I tend to forget to check this place out when I'm in a dire need of a home improvement item. I am not in the area much, but when I am I tend to find a lot of cool goodies. They do have a small section of thrift household items but overall they carry pretty new and lightly used items. Think of home depot returns, left overs from an over stocked store or even from a job site or home project. Anyways their mission statement and good they do and bring into the community is something I support. So in the future instead of tossing new/lightly used/good condition home items, see if they'll take it. If not come by and check this place out if you are doing some home or business renovations. I have picked up quite a bit of useful stuff for my home and new business. Everything from cleaning solutions to a brand new toilet plunger. Friendly and helpful staff along with customers.

I heard about Urban roots last year (2025) and participated in 2 events. This year I signed my…read moredaughter up in the preschool program for this spring and it has been a wonderful experience. The programs are extremely hands on, including arts and craft activities, sowing seeds, harvesting and tasting vegetables. My daughter looks forward to visiting Urban Roots all the time. Ellena and all the other staff members are always so friendly and welcoming. They're informative and all seem to really enjoy their jobs at the garden. This place is just wonderful for everyone regardless of age. I highly recommend it for all kids but especially for homeschooling families looking for extra curricular activities.

This month the focus was on St Vincent's Dining Hall. They are feeding more people than ever and they need our help. I am a firm believer that in the USA no one should go hungry, unfortunately that is not the case. Next month I will donate to the food bank. Join me in helping those that through no fault of their own are finding themselves homeless, unemployed, and hungry. Support your favorite charity.

They also give bikes to children through local agencies and businesses. I've purchased a few bikes from them in the past and been quite happy. The staff are friendly. Their is a noticeable difference in knowledge between the trainers and the trainees. What I noticed this trip was that a lot of the bikes seemed overpriced. For instance, there was a used bike for $120 that I could buy new at Walmart for $140 (plus tax). I don't know what changed but it didn't feel like a good deal to buy a bike there any longer. Perhaps the Bike Swap is a good option.

Truckee Meadows Parks Foundation is a private nonprofit whose mission is "to protect and enhance our communities' livability through public engagement, education, and the sustainability of our parks, open spaces, and trails." They provide weekly free interpretive walks at parks throughout the greater Reno/Sparks area. They also have a trail challenge with free monthly guided hikes where you can learn about the history, plant and animal life in our parks and open spaces. All information on these events, maps, and more are available on their website: https://www.tmparksfoundation.org We recently participated in our first guided hike at Ballardini Ranch south of Reno. It was a beautiful picture perfect day and the hike was, for me, a good level of challenge. There was one steep part at the beginning but the rest was easy. People in the group were able to walk at their pace and there were plenty of opportunities to stop and learn about the plant life. We had a guest presenter who talked about pollinators (bees and other insects) and the importance of these to the eco system both for agriculture and the natural biosystem. The two group leaders were knowledgable about the plants and were very patient with my eight gazillion questions about everything! I would highly recommend this organization as a way of getting out and learning about and seeing the beautiful and diverse areas in the Truckee Meadows region.
