It's within an older converted house off of T Street very close to downtown Sacramento. Once inside, the bibliophile can browse amongst an amazing assortment of local California gold rush history, pamphlets, epherama, broadsides, poetry, and many things related to books about books, history of printing, and the mind of man. Barry has been doing this for many years now and has a vast knowledge of his stock contained here and can also make many great recommendations on other books to explore whether your interests are local history, printing, the Donner Party or even California literature. I highly recommend a visit to Barry Cassidy Rare Books, it is a unique shop with quality and rare books with an engaging owner.

The team here is so friendly and the space itself is inviting and in the perfect area. They have a parking lot which is already a plus, but if they're having a special event and the lot is full you can easily find parking on the street. It's located in a neighborhood and surrounded by cute homes, is close to the park, and is walking distance from other stores and restaurants. We've come here for some of their pop-ups and then walked around the neighborhood with our dog before heading back over for a fun day out. I love that they support other local businesses by providing a space to sell their items, bring their pop-up businesses, and offer classes to the community. They have themed events throughout the year which adds extra fun, and while they don't have food the events often have a food truck or other pop up vendors. When I need a gift this is a great spot to stop, there's always a variety of cute items and they carry some of my favorite local candles. The prices vary by items and brand, but they're well worth it to support the local brands and the quality is always great.

And I was more than happy to participate in all of that:). Unique works of art can be soooo expensive. Why not browse the museum store for those reasonable knock-offs. Yes, I am being silly. Or maybe not! However, there is nothing funny about the uber, great items located right inside this store! The selection is seriously extensive. In my somewhat quick walk-a-round I spied books of all types, beautiful jewelry and art objects made by regional and independent artists, the usual gift store suspects (coffee cups, calendars, key chains, greeting cards, magnets) but of an elevated quality. My GF purchased a painting for her daughter which was simply charming. I did find an elegant scarf I was contemplating but time ran out and we were off to the Museum. Next time! The Museum Store is open to anyone whether or not you are purchasing tickets to the Museum. That is a nice feature. You can literally park outside and come in to do some leisurely shopping. You never know when you will find that perfect item for yourself. This would also be a wonderful place to do some gift shopping for that special someone. Too busy to tour the museum for that exhibit you always wanted to see? Not to worry. The Museum Store has the corresponding exhibition books available just for your reading pleasure. Do something nice for yourself and a local artist! Hit up the Crocker Art Museum Shop and do some looking. It is definitely in my future shopping plans.

Why would I, a restless soul, be standing/sitting in the museum lobby, waiting for a while for the tour to start? Instead I headed to the gift shop to browse and shop. If I had little more cash in my "purse" (cross body bag), I would have bought a few more items. I forgot to bring my steno pad to take notes on the history of the museum and its artifacts. The purpose of taking notes is to describe my experience at this museum in preparing a review. After browsing, I found a Crocker note pad. It was perfect for taking notes and it was small enough to carry in my cross body bag. I also love collecting magnets. The gift shop has a decent collection of magnets, books for all ages, plush animals, boxes of greeting cards, colored pencils in different sizes, scarves, etc. One magnet in my hand along with the note pad - what else do I want to buy? The coffee mugs look appealing. I have to pass the mugs up, as I have plenty of those at home. (So many choices, but so little cash. I did not want to pull out my "plastic" and say charge it.) However, my final item was a children's book titled Hats of Faith. Return visit? Yes, to the museum and the gift shop. Also, it would be an opportunity to have lunch at their cafe. I don't drive anymore, but there is always Amtrak and I believe that train station is about 8 to 9 blocks to the museum. Then, it doesn't hurt to ask what bus will get me to the museum.

As others have mentioned, the selection has some gaps, but I imagine you could easily order a book you want that isn't in stock. I enjoyed browsing the shelves and seeing employee recommendations. When I made it to the poetry selection, I was happy to see that it wasn't all mainstream or classic poets, and I ended up picking up a few new collections. There's an extensive children's and young adult section in the back, and the store also sells things like book-related jewelry, some cards, and a ton of cute stickers (I may have gone overboard on buying some of those). They also sell local zines, which I think is awesome. If you make a zine, you can contact them to see about selling them in the store. The front table has free bookmarks, handouts, community announcements, etc., and the person at the register let me put some of my zines on the table for people to take for free. All in all, a cute spot, and one I'd visit regularly if I lived in town.
