So glad I finally got to try Goodkind! Made a reservation for Sunday night - they're open until 10 which is nice especially as a lot of other restaurants in the area seem to close earlier. There were a couple of open tables when we showed up at 8, but knowing ahead of time we wouldn't have to wait was nice. There is also plenty of street parking around. We ordered the seaweed chips, 2 small plates (shrimp and a mushroom tartine), and 1 large plate (the lavender/anchovy rubbed leg of lamb), and it was more than enough food for 2 people. My favorite was the mushroom tartine, mostly for the sourdough. Would recommend anything that comes with the sourdough! Everything we ordered was pretty good overall, although the lavender flavor on the lamb was a bit too strong for our preference. We finished off our meal with the mini gateau basque which was delicious and light. Overall a nice spot for a date night or to take out of towners to with its intimate/cozy but still casual vibe. read more

Words cannot accurately describe the taste experience at Goodkind. After many years of it being on me "must try" list, my partner and I finally made our way to eating there one evening sans reservation. On arrival, we learned you must make a reservation on the day we were there for a table, but we could sit at the bar or outside. We opted for the beautiful traditional wood bar and ordered some drinks. The bar seating was more than adequate for us - and we had a front row seat to the tenders mixing cocktails AND free reign to oogle other diner's food as they were delivered. We landed on sharing everything - champagne battered mushrooms, empanadas (hand pies), a chickpea entre (I wish I remembered what it was called), and dessert. This past weekend I went and tried a new (to me) entry that was like a breakfast hot dish slash biscuits-and-gravy but on tater tots instead of biscuits. Man it was good! We received a gift certificate for Goodkind and finally decided to use it. After viewing the menu for a while, my wife decided on the 1/2 Rotisserie Chicken and I chose the GK Burger. We had never been to this establishment so we were a little hesitant to order the food for carryout. Upon arrival at Goodkind, The staff was very courteous and knowledgeable. I brought the food home and the 1/2 Amish Rotisserie Chicken was still warm, flavorful and the vegetables that came with it were great. However, the GK Burger on the other hand was room temperature warm at best, the bun was greasy, the "Aged Beef Patty" had no flavor whatsoever and all I COULD taste was the garnishes that were on the burger. We had a first visit up here with the son and his friend, and had dinner in this cozy and historic neighborhood of Bay View. Apparently this community is listed in the National Register of Historic Places, and from our experience, Goodkind looks exemplary of the quaint and high quality restaurants in the area. The small restaurant space and bar is housed in a charming and colorful historic house on a corner in a residential area. The food and drink choices are excellent and it looks to be one of those places where you can't go wrong with anything here. Their menu changes every day also. Our party of four split these three delightful appetizers, and which comprised their whole selection of "bites": - seaweed chips - fried chickpeas - chicken liver mousse The mains that we tried were: - jerk roasted pork shoulder with side of Parmesan polenta (my dish) - Alaskan halibut (wife had this) - lavender and anchovy rubbed leg of lamb - braised rabbit leg with side of cream sherry mushrooms My pork shoulder was very nice - a fatty and generous serving and similar to Chinese char siu. The polenta was a bit creamy-soup-like but nonetheless delicious. I also had a delectable local beer - a Central Waters Rift IPA (6.5% ABV), and they have a pretty nice draft beer list as well as a varied wine list. The space is tight and we were lucky to grab the last table - a high top table next to the busy and vibrant bar as well as the the open kitchen view. Staff was friendly and attentive and for whatever reason virtually everyone was female and it sort of made me think of the Netflix series Godless! I went here with my family. The service was amazing, and the waitress was attentive while not being overbearing. The atmosphere of the restaurant is lovely -- gorgeous bar and booths which feels comfortable and nice but not pretentious or too fancy. We got the shrimp scampi, the crab pasta, the lentil dish, and the risotto with peas. All the dishes were amazing, but the risotto was my favorite. Since my first time at Goodkind I have been back a few more times. This meat cheek donut with raspberry chocolate sauce literally blew my mind! That was for brunch. This place is always a solid choice. I even really loved the bloody Mary I had for brunch the only thing there wasn't any garnish of any kind. But the drink itself was very good. Which, is my problem with a lot of the "so called" great Bloody Mary places in Milwaukee, they put too much garnish and the drink itself I often cannot even drink. I have wanted to eat here since moving to Milwaukee three years ago. It has taken me so long because this place is always crazy, insanely busy. Now I know why! The food and cocktails are divine. Artistic combinations that you will not find elsewhere and excellent portions for sharing with a few or many. I ordered the puffball schnitzel (listed under "large plates"). I had no idea what to expect but having never seen such an item on a menu before, how could I resist? They knocked it out of the park. Excellent presentation (insert a #chefskiss here). The beer battered fries came with a great dipping sauce - a tahini poblano concoction that I would buy in bulk. The only dish that lacked a bit was the plum tart. Would have been better with a sweeter side - like straight up vanilla ice cream. The prices are reasonable, and the service fantastic. Laidback but on top of their game. The place is also tiny. We called ahead to reserve a table around 7pm on a Monday and had no problem getting something reserved immediately. Monday evening seems to be a nice time to get a table here. A cold, October Monday ;) The vibe comes off as eclectic, hipster. The crowd is younger. There is a large bar in the center space, green plants, some taxidermy and two gender neutral bathrooms. It is the sort of place you would expect to see and experience in Bay View where the culinary scene is vibrant and more off the beaten path. We visited Goodkind last night for a late night date night without a reservation so we were happy to see plenty of room at the bar. The bartender was friendly and knowledgeable about the food and drink menu and provided great service. The ambiance is really chill, dark and cozy, just casual environment with really good food. We started with 2 apps - the crispy brussel sprouts and the champagne battered oyster mushrooms which were both delicious. For our entree we shared the crab pasta which my husband really loved. We also got a side of fries and the sauce that came with was super good. For drinks my husband had a cocktail that was delicious and I had a sour beer that was on tap. Goodkind is a very cozy bar and restaurant! I am so happy to live so close to it. This is honestly one of my favorite places in Milwaukee to grab a drink. Call it a Night is my favorite, it is their version of a Manhattan. It's awesome and strong, and you will probably call it a night afterwards. If not, and you are hardcore, give the other drinks a try as well. The bartenders are amazing at making unique drinks. I have been here a few times for dinner late at night. The menu changes once in a while based on the fresh food that is available. The food has been good, but not always consistent. I really have enjoyed the scallops and the pasta dishes. Brunch or dinner - Goodkind is a delight! As vegetarians, my husband and I don't consider this a restaurant with endless options for us. However, the options they do have are wonderful and never fail to impress. We especially love coming here with family and friends that do enjoy meat entrees, as we recognize they have a lot to offer in that department. And the brunch has a couple of solid options - the aebelskiver pancakes as a starter and the whipped tofu as a main - that we keep coming back for. One of the other reasons we love our dining experiences is the ambiance. The space has a comfortable and cozy feel while feeling unique and intriguing. The wallpaper on the back wall of the space is gorgeous and there are numerous other charming details - the hanging lamps, the bar itself, the live plants all around. And of course, the cocktail menu has to be mentioned. Thy have inventive drink options that seem to change from time to time. I've never been disappointed. Everything here is so delicious and so good!! Driving by the place I would not have thought it was a restaurant. I finally made my way here after hearing so many rave reviews. The food here was phenomenal. Everything tasted so fresh. At the time when I went, our table got the risotto with burrata cheese, calamari, and an order of the dunbarton ceddar-blue cheese. We shared everything between the 3 of us, and it was a perfect amount of food! The place was busy, which is expected on a Friday night. The service here is pretty quick considering how busy they are. My water glass was always full, which is a huge plus. The parking here can be a little bit of a headache on a Friday night, but I was able to find something a couple blocks down. I love love this restaurant. Everything about it is perfection. The inside is so cool and comfortable to be in. From the light fixtures to the wallpaper, fantastic. The wait staff and bartenders are wonderful, knowledgeable and attentive. The menus is exciting! It changes often so you may be pleasantly surprised when there's something new you want to try. I've had the mussels multiple times and although not the same, always amazing. The spicy crab pasta is super yummy! Our friends fought over the carbonara, they said it was so good. Top notch cocktails, using higher end whiskey like blaum brothers old fangled bitter and some great rare beer finds on tap including Maplewood and Barrel Aged Ten Fidy. The Shaved brussel sprout salad had great texture from the candied nuts to the crisp apples, brussels and crispy blue cheese croutons that all came together for a complex but delightful layering of flavors. The spicy crab pasta is a must, with fresh chunks of lump crab, crispy pancetta bits and fresh pasta. Even or soup had a delightful depth of flavor that warmed your soul (which we call all use in January in WI), courtesy of the bone marrow dumplings, yum! Best brunch spot in Milwaukee. It's on the smaller side so it's best to make a reservation but you can normally slide in at the bar if it's just two people. Cocktails are the priciest part of this brunch but they are worth it. Bloody Mary's are simply garnished with a celery stick and of course, in true Milwaukee fashion, it comes with a High Life shorty. One of my personal favs is the Earl of Bonneville- a gin drink with grapefruit, orange liqueur, butters and rosemary. A stiff drink that you don't even feel the slightest bit bad about ordering for brunch. The menu is ever changing based on season and farm fresh options. Even the staple dishes have slight changes, which make it fun. You seriously cannot go wrong wrong when ordering because everything is amazing. However the Polenta Madame and the chicken sandwich (if it's on the menu) are top notch. I dream about them. Dinner is also amazing! Dishes are obviously a little more costly but definitely worth it. The meals are portioned perfectly. You won't go home feeling like you want to die and the flavors will make the price easy to swallow. I always order the scallops. The dish has changed every time I order it and somehow it continues to get better, which I didn't think was possible. Order some wine off of their extensive list! From the time I sat down and was handed a negroni (spelled "nogroni" here) I really liked Goodkind. Tucked away a residential neighborhood between Kinnickinnic and the lake (take Russell east, Wentworth north and you're there) the restaurant sits in what looks like a cute little house, done up in art deco, a little bit bric-a-brac style. Windows with little house plants growing in them rounded out the earthy decor. The menu was a mix of different flavors - not huge but with something for all tastes. our server explained price would dictate portion size, and also that their rotisserie items were their forte. (The chicken and lamb sounded excellent and I'm a little wistful I didn't order them.) I had the crab pasta which came with some very spicy and good homemade tasting pepperoni. Also I had the chicken liver mousse which, if you are ok with liverwurst, (I loved it as a kid) is very good too. The stars of the show (imo) were really the craft cocktails. They had an extensive list with homemade bitters and syrups, beautiful presentation ("mandrake" came complete with a flower), lots of creative names and innovative twists on well known drinks. Our service was great especially considering how busy it was (get reservations even on a week night.) I know you're gonna want to get a cocktail here and that's fine but Goodkind has a Szechuan ginger beer that is out of this world. If you like ginger and a good punch in the throat, GET THIS. They brew it in-house and I wish I could drink this every day. Their food is also fantastic! The menu changes up somewhat for seasonal availability but I think they always have some sort of rotisserie thing going on and veggies cooked in those juices. Super good. I recommend the champagne battered bee mushrooms. I have had it twice and liked it more when they put a lot of the vinegary, slaw type stuff on top because otherwise the fried mushrooms aren't overly flavorful. I also enjoyed the spicy crab pasta that was shared among a group. I haven't been too excited about their desserts but it's okay because usually I was too stuffed with great food already to go for that. There are warm colors, potted plants. It's the same vibe I'd love to have in my home. Bonus points for two nice, gender free restrooms. A nice public potty is always a great find. Seriously, true story. Customer service here is usually very good. Personable, friendly, conversational at the bar. Once recently I had an experience of less than stellar customer service which is unusual here and has never happened for me here before this time. It's my belief that no one person or business is perfect and we're all bound to make mistakes from time to time. The hallmark of good customer service isn't the absence of imperfection but rather the way that a business receives to and responds to the customer feedback of a poor experience. Recently, I sent Goodkind an email providing feedback about a less than stellar experience. I received a prompt, humble and kind reply that invited me back and offered a complimentary beverage and dessert. Thank you Goodkind for being kind and good. See what I did there? Ohh, yes. Talked about a hip and trendy spot in Bay View (is there any other kind?) Goodkind is an adorable (I call it adorable also because it's kinda small) rustic spot with great food and even better adult beverages. The bar takes up a decent portion of the space in the middle and on a Friday night there were definitely standing room for people attempting to wait for tables. It is also a little bit noisy, only because there are so many people trying to get in the doors. Rustic, farm-to-table style menu and I first saw the restaurant when it was featured on an episode of Wisconsin Foodie on MPT. It immediately made me want to try the place out. Good service, even with it being so busy and we didn't have to wait too long for our entries. We both got adult beverages of the list (great drinks!) we shared an appetizer (Chicken Liver Mousse which my date really liked a lot) while he got the mussels (said they were good, but not the best he's ever had) and I got the Spicy Crab Pasta and really liked the noodles which you could tell were made in house. I would definitely go back again for the fun atmosphere, great cocktails and trying new items that might pop up on the menu. read more

This was our third visit, and again, GK didn't disappoint. Our favorite waitress Marisa wasn't there today, but we still got great service. I love the great variety of flavors in their dishes and that the menu changes seasonally. They usually have a few dishes with fresh mushrooms in them, and those never disappoint. This time, we got a dish that was beet-based. My husband hates beets, and got it for me, but he LOVED it. This is a miracle! If they can make my hubby like beets, they are just hands down amazing. I've visited Goodkind several times for dinner over the past 6-8 months, trying dishes such as the Monday Night Prime Rib special or the Tuesday Night Burger special (which changes weekly), and I even made a special trip in to try Goodkind's take on Serbian Burek. All of the dishes have ranged from good to great, and each visit seems to have been better than the prior. While I've loved the burgers I've had recently, including the Juicy Lucy last week, I need to get back and try more small plates and entrees that make up the heart of Goodkind's menu, such as the Seaweed Chips that I was avoiding because I'm not a big fan of nori (seaweed). Last week I decided to try them after reading about how they were one of the top food items in Milwaukee that foodies should try. While I don't consider myself a foodie, but merely an aspiring foodie, I thought I'd give them a go. Guess what? They were freakin' awesome! Sheets of nori are imported from Thailand, fried, coated with the same batter they use for their calamari, and cut into chips, then served over a delicious red pepper jelly! I might have to order them any time I see them on the menu. Seriously, they are awesome! I have to do better to try more of the menu, which does change fairly often, but I owe it to myself to try. BTW, the beer and cocktail list is still super solid if that is more important to you than the food. read more

Charm inside and out at the place. The exterior of the building is beautiful and the inside is so cozy. I love that they rotate their menu seasonally and hate it. Why? Because the brussel sprouts salad was amazing. The right amount was of sweetness, crunch, and zing. I loved the honey crisp apples and garlic dressing concoction. In addition to the salad, we ordered the mushrooms which were fried and delicious, something that came with bread, cheese, olives and my memory is failing me but it was good! The chicken and duck confit croquettes were good! If it isn't obvious, the Brussels sprout salad was the star of the show for me. I know they are known for their craft cocktails but their craft beer menu is fantastic and so different! Goodkind is a great local Milwaukee option for any meal. The people there are nice, accommodating, and helpful. I'm a celiac and they go out of their way to make sure I can order almost anything on the menu which is nice of them. The space is nice, a little small so make sure you plan a head or are prepared to wait at the bar. In general it's cozy and laidback, so even if on a date don't feel like you need to get too dressy (but do get dressy if you want!). They have outdoor seating in the summer. I've been there with one other person or in a group as large as 6 and it's worked out. Some nights they have specials on wine. Their small plates, wine selections, and brunch are all amazing! We wanted to go out for a Friday dinner and decided to try a new place (for us). We like small plate places, so Goodkind it was! My wife made reservations but for some reason we arrived early. We decided to go in and ask if they would be able to seat us early. No problem!! We were seated in this cozy warm dining room at a small two person table which made it kinda romantic! We started off with the the creamy parmesan polenta (it is no longer on the menu) and the crispy brussel sprout salad. The polenta was absolutely some of the creamiest and best I have ever had. The brussel sprout salad was in a class of it own, I would love to have that recipe! Having being raised by an Australian mother I grew up on leg of lamb. Seeing the Lavender & Anchovy rubbed rotisserie leg of lamb, I was sold. My wife doesn't care too much for lamb but said that she was happy with the two small plates.. the lamb came! It was Just a plate with big chunks medium to medium-rare of fresh cut lamb off of the spit. I fell in love on sight. The best way I think I can describe the quality and flavor of the lamb is, that for somebody who doesn't really like lamb my wife gave me a run for my money eating this fantastic meal! P.S. My husband and I came here for the first time for a Saturday night date night. I called on the same day to make reservations and was told 8:30pm was the earliest time available. The hostess was very helpful and told me that we could probably be seated at the bar within 30 minutes of arrival without a reservation. We decided to wing it and arrived at 6:15pm and were seated immediately at the bar. What followed was one of the top 5 best meals we have ever had in any city. Cocktails - friendly bartenders serving fabulous hand mixed cocktails. My husband had their award winning Manhattan. First course - the Brussel sprout salad is unique and phenomenally delicious. My husband enjoyed some East Coast oysters. Main course - we ordered rotisserie, pork shoulder and lamb. The flavors were incredible, herb crust was crispy and prepared perfectly. Sides - beets and roasted vegetables. I could have eaten a whole plate of sides for my meal. Dessert/coffee - parsnip cake (a riff on carrot cake) was a seasonal special. Golden raisins, cream cheese frosting... yum. Decaf coffee was excellent. Reasons for making our top 5 best meals of all time: simple food executed perfectly, fabulous service, great ambience, delicious hand crafted cocktails, cool neighborhood location.
