Mixed Bag is such a fun gift store in Midtown. It's one of the rare spots that has its own parking lot and they always have a great mixture of consistent merchandise and seasonal items. They have a whole wall of cards and supplies for gifts/wrapping, a kids area with lots of little toys, stuffed animals and novelty items, home goods, sauces, decorations, and a lot more. The staff is very welcoming as well, they even welcomed our dog in since he's well behaved. You can find some great items and they're typically priced right around what you'd find them at elsewhere. What a cute store! They truly are a mixed bag with something for everyone. Great sales and decent prices despite being in midtown. They have their own parking lot so you want have to stress about that. They charge $0.50 for card transactions under $10.00, but that's reasonable compared to other vendors/stores. read more

I can't remember what originally brought me into this store, but, at some point, it became a favorite spot for my daughter and I to stop by whenever we're in the area. The name really says it all: this store is a 'mixed bag' of cards, gifts, artisanal foods, jewelry, garden decor, umbrellas, wallets, purses, scarves, books, ornaments, seasonal items, and more. When my daughter was little, they used to always have a little bowl of nonpareils on the front counter, with bags nearby for purchase. The pandemic seems to have changed this practice, but they still have candies, jams, and Fiesta dishes for sale. Personally, I love all of the miniature decorations, especially the $3 glass animals, of which I own several. I also love the funny magnets. Every time I've stopped by, the owners/employees have all always been very friendly, welcoming, and helpful. The store also has its own parking lot, with free parking, which is uncommon for this neighborhood. Overall, this is a good gift shop, and I highly recommend it to anyone who is looking for a cute, quick, and easy gift. read more

I love supporting small business and love the fact this store actually has so many things I want to buy for myself and as gifts. Definitely racist. Went in looking for Jellycats, they had a good selection. But we were being watched the whole time we were in the shop and just us it seemed. My friend paid with cash and I paid with card. The man helping me seemed to take a minute to look at my card, then asked me for an ID. I don't own one so I asked him if a school ID would work. I purchased a single stuffed animal and have never been asked for my ID before. If you are POC do not bother shopping here. read more

I had never heard of this unique shop before, until Joe K asked me if I wanted to check it out to kill some time before heading over to a nearby restaurant. When you come across a store that has a little bit of everything, well, that's my kind of place! Eclectic businesses like this are so much fun to explore! It is a combination of gift ideas, toys, collectibles, gadgets, knik knacks, jewelry, household "must haves" and decorative art pieces. There is so much to see from top to bottom, aisle after aisle. I could have easily started impulse buying if we weren't pressed for time to make it to our dinner reservations. Joe K did make a small purchase on a back scratcher that he wanted to use as a miniature garden rake. Something he has been searching for, for some time now. At least it has multiple uses! LOL! Just like life being a mixed bag, the store Mixed Bag, is filled with fun and exciting items. I adore this store! They have everything!! I have found some of the most amazing, unique, and cool gifts here. Its like paradise in one location. The store is well organized, and packed to the gills with goodies galore. The kitchen section has gadgets that even the newest chef in your life would find to be a great addition to their current home selection. The kids section has some of the neatest kids games and gifts. I love the wooden puzzles! Who wants a slinky??? ME! Who wants origami paper and books? ME! The general section features some of the latest fad items, and some great gag type gifts too. This is really THE place to go for that hard to shop for person, for that special birthday gift, for holiday gifts... or just anytime gifts. I arrived at this store to get some games to play when my daughter comes home from college in a few weeks. While we were parking, two older ladies kept looking at my wife and I. We were have a conversation in the car and they keep looking. We got out the car go in the store and someone immediately was following us around and it felt very weird. I made my wife aware and she said let's go. So we did. Well walking back to our car the two older ladies immediately say you can't park here. I really had never noticed this store before since it's offset from the street, but some of the recent Christmas paraphernalia I could see in their entrance enticed me this week. So glad I stopped in! This is the. place. for stocking stuffers. Seriously. Anyone you might need a small gift for can be purchased here. There are lots of ideas for housewarming gifts, as well. There's one nook full of baby and toddler things and a back corner for cards, including a lot of holiday card box sets. Prices didn't wow me, but I love supporting local businesses. This little place has such a big parking lot and I thought there might actually be some cool stuff in there, I was mostly thinking I could find a nice gift for my mom but it's just one of those old white peoples knickknack shops. There was some cute children's toys, so I ended up picking up some thing for my nephew. I went to pay with my debit card, mind you it came out like $15, she kind of rude and then asked for my ID. I have absolutely never had someone check my ID for a purchase especially not one that was $15. Anyways I typed in my pin wrong and my card was the Declined but she sounded kind a happy about it it was weird. I realized I had enough cash so I gave it to her and ran. Every inch and corner of this store contains so many unique, cute, funny, one of a kind items. There is quite a selection to choose from and perfect for gift shopping (weddings, birthdays, baby showers, father/mother's day). The best part was the super friendly staff here. I invited my friends along in this shopping adventure to this store, the staff warmly greeted us, offered us yummy food/drink samples, and so super accommodating to each of us. I want to start by saying I have never written a bad review for a business before, but this incident was just so ridiculous I felt compelled to write one. I've frequented this shop for 20 years, and enjoy supporting a Sacramento small business. On some weekends my daughter and I go to Mixed Bag for a piece of candy or small toy, while my husband goes next door to the bike shop. Today while getting out of the car, a worker loudly shouted from the front of the store, "this parking is for customers only!" My husband, quite confused, said "we are customers." She then yelled back "we aren't open yet, so you can't park here." We then said "we can't wait until you open?" The parking lot was completely empty so we weren't taking any spots away from the workers. She said "this is for customers, so no." She and the other worker then glared at us from the front of the store until we pulled away. We let them know we were disappointed in this behavior and wouldn't be coming back. They just rolled their eyes and laughed. Never have I seen such rude and confusing behavior. Definitely won't be going back. read more

Mixed Bag is the kind of place you come, especially during the holidays, when you want something unique and different but have absolutely no idea what. Every square foot of the store is crammed with small, unique gifts, from soap to children's toys to cards to gag gifts to aprons to wine openers to books to flags to gadgets that will supposedly make your life easier. Not all of it is quality, so think of this more as a place to buy something fun and different for the person who has everything. I was walking by and decided to pop in as a time killer. I spent over 30 minutes shopping and left with toenail clippers (yes, you read that correctly) and a toy San Francisco Giants train for my son. Two things I never knew anyone I know needed. Instead of shopping with a mission, let this store inspire you. The staff is friendly and works hard with a constant line during the holidays. First time we have been to the Mixed Bag, but it won't be our last. Very cool store full of the coolest gifts and fun stuff. Maybe not as great an assortment of things as Evangeline's in Old Sacramento, but still a well stocked store. Lots of people shopping yesterday too. I was really crowded! Long line to check out too. That was the main reason we didn't buy anything. Next time we will go on a weekday and maybe it won't be packed with people. I feel like I've been a customer for over 15 yrs now. This was my go to place to get unique heartfelt gifts. My loved ones would always get a greeting card from this store. In December I went to get some holiday gifts. I was 3rd in line. The cashier was pleasant as always and rang up the first customer and then the second customer, but when she got to me, she was very quiet and then when I gave her my Golden 1 debit card (which is a local Sacramento bank and which customer #2 had just used), she asked me for my ID. I pulled it out and then I asked her why she didnt ask the other customers in front of me for an ID. She very bitterley said she didnt need to. I thought to myself, ok they have the legal right to refuse service or give bad service. But honestly the only difference between me and the other two customers was my skin color. RACIST, RUDE PEOPLE WORK HERE!! If I could give the store zero stars I would. Apparently the people that work there I assume are the owners and are very very rude. My sister and I both love to shop & spend money. We were out celebrating my sisters birthday & stopped to check it out. Nobody greeted us but I didn't let that phase me. We looked around a bit & I tried to be friendly & make small talk with the male gray haired man who was cleaning the shelves & he was so rude! At that point I had a few items (which are overpriced btw) and I put them back & told my sister that we were leaving. She insisted on buying something even after the lady at the counter was rude to her. I went outside before I stooped to their level & said something rude. We will never step foot in there again! DONT SHOP HERE UNLESS YOU DONT CARE HOW OTHER PEOPLE ARE TREATED! Most business owners use YELP to improve their service etc but apparently these people don't care! read more

Donna, Donna, Donna!!!! Donna was an absolute angel to me the other day! Let me rewind 30 minutes before entering the store; It's 3pm and I have to be to my dad's by 5pm for his birthday dinner. I had just picked up my dad's birthday gift from calligraphy girl (see review) it was a one of a kind piece of work in a 16x20 frame. I picked it up and then realized that the bag I had purchased was too small for the frame.. Ooops! So I called mixed bag and spoke to Donna, she was pretty sure the last bag she had in stock would be big enough. So I rush over there and Donna measures my art work and then the bag and assures me it will fit! So she rings me up for the bag and then asks, "do you want that wrapped? Me.... You guys wrap too? She says yes!!! I was so elated... If they didn't have my size bag, dad was getting a garbage bag with an apology! LOL! I'm pretty sure Donna is one of Santa's top present wrappers during Christmas time!! My mouth just stayed open the whole time she wrapped my gift, it was done to perfection! Every time I thought she was done... POOF more magic! When she was done... I took a picture and sent it to my wife and said... What do you think of my wrap job honey?? LOL . This place should make you sign some waivers before you walk in. Surgeon General warnings. Public Service Announcements on mixed bag anonymous groups in the area. Don't be fooled by the outdoor garden flags waving outside this little mafia house. It's all a rouse. They know *we* know all about garden flags. The suburban shortcut to real decorations. Just stick a damn pole with a maple leaf on it to the side of the house and call it Fall. Or Vermont. (Hey, I never said they weren't versatile, but anyway, I digress.) So, the windsock/flag displays are nothing more than a front for the crack/schtuff shop they're running inside ... and I don't even like schtuff. Or crack. (Well, I shouldn't say that. I had to drive 20 minutes out of the way just for them to tell me in person that they don't.
