Originally, when my husband took me to Good Buddy restaurant in 2014-2015, the food and service was Awesome. It's been several years since we have come back and we understand that Manyyyyy things in the world and many things with "Food and Service" has dramatically changed. So, I totally Get It. Fast forward to present day 2023 and my family and I decided to return to Edmonton to visit family that we haven't seen since before the Pandemic. We all met at Good Buddy for Cart service Dim sum! I couldn't wait! In our party, there was 7 people and we ordered a TON of food, rolls, soups, desserts and Tea. My mom joined us and we also are a messy bunch, so, I asked politely for more Napkins and a few more glasses of water. The young man server sarcastically repeated the amount of water refills that I asked for. I was confused because water is Free... isn't it?? This is tap Water. Not bottled. And he asked for how many napkins, as if he personally buys them himself. Everyone enjoyed their meal, not I, and the server just never came back with napkins. Good authentic Chinese food. Pretty fast. Huge dining room accommodates over 100 people easily. Great dim sum all day. Very good priced meal specials. Good Buddy is a Chinese restaurant in northgate mall. There is plenty of parking and reservations are not really ever needed here because the place is so large. Even on Chinese new year or weekends. The place is never completely full. That's why I like it. They also have delivery which is pretty fast as well. Never taking more than an hour if you live in the northside of Edmonton. It really is great when you are pressed for time and lazy. I mostly come here for dinner service. The set meals are a great deal. The three course duck is consistently delicious and they have an all day dim sum menu available. If you are dining with at least three people, I would highly recommend the three course duck which comes with a duck pancake dish, with a duck soup and a choice between jellyfish duck lettuce wraps or a duck stir fry. They have live lobsters, crab and tilapia fish. And If you are wanting these dishes ask the server because they often have daily specials for lobster or crab. They have an all day dim sum menu which is pretty awesome and the dishes are made fresh to order which can result in these dishes coming out last compared to other dishes. The dishes are okay but not the best in Edmonton. Although the portion sizes are pretty big here. The food is good. It was hit or miss the first few years but now the food is pretty consistent and is authentic enough for Chinese food. They do have lots of the western style Chinese dishes available too. My favorite dishes are the deep fried sole fish in soy sauce, beef gailan chow mein and the lobster in cream sauce with noodles. Always delicious and tasty they never disappoint! I would skip the bubble tea here. The bubble tea is all made with instant powder and it doesn't taste good at all. Definitely a skip. Its casual here but I have celebrated special occasions here as well. There is a private room in the back if you don't want to be in the large open area. Overall Good buddy is reliable and consistently good enough. Prices are mid range and are comparable to most Chinese restaurants in Edmonton. It is cheaper than Cha tea palace or Golden rice bowl. First time was dinner, it was busy so we were patient and the time passed and we realized that everyone around us was enjoying their food, they had lost our order. We had to order again. Try again for lunch, we were seated and quickly decided our order and tried to signal anyone but they were busy clearing tables. 2 people clearing one table chatting and not being attentive to any customers, we tried again to give our order, then as we were leaving they said sorry and bye. The service is terrible, the restaurant was not even busy maybe 5 tables seated at most, they did not even bother trying to seat us, once we were seated they only served us tea, no menus was given for us to look at and order from, so ambiance of the restaurant is terrible. Unless you want terrible customer service, we walked out of the restaurant, also they charge you 15% gratuity for just a group of 4 people. . They use real fish belly here (not pork skin like others) and although there was real crab, it was quite minimal. House BBQ pork was too fatty for my liking and a touch too salty. Enjoyed the beef gai lan - the gai lan was fresh. Sweet & sour pork was tender and seasoned well. Beef rice noodles was standard. That was the ONLY flavour any of it had. The cashew chicken was blah at best, with a hint of fish. The beef & broc had not a single dash of any kind of seasoning, with a hint of fish. The chicken friend rice wasn't as gross as the other dishes, but the rice was not cooked. The stuffed bell pepper was not fit for consumption, despite being described as "a green bell pepper with a delicious filling, deep fried". We decided to get dim sum and they had a few carts with most of the staples dumplings, rice rolls, sticky rice, spring rolls, egg plant and tofu stuffed with shrimp, ribs, and chicken feet. Although it was not hot and fresh out of the kitchen, the two items we ordered were a suitable temperature. We also decided on the chicken, sausage, and mushroom served with rice in the hot pot. It took a bit of time to arrive at the table but it was fresh and hot. There was a lot of rice and I would have preferred more of the chicken, sausage, and mushroom. It was a large portion size and for the two of us with the other two dim sum items, it was enough food. The service was good to refill the tea pot and bring the carts around a few times. Over the past couple of years I have had both Dim Sum and regular dinner dining experiences at Good Buddy. I'd say they are on my B list for Dim Sum choices - their prices are average and the quality was fairly good but I didn't find the selection to be overwhelmingly unique. My husband and I have enjoyed our regular Chinese favorites here like Hot and Sour Soup but I don't think I'd make a special trek here just for supper or Dim Sum. The price for two people to have dimsum has gone up substantially! This is the major difference I am seeing besides the renovation, new tables, and lack of iconic table cloths on some outer tables. I was shocked to see our bill of $41 before tip after only having a few dishes. We had exactly 5 plates and a fountain coke. (They don't charge for the tea here.) Good thing big tips aren't the norm for dimsum... Honestly I've been to Jumbo dimsum on the west side and paid $65 for three men, with healthy appetites, eat to their hearts content (20-30 dishes). Although it works out to around $20/person in both scenarios the volume of food is quite shocking. Now would I say this place does better dimsum then Jumbo? Maybe, but does that justify the price... not in my books! I feel like they are trying to cover their renovation costs. But it's hurting their business cuz we were there on a Sunday at 11am (prime time dimsum time) and it wasn't busy. There were a lot of open tables. As a reference, I've actually seen lineups out the door at that time of day and it was -35C outside!!! If anyone reading this still decides to eat here, then try to sit at the first row of tables when you enter. The food carts usually go down this isle first so you get better options and hotter food. Apparently this place is a frequent favourite of my father in law. I most often come for dim sum, but have eaten other meals here & have been here when the other half of the restaurant was rented out for an event. This location offers all day dim sum on top of their menu, unlike the south side location which does menu orders only. High chairs, booster seats and cutlery are available upon request. Decor is dark, but still bright from the natural light of the front glass wall of the restaurant. There is a corner aquarium which has live koi as opposed to seafood, and you can actually see through it into the kitchen which is pretty neat. They have TVs that play food shows or other random stuff. The waiting area is quite small, in fact there's no extra seating for that & it can get crowded at the front entrance. You can also order takeout too if dining in is not your thing. They have a good assortment of dim sum dishes in their carts, but if you want something like BBQ meat buns, those are made to order & take about 15min. to steam. It's also one of those type of restaurants where it's service upon request. I've never had issues with the food or the service here & prices are not too bad either. read more

A really great dim sum and more place! The food was fast and the service good. The decor was enjoyable as well. With several menus( dim sum, dinner, and one more) it did make choosing what we wanted to eat a little bit more of a lengthy process, but with such a vast selection there is sure to be something to please everyone. The chow mein's were stellar! We had the seafood and the house chow mein. The dim sum was also really good and I would definitely recommend. The dishes were filling and of course we got fortune cookies at the end to complete to meal. We come here for family gatherings. They seem to have an ongoing promotion of buying $55 worth of food you getting a free noodle dish. The food is traditional and quite tasty if you know what to order. I suggest going with someone who is familiar with the cultural dishes to get the best bang for your buck. I find the food to be a little greasy and some dishes to be lacking the extra zip. The restaurant has a nice ambiance and is quite clean. The place is fairly modern and recently updated in the last few years. Parking is available and the staff are friendly and helpful. The problem is that Vancouver has some of the best Chinese food that this food is disappointing. The server was hustling hard for us to order fish, watermelon juice, pea shoots, etc. My mom agreed to braised pork ribs from the pressure tactics. Food tastes better than fast food after a long day. Service was minimal. I have also tried the dim sum here and my opinion is the same as the dinner food. I've been here several times. This time was my first time for take out. I very much love Good Buddy, with it's excellent food. We ordered yumyum chicken, garlic soya chicken and chicken fried rice. Everything was great, as per usual, except for the yumyum chicken. It was very much just breeding and no chicken. It was also really tough and dry. First time this has ever happened and we've eaten here at least 6 times. Isolated incident. I won't let it ruin my judgement of this place. I very much enjoy sitting down and eating here as they have a pretty good atmosphere and a great selection. The service is good, the price reasonable, the location at Northgate Mall makes for ample parking and it looks nice inside (i am particularly fond of the wonderful seat covers). They serve all the usual suspects from sticky rice to chicken feet. It's kind of hit and miss. I think they excel at the shrimp dumplings, very juicy. Their chicken feet, however, could use some work. On Sunday's it can fill up fast and it is a big place. To make sure you get a spot I wouldn't come here much later than 10:45 am. I do enjoy coming to Good Buddy. I would rate it a solid 3.5. Perfect place for big parties because it has so much room. read more

Good Buddy consistently delivers a great Asian style meal. I'm really picky about the Chinese food I consume. I don't like greasy I do like fresh, especially vegetables. Good Buddy has a huge selection of all the 'good stuff' -wonton soup that is filled with dumplings, chicken balls that are in a light fluffy batter, ginger beef that is tender, green onion cakes that are moist and tasty, noodles that are firm and flavourful... I could go on. They do the basics exceptionally well. Sauces are the other thing, they don't drown out the flavours rather they are served on the side for you to chose how much to use. It overly sweet either. The other side of dining in or ordering out is value. Good Buddy delivers here as well -sorry for the bad pun- they provide generous portions and the overall price is well in line. We will have 12 meals from our last order which equates to about $10 per person. My only complaint is the on line ordering system. A tad confusing at check out. Overall, and consistently, this is one of top three traditional Asian restaurants in town. Go there. read more

If you want Chinese food late at night, Good Buddy's is one of the places in town open the latest. I've called before at 2 a.m. and lucky for us they could still deliver. The first time I called in an order the food came fast and it was pretty good for cheap late-night fare. I found some of the veggie dishes a bit slimy and the chicken balls were all dough, as they are in most places, but the singapore noodles and sweet & sour pork filled the hole, with lots of left overs. The second time we ordered, the food didn't come for three hours!! In fact, we went to bed and the phone rang at 4 a.m. and the guy still thought he could drop it off! It included a choice of 4 appetizers and 4 entrees for about $80 so it's a good deal. The bbq pork was fatty but succulent with flavor. They only gave two small pieces of calamari. The shrimp with veggies and xo entree had a nice kick to it. I liked the cordyceps and shiitake mushrooms with the steamed chicken. The sweet and sour pork tasted like what I would find at most Canadian Chinese restaurants. We went to Good Buddy for dinner Saturday around 5. There was some room for improvement. The menus on the table didn't include the dim sum menu, so we had to request it. I ended up having to grab small bowls from the other table since we only had plates. When the waitress came to take drink requests, I answered I would like tea and she walked off without talking to the other two people with me to confirm they wanted the same. We went here for dinner a while back and had a really good meal. I was worried because of its location in North Edmonton that it would be chicken balls and other pseudo - Chinese food, but it wasn't. We had chow mein which was really good and a veggie dish that had was both flavourful and crispy. But the hands down winner was the Peking Style pork chops. My sister bought 2 different flavored crabs and got it delivered. It was terrible, the crab meat was hard and sticking to the shell which seems to be because it was previously frozen. Just moved back to Edmonton. Love authentic style Chinese cooking. Researched the best places here on YELP and went to Good Buddy because it is close to where we live. First time we went whole restaurant was closed on a Saturday night for a private party. Second try -Typical open noisy Chinese restaurant. Male server was slow, spilled water and food on us. After second spill I ran him off, and none too politely either. Replacement female waitress was great. Food was okay but not spectacular. We ordered off the traditional menu. Hot and sour soup had pretty good flavour but not very spicy and a little on the too viscous side. Menu says no MSG. The beef was VERY heavily MSGed. Tasted good but I kept getting up for water in the middle of the night and my wife had a screaming headache. The vegetables were over done and the noodles quite bland despite having ordered a spicy dish. May have been just a bad night but am going to keep looking for that great traditional place that will match my old favourites in Calgary like the Golden Central on Centre and Macleod. read more
