After last year's horrendous experience, mostly due to miscommunication and a total lack of follow up and customer service of the front desk lady (who always refused to transfer me to anyone else), John had reached out to apologize and asking if I would give him another chance in 2020. So yesterday I did. I have been going through a difficult year, which made my return less straight forward than it usually would be. John took the time to talk to me about it, the different options I would have for filing and outcomes they would have. He also gave me some projections of what filing for 2020 may look like. He said my taxes should be filed with the IRS by the end of next week and he said he would keep me informed. At this point, I feel like I can trust his word. First Class CPA and Gonzalez CPA, now known as CORE, did our taxes and made errors. The result was we had not paid enough in taxes and we had to pay penalties and interest charges due to errors in the tax filings. 0 stars is more appropriate for this horrendous firm but sadly we're stuck with the 1-5 scale. I started working with Gonzalez CPA because they were listed as one of Dave Ramsey's ELPs. When I first started with Gonzalez CPA, I thought I had finally found the perfect CPA as they assured me they had expertise in all the areas I was seeking their assistance with when it comes to tax returns. At first I started working with Hugo. I should have seen it as a red flag when all of a sudden I was working with Wesley as opposed to Hugo who specificalyl was the recommendation of Dave Ramsey. I brushed off any concerns because Wesley did get the job done despite the fact that he sometimes took way longer than is appropriate to respond to calls/emails. Couple years roll by and we find ourselves doing 2018 tax returns. For this last tax year I was given to another CPA within that firm named Nina. They bounced me from Wesley to Garret and in 2018 to Nina. I provided Nina with very detailed notes and files for her to use while preparing. So many of those instructions / files went completely unread by her and when I got the first rough draft (which wasn't provided until the week before tax day), it had so many mistakes I felt a 10 year old had prepared my tax returns. Long story short, in addition to the fact that it's hard to communicate with Nina due to her harsh accent, I demanded to be transferred mainly because of her imcompetnecy and lack of attentino to details. John Gonzalez takes over. I was hoping he would give it the attention it deserves but I was sorely mistaken. Numerous attempts to setup meetings with him failed and when I started to get really worried that there would be no time before the due date to address the numerous issues with my returns, he finally responds and tells me has already filed an extension without my knowledge.This really infurirated me because it was never told to me upfront. The way I look at it is they prioritized other returns and agreed not to really take mine seriously until after tax day. This negative review is getting a little too long so I will leave you with this. Do NOT trust John Gonzalez. He pretends to understand that tax code when it comes to critical things like ESPP (employee share purchase plan) and RSU (restricted stock unit) when he actually has NO clue what he is doing when it comes to appropriately calculating cost basis and factoring in gains already reflected on your W2 Box 1. I had to step in and save the day on my own tax returns and essentially teach John Gonzalez how to properly account for tax liability when it comes to these stock plans. I went from owing thousands of dollars to getting a refund no thanks to John. At the end of the day, I felt like Gonzalez CPA should be paying me rather than the other way around. The worst part about this entire experience, is John did not even ONCE apologize for all the delays, mistakes and his own shortcomings (as well as his lying about knowing how to handle ESPP/RSU taxes). Simulatenously my friends who I had reocmmneded to him before my experienmce were having their own horrendous experience with him as well and blamed me for ever introducing them. I finally found out why when he started working on my returns. One final plot twist in the end of my review which I belive is the cherry on top to show you just what a low quality firm this is. I receieved a CP2000 form from the IRS regarding my 2017 tax returns telling me that mistakes were made and that I owe the IRS several thousand more dollars. I reached out to John as soon I recieved the letter so he could help me root cause the source these issues that caused this. He responds telling me he will work on it. I reach out to him once a week every week up until the due date and I get a response that he's busy but will work on it next week. Due date hits, still nothing from this clown and since then he hasn't reached out to follow up. He's apparently "still about to work on it". Of course, I wasn't holding my breath to get any quality service from John and I had been working on getting a response prepared for the IRS all along. I put together all the necessary documents and filed the appropriate paperwork with the IRS to address their concerns all without any help from John my wonderful CPA who had put me in this position to begin with because again it came down to the IRS noitcing that the ESPP/RSU tax basis were incorrect as reported by my CPA. Run, don't walk away from Goznalez CPA. read more

DO NOT GO TO THIS CPA UNLESS YOU WANT TO LOSE MONEY! We went to this guy because he was Dave Ramsey's only endorsed local provider. In one year, Mr. Gonzalez took us from getting a large return to OWING $20k in taxes. A child could have done a better job in handling our taxes. Shame on us for not questioning more in that initial meeting. Once we realized we may have an issue- it took us 5 MONTHS to get a reply from him. He does not reply to emails, is never available by phone, does not return phone calls and regularly cancels and double books meetings. He is truly the worst accountant I have ever encountered. Save yourself a world of frustration (and the loss of your money) and go somewhere else. This guy is unprofessional, incompetent, unreliable, and an embarrassment to his field. read more

Worst CPA experience ever! Not only did he make a mistake filing our state tax return but he wouldn't admit it instead he assure us that everything was right even though we knew it wasn't. They pressured us into signing it anyways because they waited until the very last day before deadline ( I sent all documents to them 2 month prior deadline) and we had to pay $ 2000 that we didn't owe the state. After we paid them and they filed the wrong report they never answered any of our email and never returned any of our calls. Every time I called no one was available, they took my message but did't get back to me. In the end we had to get another CPA to fix everything (turns out there was a mistake in the federal report as well) and pay him another $400. I would never go to this place again, worst customer service and knowledge in taxes ever! read more

I have been using John Gonzalez for my personal and business returns since 2009. John is a rock star when it comes to taxes. I am self employed (and I would hate me as a client) but John and his whole staff are patient and understanding even when my hair is on fire. He is the perfect balance between aggressive on deductions but nothing shady or will get you in trouble (he tells me pigs get fat and hogs get slaughtered). They helped me when I went thru a ugly divorce. They helped me when I originally went to him and my taxes were a mess. They helped me when I waited too long to file. They take the time to explain your returns and any questions. They have reminded me to file and then to extend when I was dumb. They are great with personal as well as business taxes. They talk a good game, but when the playing starts they will let you down! Spent hours with Hugo going over our corporation, they did my QuickBooks for 2015, still they made so many errors on our IRS filing we should be getting back about $30,000!!!!! The errors were found in October 2016 and as of May 2017 they have not filed an amended return. Got a letter stating my 2014 taxes were being electronically filed in June 2015; but in October almost lost a refi on my home because they were never filed.
