I called to see about bringing some records by to see if they were interested in buying them & had a good conversation with the owner who let me know what she was interested in & what she wasn't. I brought by roughly 50 LP's for her to examine & returned a short time later to be surprised she wanted all of them except for a few. Offered me a decent price for them all & I know she got a few gems out of the bunch since I wasn't concerned about getting top dollar, just wanting to move a few of my sister's massive collection. Great store with quality over quantity, no CD's, but they do have cassette tapes, turntables & some nice accessories. I'll be back for sure. read more

I'm back for another haul at good records and left with quite a few gems. I love spending an hour to hear rummaging the different vinyl that the store offers. This time around I found sentimental records for my keepsake and of course the employee here was amazing per usual, and let me hear the used vinyl. I was looking to buy to ensure I didn't run into any issues when I got home and also gave me a few tips for my own care. They have a decent collection of records, all arranged in alphabetical order by the artists' name. I found one of the records I was particularly looking for so that was nice. No scams, no incredibly overpriced records for an album nobody even knows about, no scratched records, and most importantly no Crossley turntables in sight (at least I think there isn't any unless their holding them hostage upstairs for their war crimes against records) read more

I so badly want to see this store succeed. I've been a regular for so long. Every time they moved I would follow them to their new location. The early days were golden with CJ and Rubberman. You'd walk in and chat with the staff and leave with five new albums of artists you'd never heard of and 99% of the time it was solid. But nothing gold can stay. People move in. Businesses change. The years on LG were hit and miss. Great in-store performances and a massive selection of new and gently used vinyl kept me coming back. But the staff, man. It got rough. Asking anything from the staff was a grind. Attitudes were abundant if you could get their attention. But GR was THE shop for good music. And then competition arrived. I found myself frequently going to those other shops more and more because I found better prices and friendlier people. Still, GR is a great place for new music. Now they are on Garland. And I've tried in three occasions to visit but the parking situation was a problem. Twice I've run out of luck. The third time I actually parked at the church down the road, which I knew meant I was risking being towed. (I didn't get towed) The new spot is tiny but I've been to smaller stores. It looks like staffing has been greatly reduced. I could still pick up the negative vibe that the LG location developed. Man, it just doesn't feel like GR any more. read more

Only giving one star because I have to, but rudest employee encounter. We walked in and the employee in the back had no mask on, so we assumed we didn't need one. The owner or employee or whoever walked up to us and had a mask on and was hard to understand, so we just said okay thank you. He then came back again and said we must wear a mask, after asking for a mask he told us to leave and "please & thank you never come back." I thought that was pretty rude when we just asked for a mask, which he told us he had extras. I'm also confused why he's taking extra precautions of covid but thinks it's ok to get that close to us to tell us to wear a mask. But to each their own, I personally won't support a business that's this rude to customers. read more

Markup of 40% is not standard in the industry anymore. The new location is a shell of itself -- I literally had to CLIMB over wooden-crafted staging (like a McDonald's playpen) to sift through newly-released 7"s. This store has a pretty good selection BUT don't dare touch the BRAND NEW SEALED records alphabetized in the boxes (with artists dividers ) under the shelves for any reason cause apparently they are OFF LIMITS! Why would you set product on the floor in your store for customers if they are not ready for purchase. The staff there are RUDE! Going to a record store is a dying art and should be fun NOT a bunch of stupid rules that make no sense at all. Looks like the goal is to sell records that you have on your floor but I guess not! Oh well, going back to online shopping so I don't have to freak with dumb rules that make no sense. read more

First time I went, the people worked seemed okay and partially helpful. Second time I went, I tried to ask about a record they could purchase, and they told me I'd be better off selling online, but the manner they talked to me seemed very belittling, like if I didn't understand how they'd essentially undersell me. I was more than open to seeing how much they'd offer, but the owner didn't bother continuing the conversation and left me to do something else. I walked around a little more until I figured to just leave since they had apparently said their piece. I'm new to collecting vinyl, so I'm unsure of a lot, but they weren't helpful at all and made me even more self-conscious about my purchases. Wouldn't recommend for new folks. read more

Good Records is the best music store I have been to yet and I have been a patron for a looooong time since the Good Latimer location. I totally believe it beats out Easy Street in Seattle and Waterloo in Austin. Chris keeps Good Records in tip-top shape and I love that. I like that I don't have to weed through crap music to find the real goods since they don't put 15 copies of the same album in the bin. The staff is friendly, the free in-store shows with free beer can not be beat and the music selection is stellar! Check out DJ CeePee on Wednesday nights 10pm - 2am at the Billiard Bar. I'll shed many a tear when the vanishing breed of record stores is gone. Man there were few things as cool to me as a kid / teen / 20 something / 30 something...(that's far enough) as going to the record store and flipping through the LP's. Talking to the cool music geeks manning the counter, or watching the varied humanity searching for their perfect tunes. Finding 10 cd's I really wanted but not bein' able to afford them all. Delayed gratification. Finding the one I had to have... Breathless...ripping that plastic wrapper into tiny pieces off the cd case and trying to jam it in the cd player in my car as fast as I could. Kinda like you and your girlfriend yanking each other's clothes off as fast as you could at the front door to your place and forgetting to take your shoes off first and your jeans stuck inside out on your foot... Driving aimlessly...home...anywhere...blind to where I was driving with those first songs blaring with windows down...the music almost projected onto the backs of my eyes so that I was driving on auto pilot. Realizing you just got something great...heart beating fast and sonic elation settling over you... So it will be a shame when the record stores are all gone. Good Records is great. I loved it more back on Good Latimer but the Greenville space is bigger and better. I do miss CJ cause he was friendly and great with the suggestions. The guys there now: I kind of feel like I'm interrupting them when I need to buy something or just ask a question, but that's no big deal-just ask for suggestions anyway. They've got great music and you can listen to plenty before you buy. Do what I do: check out the Pitchfork ratings on your phone, or even Amazon reviews while you're listening. Then buy what feels right. Yeah I can buy from itunes or Amazon cheaper, but it's worth the small surcharge for trying to preserve a part of the past for the future. read more

My last review being on the World Famous Amoeba Records in L.A. has prompted me to write a review on the first record store I ever spent a lot of time in when I was in my 20's: Good Records in Dallas. Back in 2006 in the sweltering Texas summer heat my very pregnant friend Jamie and I cut out of work early to head to Good Records. If you didn't know Good Records, though a small record store, has in-store performances of various bands. This summer they had managed to book a popular yet still up and coming band called....drum roll please... The Yeah Yeah Yeah's. This became one of my most favorite performances ever. If you know Texas heat in August you know how hot it can get and Good Records was sweltering!! Because Jamie was preggers we stood near the front door to be able to breathe easier. After about 30 minutes those same front doors opened and Karen O, Nick Zinner and Brian Chase brushed past us, through the crowd and up on the stage. PS: Karen O touched my elbow. And I think Nick may have possibly stepped on the outside of my foot (it was jam packed near the front door) but I can't be positive. Through the heat and humidity the Yeah Yeah Yeah's performed. Karen made a comment about how hot it was but the band were troopers and completed their entire set, not quitting. This is one of the many reasons why I love this band. Since that time I have seen them perform in sold out amphitheaters and close out a night of ACL when the Beastie Boys had to pull out and they are always each time so dedicated to their fans. Of course this kind of stuff at Good Records would not have been possible had it not been for the genius of Tim Delaughter. Those who grew up in the 90's in North Texas like myself know how much of a, how shall I say it, demi-god Tim really is. No, really. Tim has IT. He has that je ne sais quoi. This goes beyond his good looks and musical ability. Tim is magic. The same magic applies in the formula of Good Records. These guys have vinyl (have you been hearing the recent trends showing the popularity in vinyl these days? Even USA Today is reporting on it--YES!). They have CD's. They have recommendations. But the most important thing is the voice behind all of this. The in-store performances, the people who work and run this place are why you want to go here to find out what is good, to see bands performing who are good, and to really immerse yourself in the truth of music while at the same time supporting local business and the music industry. My go-to source for records in the Dallas area. Good Records has a lot of the old and new records I'm wishing to add to my collection, plus many other goodies (CD's, T-shirts, posters, collector sets, etc.). They also have giant cardboard album covers they sell strictly based on the owner's willingness to sell. I lucked out and bargained for my giant El Camino cover of The Black Keys...so you never know. The staff is semi helpful in that they know the store and when approached will provide help, but not always with that spoonful of sugar that helps you feel like you're not asking too much. Either way...this doesn't sour my purchasing. As long as you don't make fun of my purchases (hey, there's nothing wrong with Spice Girls) we're good. PS...I doubt they sell Spice Girls, so don't go looking for that based on my review. This is a smaller store, so selection might not always be full, but ask and you might find when they'll have it again. read more

I don't know if they're new to the location and are still setting up, but that's the only reason i could understand why my 1st experience there was so disappointing. 1st issue- came from Austin to visit an out of area record shop is usually exciting. I enjoying hearing about the shop and maybe talk with the owners. I always budget a few hundred bucks just in case I find a good selection and feel like supporting the shop, weather thats because the owners cool, unique shop, or just an impressive selection. This place had none of those things, I ended up not spending a single dollar. from the beginning, I didn't even feel recognized, even though I was literally the only customer in the shop. 2nd issue- the entire shop is set up in abc order not by genre. I may be off here, but every shop I ever been to has music by genre. seeing miles davis next to drake is weird. personally, I want to see a jazz or rap or metal "section". 3rd issue- maybe they do have a special collectors/rare section, but i didn't see one. and since the workers that day weren't very helpful I didn't bother to ask. but that always shows what kind of style or focus the shop has. seeing shops that have rare jazz pressings, or 1st pressing of Black Flag really says something for style. 4th issue- selection is garbage. not impressed with the selection. it was 25% dollar bin garage sale stuff like old haggered elton john and about 75% of the records were horrible quality new records by generic labels that you could probably buy from starbucks or barnes and nobles. your better off just buying the same crap records from amazon. if this is what dallas has to offer record shop wise. I feel extremely thankful to has so many great shops here in austin. read more

If you're a lover of indie music, this is on your list of "must go to" when in Dallas. It's owned by Tim Delauter (Polyphonic Spree and Tripping Daisy) and he's been know to hang out there. Their selection definitely leans indie, so if you're looking for more mainstream artists, you're better off at Best Buy. (When I was in there today, someone asked for Jack Johnson. The clerk restrained himself from rolling his eyes and dutifully looked it up. No, they didn't have it.) There are numerous listening stations throughout the store which is definitely a bonus. Plus their in stores are legendary. Lots of up and coming bands play on that stage. All of the in stores I have been to have been really fun. (They sometimes even have beer and food!) read more

Very cool store. Downstairs is almost all vinyl, mostly new, and they have a wide, somewhat esoteric variety of artists/albums. I like the fact that they don't have it split up by genres, and just put everything together, much easier to find stuff, especially when it's a genre-busting band. They also have a decent amount of CDs upstairs that are mostly used. There's plenty of room, it's well organized, prices are reasonable (rent ain't cheap in that part of town) and the staff seemed friendly ( I honestly didn't have much interaction with them on my trip). This place is definitely worthy of your time and gas money. Since this place is located Lowest Greenville, known for it's cool vibe and lack of parking, you might plan to go during off peak times/non-party times, i.e. in the mornings or early afternoons while most typical Lowest Greenville patrons are still sleeping off their hangovers from the night before. Fortunately, Goodrecords has parking right in front of the store, which is extremely rare for that part of town and VERY convenient assuming it's not full. read more

Inventory glitch meant that they didn't actually have what I had purchased online. The man working in the shop acted like he didn't want to be bothered by any customers. Overall bad experience. The owners are nice people, so I will give them that, and I can't expect the owners to be there to be nice to their customers. In my life, I worked in retail for a total of about 20 years. Sketchy inventory sometimes happens, but being nice to customers is always a 'given' in the equation of being a retail store. I won't be back and will not order online. good people. the two men working here may seem mean like many of the reviews say but they really aren't. they're good men and are very nice. i had a good conversation with one of the workers about artists that i like and their listening parties are very fun to attend because of the nice ambience. i have yet to explore the upstairs but im sure it's as cool as the bottom half of the store. and the records are not overpriced. the website is easy to navigate unlike josey and movietrading co. and i honestly prefer this place to josey. keep it up guys! read more

Hipster Records....... Is exactly what it should be called. If you come in and don't have a Smurf-Hat on or just 1 arm full of random tattoos, then odds are your probably NOT welcome. I've been twice thinking the first time was just an off day. WRONG!!!! The first time I went, the owner and his friends were setting up for a jam session and acted like I was in there way The second time I went, the SAME hipster behind the counter made sure I would not return!!! I get to Good Records about once a month. They have a decent selection...sometimes you can hit the jackpot and other times it's a big miss. I went in yesterday and the young lady behind the counter didn't even look up to greet me in anyway....she had this sour puss look on her face the whole time. I know everyone has bad days, but ...hello... you are working in a great little record shop. Yes they have high prices, but it's on Lower Greenville so I know the rent is probably high. But her whole persona was a big turnoff for me...in fact I stayed less than five minutes and I can spend almost an hour there usually. Hopefully next time I'm inshe will have the day off....and to the management, I say, employees have a direct effect on the end user who ultimately are paying for your establishment to remain open. read more

The red head and older man who work at Good Records need to cheer up. Their days are consistently bad and you showing up looking for a new record will undoubtedly make it worse.... it's a shame that guys who are privileged to work at an independent record store could have such bad attitudes about their jobs and it's customers. I would spend a lot more time and money at Good Records if it were a personable experience but I've given up on Good Records at this point. I hate to complain because I really love having an independent record shop 1/2 a mile from home, but meh. Most of the records are new (read: expensive), variety is sorely lacking, and if you ask the dude up front ANYTHING, he gives you the stink eye. The fun of digging through crates is completely lost at this place. Btw. Even when musicians in town perform in-store, good luck actually finding their album there. It's that bad. I actually got laughed at for asking. No thanks! I'll stick with Dead Wax any day. They may have 1/2 the records, but the selection is refreshingly eclectic, the owner will special order albums for you, and you always feel like your business is appreciated. It's a real bummer to write a negative review about an independent record store in these times, but some folks are just asking for it. I was really excited to visit the new & expanded location having just moved back to Texas. As a kid, I would frequent the first location all the time & was always excited to return to it's positive atmosphere. HOWEVER, bigger is not always better. My first issue was the vinyl. The selection was pretty slim & overpriced. The vinyl is all behind the compact discs which looks awful. The vinyl is only organized alphabetically which means that all genres are mixed in together. I find this very distasteful. On top of that, every single band has a plastic label sticking out which makes it annoying to browse through the records because there are a million pieces of plastic sticking out & you eventually don't even look at the records anymore & just look at the dumb plastic labels. The record guy working was a total dick. He was super rude when asking him simple questions (I think he was busy texting) & when I later decided to purchase some records he barely acknowledged me & I was SO close to not even buying the records I had selected. Seriously, I understand record store employees who are grumpy or hungover... but this was a new level of asshole. What a prick. The two things that kept me coming back to my favorite PNW record stores were the employees who were honest, friendly, grumpy, & helpful. I probably won't ever return to Good Records. Which is unfortunate because North Texas is not the best place for record stores & I like to spend money on quality vinyl. read more

Yesterday my boyfriend and I visited this record shop while vacationing out of town for the weekend for my birthday. We were pretty excited to check this place out as my boyfriend and I are avid record collectors and loved the idea of getting some downtime to flip through some vinyl. The place came recommended by friends and we were excited to check them out. We had no idea there was to be a show there. There was no signage stating you had to have wristbands either. We walked in and gave a brief look around before heading up the stairs to see what the top level had to offer. As we peruse the selection some long haired hipster girl with a whiney voice approaches me and demands to know where my wristband is. I'm caught off guard and trying to figure out what wristband? Do we need a wristband to shop? She states we need a wristband for the band. I tell her we're not here to see a band, we're shopping. She tells us she has to check with her boss and marches down the stairs in a huff. My boyfriend and I are as bewildered as you the reader at this point. We shrug our shoulders and go back to flipping through their extensive collection of 45s. Once again we are greeted by our favorite person and she states we need to get wristbands if we are to be up there to watch the band. I tell her "I told you, we aren't here for a band we're shopping." She becomes very melodramatic in response and shrieks at us "I'm just telling you to get wristbands!" Okay this is very off putting and let's be honest, downright weird. I mean she doesn't even tell us where to get these wristbands of apparent wonderment. Do they fall from the sky when you say the magical phrase? My boyfriend and I are debating just walking out but after driving across town just to check out this shop, we decide we'll just look downstairs and if she has a problem with us shopping, she can get her boss who apparently is a troll with magical wristbands. As we meander around I look up to see my new best friend glaring at us from the entrance of the front door. I mean she's literally just standing there staring at us like "I know what you did." I tell my boyfriend we should just go as the lights overhead are shut off and a band starts to play. No can do, he has spotted the box set for Iron Maiden and Dukes of Stratosphere. He's also noticed the Joy Division and the Smiths box sets as well as the new Devo Hardcore DVD. Between that and the Depeche Mode box set, Killing Joke record and Sleater-Kinney poster I found we would have made out like bandits. We seriously would have bought all this stuff and when we approached the cash register to ask about these items we were ignored. Were we being ignored because we didn't have wristbands? Was it because of this show? Did we have hella bad body odor? We don't know. My boyfriend took one look over to our smug buddy at the door that does an amazing impression of sucking on sour candy and puts down the dvd and we walk out. I can imagine there being parameters in place for shows at a record store. I understand that there may be rules we don't understand for having majestic fairy tale wristbands. There was beer being served there. Maybe there was reason for that. We don't know. That wasn't ever communicated. What I know is that we drove across town in rainy weather in a city we are unfamiliar with celebrating birthday weekend to come and shop ourselves silly on vinyl and music paraphernalia to be hassled by an angry young hipster about wristbands that she never even told us how to get or when or why. Could she have been nicer? Uh yeah. Could she have explained things? Yep. Could she have led us through the magical tunnel to the land of the wristband? Absolutely. Instead we left disappointed and disenchanted with "Good" records. Yeah. They may have good records but they also have bad service. read more

Huge space. Unfortunately, most of it is wasted on new vinyl and CDs. The used vinyl section is tiny and the last part of the alphabet is stored in cardboard boxes on the floor, despite the vast expanse of shelf space taken up by over-priced new vinyl. No respect for original LPs, at all. The used LP titles that are available are militantly run of the mill; unless you're looking to complete your Dan Fogelberg or America catalogs, there's not much here for a real collector. Also, it may be unfair to make a judgement about the entire store's staff based on one employee but the one I encountered was unhelpful and acted annoyed that I even inquired about the location of used vinyl. Stick to Amazon. They have more character at half the price. read more

Just take those old records off the shelf! I guess I am just old fashioned but I love being able to actually look at album covers, touch them, and talk to people who knows about music. I like record stores! It's sad that many good record stores being pushed out, first by big box stores and now by people who buy megabytes instead of something tangible. While that might work for some people I like the whole experience of discovering my music through the tips of my fingers. Listening to classic tunes overhead and being helped by cool people who are passionate about music. At Good Records you can still find actual records, you know those big round Frisbee looking things with holes in the middle. As well as cool t-shirts, posters, and toys. Did I mention they also have LIVE CONCERTS! Good Records supports new and local bands by showcasing them in their store. Yep, they live, breath and eat music at Good Records! People who are this passionate deserve to be in business so go give them a visit! That kind of music just soothes the soul. read more
