Bad experience with billing and felt squeezed for more money. I came in for a simple chip tooth repair which was chipped enough to be covered by insurance and three appointments later I ended up having to pay out of pocket. I wish the billing dept would go to bat for their patients and set better expectations. read more

I reported Dr. Schaefer's unethical billing practices via a complaint with the Attorney General. Lori, his Office Mgr, solicited me to buy dental insurance from "one of our patients" & provided written & verbal costs of my procedure, inclusive of the insurance participation. Then, the bill was hundreds of dollars more than the committed price, without explanation by Lori, while I was standing in front of her throne, after hours of dental work & a numb face & tongue. Further, she put invoices in front of me, after 2 appts, showing that I had a "previous balance due." I said that I'm always required to pay in full; how could I have a previous balance? Lori spat on me with her eye rolling, RBF, condescending bullying & she could not answer my question on the previous balance due, on the invoice that I had just watched her generate. read more

Hawaiian Smiles was an excellent establishment under Dr. Barney's practice especially his staff that was welcoming and I had the best dental care possible. I actually enjoyed going to the dentist.I flew out from Colorado to see Dr. Barney for decades, no problem. When Dr. Shafer took over Dr. Barney's practice I continued my dental care with Dr. Shafer, but from the beginning I was treated badly by his staff, Lori tried to bill me more than the proposed cost was and it became difficult to get the message across that I was being over-charged. Every time I came in for my appointment I was delayed by office staff about billing that made my appointment time less than scheduled. In fact Dr. Shafer had to rush with the drilling and filling. My small teeth some were refilled the #6-9 felt like swiss cheese holes, he did all four at once. My next appointment he did 4,5,21,28, I had him polish the burrs I felt from his previous work. I did complain about the color he used on surface filling on my centrals that was a shade darker than I hoped for because after time surface filling get darker. This probably upset the dentist some. He was going through (dismissing)a lot of staff at that time too. The next two appointments were difficult and his staff hurt my feelings being so unwelcoming they did not tell me the truth so I was wondering what was going on. Another patient seemed upset after her appointment paying the bill. And another was upset she could not get her teeth cleaning done at one appointment. I had elected to get implants done on two molars and a bicuspid, Dr. Kooning did the implants, Dr. Shaffer did the digital impressions for the crowns. Dr. Koonings wand for digital impressions was form fitting small,Dr. Shafer's wand was bigger hardly fit in my mouth,when the crowns came in two were perfectly fitting but the molar on the other side was not fitting well for it was thinner,felt like it was squeezing my gums,somewhat painful still is. I suggested another crown made, but Dr. Shafer disagreed so I accepted his decision. The healing abutments were removed then the crowns were put on. I asked for the healing abutment since I had paid for them and if anything needed to be done I had them since I lived in Colorado. Well the dental assistant said, we are going to REUSE them. She was very rude to me so I left, headed to the airport. When I got home I felt I needed those abutments so I spoke with Dr. Shafer about my concern, he said I am DONE! They did send me the abutments. Therefore I have no dentist now feeling very hurt that I was treated in this manner. read more

This place sent me a "no-show" bill for an appointment I never scheduled. This place has shady practices and I wouldn't recommend this business to anyone. They will make appointments for past customers without even getting their approval and they won't even provide any confirmation except for a "no-show" bill. I am trying to get them to delete my information from their computers so they can stop pulling this scam on me. read more

Great practice that offers friendly and competent services. I've always hated the dentist (who doesn't?), but Dr. Shafer makes it 'tolerable' to be there. He's super nice and has a great sense of humor. Enjoys having fun (ask him about Halloween) and it appears his staff has a good time too. They are all so happy and have a nice camaraderie. He's given me consultations above and beyond a normal dental visit to discuss implants. He's clear and concise and does not push his opinion. You can't go wrong here! read more

Absolutely the best dentist I have ever had. Dr. Shafer has an incredible bedside manner. He actually took the time to listen to my concerns and then outlined a treatment plan that was acceptable to me. His treatment plan ranged from the necessary to the nice to do. I have had past dentists that tried to force the "nice to do" treatments on me, which oftentimes I found unnecessary. Dr. Shafer provided great detail on why he thought a procedure was necessary. He provided photographs of each problem spot so you can see what he sees. When it came to the elective procedures, Dr. Shafer gave the pros and cons to the procedures and detailed why or why not the procedure would be beneficial. Dr. Shafer is the first dentist that did not feel like a salesperson up-selling on each visit. His focus was an me, the patient and my concerns, not on increasing the bill. I have left many dental offices in the past wondering if the procedure they wanted to do was really needed; not with Dr. Shafer. When you leave his office, you are fully informed and the treatment plan is solely your decision. The staff at Good Life Dentistry is absolutely the best as well. Highly personable, attentive to your needs, and great company during your visit. Absolutely the best and I would recommend Good Life Dentistry to everyone. read more

I have a long term irrational fear of going to the dentist. As a new patient I can not speak highly enough about the treatment I received (both dental and as a "customer") from Dr. Shafer and the entire staff. They have truly gone above and beyond to make me feel welcome and comfortable. While I may not ever "look forward to going to the dentist" I can safely say...I look forward to see those in the office. I don't feel like a number...but a valued patient they truly care about. I've been going to Good Life Dentistry for about two years. I've never had anything but a great experience. They are always prompt, gentle, and relaxing. Katie cleaned my teeth and is very nice and personable. Dr. Shafer is also great and personable. I am incredibly impressed with this dental practice! I had temporary guardianship of a child and Dr. Shafer's office was able to squeeze in 3 appointments in the span of a week and a half. They did a cleaning, filled approximately 8 filings, and did a follow-up treatment. They were very professional, extremely kind and considerate, and provided excellent care. They were sensitive to the child's fears and were very friendly. The office appeared clean and newer. There was even a Keurig station with coffees, teas, hot chocolate! Hawaiian Smiles used to be a good place to go but the staff and the way they treat people has gone downhill. It's always bothered me that they have staff meetings around 8 am, so if you are a patient you just sit in the lobby waiting for the meeting to break up. This happened to me today arriving 5-10 minutes early for an 8 am appointment with no one at the front desk to greet you. So I went to the bathroom and sat in the lobby until the employees came up front. But instead of checking me in, they just went to their computers without a word and left me sitting there wondering "what was going on"? Awhile after my appointment time, I started getting angry so I asked if Danielle was there to do my teeth cleaning"? The lady replied "yes," and finally woke up that a patient needed help. Then Danielle walked up and I commented I was getting angry because of being ignored and it being past my appointment time, and she replied sarcastically "What five minutes or so." That was the last straw. I walked out! This new dentist, Dr. Shafer that took over the office from Dr. Barney, needs to reconsider having staff meetings when patients are waiting, instruct his employees to greet ALL patients immediately and make sure they are taken care of, and coach employees on their attitudes and acting like they care about giving good service. read more

My teeth have been through a lot and Dr Barney has always done his best to make them look and feel great. In terms of shots, the roof of the mouth hurts the most, and I've gotten shots by other dentists, but dr. Barney has a way of adjusting my mouth to ease the pain of the shot. That is a true mark of dedication and experience that is not easily acquired through schooling. I have no doubt he is teaching his skills to the new doc as well! Highly recommended!
