SUCH a great business in our community! Urban Roots is a teaching farm that offers kids camps, adult workshops, and many events throughout the year. I've visited for a few of the Dead Plant Society classes, and have found them all to be super informative and fun! Parking is a breeze as well. Most recently I visited for their Holiday Fair, and it was such a nice set up with vendors scattered throughout the farm and in the hoop houses, coffee and crafts and photos with Santa. Definitely check them out for a great family friendly experience!

I came here for a workshop on gardening. They have a big parking lot available right across the street from the main entrance on Gould St. when I arrived, they had a check in area set up and the staff member greeted me immediately, got me checked in, and gave me directions to get to the class. The class itself was so great! It ran over the scheduled time, but other than that, it was full of great information and hands-on experiences. They had snacks and coffee available and raffle prizes. I will definitely be back for more classes and programs here! If you're a teacher, you can take select workshops for free and get professional development credits towards license renewal, which is amazing!

How lucky are we to have Urban Roots in our community? We got a chance to visit the farm during Haunted Hoops, a fantastic family friendly event where children got to let loose and explore every corner of the space with activities, snacks, and a lot of friendly faces all around. They had a station where kids concocted "potions" from dried sage and other herbs and flowers. There was a broom making station with sticks and twine and beautiful natural adornments. My kid had to choose the largest stick available and then complained when we couldn't take it home. There was a snack table with fresh fruit, popcorn and yes, some cookies. There was even a drink station where they had water on offer AND spiked cider with a suggested donation. The best part of the night was the haunted hoop house. The UR team went all out to make a kid friendly fright fest in there that included lights and sounds, creepy decor, and even some live action for added effect. Gosh. I love love love this place and can't wait for my son to go to farm camp now!

I grabbed a monthly produce box and was blown away by the variety and quality. There were so many vegetables, beautiful flowers, and even a box of crackers. Additionally, they provided some recipe cards to go with some of the produce. The staff was so friendly, safe during Covid, and accommodating as I arrived earlier than my pickup time. Plus, they are a local nonprofit in need of support.

Happy 5th Birthday to Urban Roots. What a fantastic non profit. If you do not know where they are located you might drive right by. They are literally a diamond in the rough. What used to be a illegal dump,a karaoke bar and a rundown motel is now a thriving educational facility for washoe county students. Workers with americorps and the vista program work for a year here under a grant. You can tell they love there job and what they have accomplished by there enthusiasm in there voice. We had the pleasure of talking to Kelsi for awhile and she explained the whole program. For those of you who do not know what Urban Roots is about, let me explain. There dream was to educate children where vegetables came from. Where a egg comes from, what a pig looks and feels like. Many of these kids only know vegetables in a grocery store. They have never eaten a fresh radish, pulled a carrot out of the ground and washed it , and then eat it. The little fire that is being started inside these kids is like planting a seed. It will not happen overnight but hopefully one day the child will come home with an interest to grow Carrots. Urban Roots is taking it a step further and educating the teachers at some schools how to prepare a garden and gro we vegetables. Urban Roots has a couple acres here with corn, tomatoes, flowers and seasonal vegetables. They also have a acre at mill and mccarran in the wolfpack agricultural area. They are learning how to grow hops here. The beer we drank tonight was from there hops. They give the hops to local brewers to show them not only that hops can be grown up here, but they are also tasty hops. One bene that we got by going tonight,is we received a membership and discounts to classes. In September they will have a beer making class and later this year, how to make your own soap. This is a very cool organization doing a ton of good. Check them out.

Fluttering, buzzing and humming of flying butterflies and bugs - do you want to hear or see that??…read more How about having the soft tickle of tiny little legs on your arms and hands?? Well that's just some of the really cool things you will get to see, observe and touch at Nevada Bugs & Butterflies!! Come out to the butterfly and science center so you can meet Tessie the Tortoise as she slowly comes out of her house to chomp on some flowers and leaves. Go inside the Butterfly House to have all them whimsically fly around you as if playing a game of tag as you get lost in the beauty of their magical wings and colors. Don't forget to look among the foliage you just may see a caterpillar or too before they cocoon and turn into one of these winged beauties. Take a stroll on the interactive science center path to learn about the indigenous plants of our area and Nevada. Then finish with the wonderful volunteers to learn all kinds of amazing things about butterflies and see up close and personal some different bugs such as: caterpillars, crickets, hissing cockroaches or a centipede with all of it's legs to walk on your hand. That's just some of the amazing things you will find at FREE outdoor facility here at the Nevada Bugs & Butterflies. We were so glad that we found this magical place and that they graciously excepted donations if you so desired (they have donation boxes set up on the property). This was a stop for us prior to our visit to Pacific Grove, CA for the Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary and found out from one of the founders (Cynthia) that was on site that day that they take part of tagging Monarch Butterflies for the migration each year (be sure to check out their website so you can be apart of that - http://nevadabugs.org/). She shared with us her research on the butterflies, what got her and husband to put this beautiful sanctuary together and what was in store for them in the future. We look forward to seeing them expand to something bigger and that more people will get out and enjoy the beauty of Nevada Bugs & Butterflies. We also found out that they welcome small groups and have had homeschool kids come for private tours - NOW THAT'S AWESOME! We had an amazing experience with the volunteers making sure to come out while we were enjoying the outdoor facilities to answer any questions we had and share with us information about the habitat, butterflies, tortoises and we really enjoyed our time there. I would say make the trek out, it's not as far as you think (heck we live in Carson City so what's your excuse). Pack up the kids , or in our case GET IN THE CAR and GO find out about some awesome, beautiful things that are right here in Nevada - Bugs & Butterflies!! Happy Yelping Everyone!!

I am shocked there aren't reviews for Jerry Mitchell Landscaping since he's been an active…read moredesign/landscaping service locally for 30 years. Many people I've talked to know of him or have had their yards done by him. In fact, friends who have used his services on two separate occasions recommended him to me when I wanted to design/re-landscape my backyard. When I first met Jerry, he was energetic and once he saw the backyard, he knew exactly what he incisions for it. He did a paper and colored pencil draw up of his plans and we were sold! His vision seemed amazing and we couldn't wait to enjoy our yard. In August 2018 we paid him 50% down and he said it should take about 4 weeks to complete. Then nothing. We waited for him to tell us when he was going to start and he kept responding that he was finishing up another job so it should be a week or so. That went on for a full month until one day, I was sitting on the couch watching TV and there was Jerry and a team of landscapers in my backyard. I was annoyed he didn't give us a heads up that he was coming over and starting the yard that day, but at the same time, I was happy he was there so I didn't care. His team came and went for 10 months. 10 MONTHS!! They never had a schedule they just showed up and since we have dogs, I asked him to tell us when they would be there so I could lock my dogs in. If they weren't coming, I'd let my dogs have access to the yard. He would say they would be there, I'd lock my dogs in and watch for movement in the backyard on my Ring camera but they only would show up about 50% of the time. His crew left garbage all over. They would leave their lunch and snacks everywhere. Chicken bones, straws, wrappers. After work, I would have to come out and fill half a plastic trash bag of their food waste so my dogs wouldn't eat it. He would invoice us for plants and trees that were never planted and this continued even after he finished the job. It took months after the work was completed for the last invoice to get resolved. He also had a job concurrently at our friend's house and he would tell our friends they got the A team landscaping their yard, which I guess meant we got the B team? I waited years to post this review for a few reasons. I was so mad at Jerry for years that I would have given him a 1 star heated review for his lack of communication, his employees disrespectful trash habits, the length of time it took him to finish my yard, and he is almost invisible on review sites. His designs are amazing! I love my yard! It is beautiful and I use it daily even in the winter. I don't think another landscaper would have had his vision for our little backyard space so I'm so happy he designed our yard but it was a frustrating year working with him.

Jerry's work transformed a yard that was unusable into a retreat for all of our friends and family. It was a massive project involving the demo of the old yard and the design, engineering and construction of a space that contains a natural rock cooling off pool with waterfalls, a fire pit, a covered entertainment area and an outdoor kitchen all tied together with the artistry of grass, plants, trees, shrubs, pavers, fencing and storage, along with lighting and music. All the features in the yard (music, lighting and water feature) can be controlled with Wi-Fi apps from our phones. Jerry worked with plumbers electricians and carpenters to seamlessly put together the best backyard I have ever seen. We doubled our living and entertaining space for a fraction of what it would cost to do a home addition. It was worth twice the price we paid. We love the fact that we did it right the first time. We are in our third summer now and the yard keeps getting better as it matures. Do not give this another thought. Do WHATEVER it takes to hire this man and you will not be dissatisfied with the result. I wish I had pictures to show the yard before, but the final result will do. Thanks Jerry. You are a mensch
