at all, so no one get the wrong idea!!) and I really appreciated his feedback. The end result was breathtaking and every part of the process incredible. The after care instructions I got also seemed to speed the healing process. I fully endorse the anti-microbial soap and tattoo lotion they sell there. Also, since then I have gone back to Chicago to see my sister and stopped in to say hi at Goodkind. Im new to Good Kind but I followed my tattoo artist, Kelly Severston, from Insight Studios. The shop is beautiful and everyone I came in contact with was really nice and welcoming. Kelly has been my artist for 4 years. He is very responsive. He usually gets back to me within a few hours. His work is amazing. He does very clean line work and crazy good color work which is what attracted me to his art in the first place. He did my Doctor Who half sleeve which I absolutely love and my Godzilla half sleeve too. I love both pieces. Again, the color work is just amazing! He's really great at interpreting what you want and turning the design into something creative and fun. The best part of getting tattooed by Kelly is that he's a sweetheart and a huge nerd. I'm going to preface this review by saying that it took a lot of time to decide which tattoo shop I wanted to go to for my first tattoo. I looked into almost every shop in the Western suburbs and at least half of the ones in the city. I wasn't prepared to accept anything less than excellence for a piece that was extremely important to me. I called Rob-- the artist-- on a Wednesday to ask if there was any chance I could get an appointment in for the next day. He was friendly and helpful and we talked about what exactly I wanted. I offered to email him a picture of what I wanted and in return he agreed to call me back in about ten minutes after he had looked over the design. He was true to his word and we discussed pricing and deposite information before settling on an appointment time the next day. He also offered to text me a picture of what he had drawn up if he got it done early. He didn't get it done early enough to text me, but I appreciated the offer in any case. So that brings me to the day of the appointment. The shop is easy to find in a very nice neighborhood. My friend and I arrived early, and I was able to grab a snack at a cute little pastry shop a little ways down the street to calm my nerves a bit. I was greeted as soon as I entered the shop and Rob immediately guessed that I was his 4:00 appointment. He said he was going to run to his desk and grab the drawing and my friend and I could have a seat while we waited. The shop is small, but brightly colored and nicely decorated, as well as extremely clean looking. Murals covered a few of the walls and his own artwork covered the rest of the decorations. There were several portfolios of his own artwork as well as books about tattooing and design on a table across from the seating area. When he showed me the drawing, it was PERFECT. Not exactly what I had shown him, but modified in such a way that it made the perfect tattoo. The artwork was of an extremely high quality and it was pretty much everything I was looking for. We talked about placement and he had my friend and I wait for a few minutes so that he could transfer the drawing onto tracing paper and grab a smoke before we started. It took probably 20 minutes before I sat down in the small section of the shop where he actually did the tattoo. It was absolutely immaculate. I know some information about how to keep such an area sanitary and safe, and I could tell he went above and beyond all minimum requirements. During the time I was getting my tattoo, he was pretty quiet. If I or my friend said something, he would have input, but he didn't start too many conversations himself. Personally, that's my preference. He's definitely a nice guy and fun to talk to, I'm just quiet by nature. When I saw my piece it was fantastic. Exactly the size and location that I wanted it, and perfectly done down to the last detail. I couldn't be happier with my finished product. He is a true artist and I couldn't recommend him more highly. After everything was over, he talked about everything you could possibly need to know about tattoo aftercare and offered me a name brand tattoo lotion and soap for a pretty low price. I figured I was better safe than sorry. So, all in all, though I don't have much to compare it to, I'm fairly confident that Goodkind Tattoo is one of the best shops in the city, even though it's on the newer side. I was recommended Carolina by a previous artist who I had gotten work from, and I'm really glad she did so. Carolina was easy to get a hold of and make an appointment with. I emailed her a few reference pics and told her what I was imagining. She told me when I could stop by the shop for a consultation, which was pretty soon after emailing her. I stopped by so she could get an idea of the size and placement, and I set my appointment. However, just a few hours after setting the appointment, I realized I'd forgotten about a prior engagement for the same day and had to reschedule. Carolina was super understanding and booked me for later that month. Fast forward to the day of the tattoo, and things went as planned. She had an appointment that ran a little longer than expected, but she let me know well before my scheduled time by giving me a call, so there was no inconvenience at all. Very professional and what you'd expect. Once I got to the shop, Carolina and the other artists were very friendly just like when I came by for my consultation. She showed me two versions of what she came up with and asked about a couple of small details. Once I decided on a version and confirmed the details, she quickly finished up my stencil. After that, she got her station ready pretty fast, and everything was clean and organized. During the actual tattooing, she was extremely personable and fun to talk to. My girlfriend and I enjoyed chatting with her the entire time. Carolina worked at a good pace even while we talked to her the whole time. After she was done, I was very satisfied with the finished product. It's been a month and some change since the tattoo, and it's healed up nicely. She used Tegaderm to wrap the tattoo. It was my 3rd time having that used, and I really enjoy it for the first few days of having fresh work. I would definitely recommend Carolina if you're looking for someone in Chicago. read more

I didn't expect that she would have time to help me, but she replied me right away. I showed her the draft, she told me that for the size of my tattoo, she had to simplify some lines. I told her I really liked the original design, and discussed how I wanted it to look like. She didn't get offended. She's really patient and fun. She's a real artist. Goodkind Tattoo is awesome! I was looking to get my first tattoo which was to be a memorial tattoo for my grandmother who just passed away. I shopped around to other area tattoo shops but all of the artists were cold and did not give me any artistic input. They basically wanted to tattoo me with something that had already been done. When I visited Goodkind, this was NOT the case. Rob came out and introduced himself, shook my hand and listened to what I wanted to have done. I initially was set on having a picture my grandma and I holding hands (just the hands part). He tastefully told me "while this is a beautiful picture, anytime someone tattoos a picture of hands, the thumb ends up looking like a dick." I definitely did not want this. We began talking and I showed him a medallion my grandmother always wore. He then grabbed a piece of paper and a pen and began sketching this beautiful design. He saw exactly what I wanted and listened. He hit every aspect I wanted to portray in my tattoo to honor my grandmother and I love it! He also helped me avoid certain embarrassment by having a penis like look on my arm that I would forever have. Rob is a true artist and professional. He made sure to talk me through over an over again as to what I needed to do to be sure it heals properly and that I don't get infected. He also runs a very clean shop and ensures that you are comfortable all the time. The price was very very reasonable too. I would definitley recommend Goodkind Tattoo to anyone over and over again. Nhia is the absolute worst! Don't make the mistake I did and think since her portfolio is good, she's worth the trouble - she's not! All you get with her is last minute cancellations (if she's in the mood to let you know - one time she even no-showed on me). When she did show, she was always late (30min+). She is nice until you call her on her unprofessional attitude. Like many other of her clients, I have an unfinished tattoo that I came in to Goodkind TWICE for appts to finish it, and she canceled on me via text while I was waiting for her at the shop. Goodkind is a clean, solid shop, but if this kind of behaviour is acceptable here, it makes me wonder what other professional standards they are letting slide. read more

He is always willing to work meticulously with you on the artwork you want and is fun to talk to while you're sitting for hours. Let's go! I have no problem with the place, I have huge issues with one artist, his name is Kelly Severtson. I followed him from insight studios on Milwaukee Ave, he did my sleeve, I was very happy with his work, all nice except one fact...he would take time to reply or schedule new appt until he stopped answering my emails. I sent him over dozen emails without any kind of reply, there is a lot of artists out there, I cannot explain why he would not me as a customer, he been working with me for over 2 1/2 years, I'm very disappointed in Kelly. Carolina is AMAZING. My comment is biased based on the fact that she was available for walk-ins the same day I called but regardless, she was super friendly on the phone and in person. I called Chicago Tattoo & Piercing Co. and the woman who answered just didn't give off a good vibe - she couldn't give me a price estimate as there were "too many variables." As true as that is, ours was simple and she didn't give me the opportunity to explain it. When I called Carolina, she gave me the opportunity to get a price estimate and that alone made me want to go there. She drew up our tattoo there and it came out super awesome. I have 6 tattoos that I have received from 6 different artists in 6 different cities. Prior to deciding on this place I had looked at his website. I liked what he did with color and with flowers and because the tattoo I had in mind was going to be very vibrant and leafy, I decided to go by and check him out. First thing I noticed is there are no tattoo designs on the wall, only the owners framed art. I liked this very much. To me, it makes a statement about the integrity of his art. Second thing I noticed is the owners welcoming demeanor. He's not 'that creepy tattoo guy'. He made me feel comfortable to talk about what I wanted and has a way of giving his opinion and still letting you feel like your decision is the best decision. Later, as I was getting work done, I was able to witness how he treated others who walked in and it was exactly the same. Well, other than the jerk who seemed very upset that they do not do piercing in this shop. Which again brings be back to the integrity of his art. All in all I am very impressed. This kid is OCD clean freak. By far the cleanest I have gone to. Not that my other tatts were done in back alleys or anything. They were all done professionally its just that this guy was noticeably cleaner. As of now, I only have an outline. I am looking forward to completing it but I have a feeling it will end up an ongoing project for a while. I love what he has done so far and I am pretty sure that this will be my last and largest tattoo. I really went with my gut since he is 'the new kid' and he doesn't have any reviews or anything.
