Life changing. 8 years ago, I had a spinal cord compression injury from work. Since then, I have had constant neck and back pain and have barely been able to feel my first three fingers on my right hand. I was in and out of a spine rehab for years, had multiple imaging, went to both orthopedic and pain specialists, and have barely been able to exercise. My pain had been so bad these past few months that I was trying to make appointments with a neurologist and returning back to the spine rehab center. I was referred to this office by my sports massage therapist. I was easily able to make my first appointment by phone with his office staff (who are all very lovely and patient!). At my appointment, Dr. Richard and I discussed my history, XR results (XR taken during the appointment in the clinic), and his plan of action. As a nurse of 10 years, I can easily determine if I am working with a decent physician, and in this case, I immediately knew that I was in great hands. Dr. Richard was very knowledgeable, straight-forward, and thoroughly explained everything that he wanted to adjust. He then made several adjustments, and just like that, I was completely pain free and could fully feel my right hand for the first time in 8 years. I cried all the way home and could not believe I had been living in so much pain. My quality of life has improved so much. I no longer have raging pain at the end of my 12 hour shifts and can lift weights and exercise again. I got introduced to Dr. Al Richard by a friend who went there after an accident... he worked wonders on her and she swore by him.. I was skeptical because Drs. are not my thing but i did have some recurring back pain... So I went and watched a few times, then I went with her when she flew her brother in from Florida to get him treatment - his alternative was surgery and he was doing really well after a month's treatment! So I took the plunge! Dr. Al is a no-non sense guy, say it like it is, but he is patient and will explain everything but give you a realistic prognosis. I love the fact that he doesn't push any drugs on you, and really listens to what's bothering you. Visits to his office are quick an efficient. His staff is wonderful and accommodating ( I travel a lot.. and make changes last second) and he has made a world of difference in my well-being. Pretty new to Austin and in looking for a good chiropractor, I found that there are dozens and dozens to choose from. I figured I'd start with a Chiropractor that used a method/style I hadn't tried before. Dr Richard practices the Gonstead method, which impresses me as a layman to be very structured and specific compared to most of the chiropractic care I've received over the years in other cities. His knowledge and clear explanation to me of what the specific issues are and his plan to work on and correct them blew me away. I have a recurring spondylolisthesis (L5-S1 slippage) that sends me crawling into Dr. Richard's office a couple of times a year, and after just one adjustment from the good doc, I invariably am able to walk out of the office a normal healthy biped. Yesterday was no exception. I jacked my lower back skiing in New Mexico on Monday, went the same day to see a local chiro there who made things worse, flew home in severe discomfort, woke up in agony, and got in to see Dr. Richard that same day. With just a single precise and painless adjustment, he was able to undo all the nastiness the ski slope and the incompetent chiro had done to me. After leaving the office, I had the urge to buy him a huge bouquet of flowers, but didn't want to give him the wrong idea. Not only is Dr. Richard highly skilled and knowledgeable, he is very personable and always takes the time to chat with you about your condition and any concerns you have. Unlike a lot of chiros, he doesn't try to squeeze in as many appointments as your insurance will allow, rather he strives to get you pain free in as few visits as possible. You know, like a reputable and ethical professional. Other chiros should take notes. I don't look forward to my next spondy slippage (which is inevitable due to my highly active lifestyle and refusal to act my age), but I know that when it occurs, all I'll need to do is get my broken body to Dr. Richard and I'll be good as new in no time. A patient of mine was constantly singing the praises of Dr. Richard. Being born with an S-curved back, I realize that even though now I may feel as fit as a fiddle, this may not always be the case. I found Dr. Richard's Chiropractic after two terrible experience with chiropractors. After meeting the 2nd one, I had to be in bed for 4 days... I could not get up, but with great pain to the restroom and back, at least. I felt lost since they both had great reviews. I saw Dr. Ian Chiropractor on youtube from Australia who did pretty much a miracle on a young boy. No X-Rays, no nothing to figure out the exact problems going on. As it turned out, I had more than I thought I have. They just palpated, cracked my back and everything they could on me without explanation, diagnosis, health plan about the way they will solve my problems. I'm writing all this down to help you ask more questions to ask from yourself when you're picking a chiropractor than I knew when I was fetching for a new care provider. So my husband came up with the idea that maybe there are people in the U.S. like this Australian Dr. Ian Chiropractor... So we did a research and I had to realize there are more methods in chiropractic... I was surprised... I had no clue. I felt like it's the same like dentists... You go to either one and they'll help you get better. Did a research I found Gary Seghi (Gonstead diplomat) here in Austin. He just got retired a month ago and Dr. Rischard has his practice now. BTW I believe he was Dr. Seghi's chiropractor. That is a lot, since poor Dr. Seghi had a crazy accident. "He was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital, but was revived." (http://garyseghi.com/nside-magazine-article/) I bet you can imagine what kind of work they had to do together, so after reading that, I was ready to meet Dr. Richard. On our first meeting, he took the time to listen and ask. We went over pretty much my whole life. He checked my back with his equipment, checking for heat differences along my spine. He marked the tricky places and went over palpating my spine while turning me in all directions and asking me what/how do I feel. He took notes. He took X-rays. He analyzed them. I read it on the Gonstead website (http://gonstead.com/what-is-the-gonstead-clinical-studies-society/) it takes time to analyze the X-ray. And I was so happy to wait a day for that. Got info what should I do at home to make it a bit easier to deal with pain and the first adjustment to happen easier and better. So next day he came in the room and we went through my X-rays. He told me all the disturbing things he found cause me pain. He took notes on the X-rays and explained me everything. Ask me about any questions I have and he answered them all. He told me the care plan and I was ready to get adjusted first. We agreed to work on the most critical spot what keeps me in bed then so my body can focus on 1 thing at a time to heal. Logical. The first adjustment was great. He walked me through the steps, so it was not a surprise. Explained me everything before and after. I felt great. Managed to make some order in the kitchen. It was OK to stand for a while without much pain. 8-9 went down to 2 on a 1-10 scale. I was happy. :) My second adjustment was today. It was lot bigger movement today in my spine. I was surprised. Saw the doc was satisfied with the results, too. I felt much better, opened up. It was not painful anymore to stand, what was not possible 3 days before that. Today I managed to walk the dog in the morning and in the afternoon and get to my standing desk for ~2 hrs, splitting it up to smaller parts, but I was not lying between them, I was up on 2 feet... Could use some sleep later on, but it is not painful anymore to stand. What is great. Sitting in the car doesn't feel good yet, neither sitting, but step by step it'll get back to the new normal. It took years to get to this point, so it won't get back to perfect in 2 seconds. So all in all, I think Dr. Richard should start a video blog or something about his job, since he does amazing things. Last, but not least, his assistants are wonderful, kind, caring and patient. I could not wait for our tomorrow's appointment! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND HIM. In case you'd like to look for more chiropractors for comparison, please learn from my mistakes and read the rows below. Few things I wanted to write down as conclusions for myself, learning from the PREVIOUS Chiropractors BEFORE Dr. Richard. Wait for proper diagnosis and care plan in advance before you let anyone give you adjustments. (I didn't need exact dates I'll be healthy again, just an idea on the steps they want to do to get me better) Look for a doctor who requests time to ask from/about you, listen patiently and analyze my case before promising he/she can help me for sure. Until the proper diagnosis and explanations to me, that kind of promise equals empty words. Look for the time you're better/worth/same before/after adjustments. Take notes for yourself to monitor your feelings. A good doc will ask for them. read more

I have been Dr.Richards' patient and fan for over a year now. He is great and he is truly knowledgeable and compassionate. I trust him 100% because everything he has ever recommended to me has worked and I m in a lot better shape now. I have chronic issues that cannot be resolved completely, but I am out of pain, I can physically do more than ever and I will enjoy going to Dr. Richard for needed maintenance. I started going to Dr Richard about a year ago. I had been to several doctors over a span of 5 +years ( spent 1000s of dollars) for dizziness, migraines, neck pain and stress/anxiety. I was a mess & a half. My pain level before getting adjusted was an 8 based on a 10. I have osteoporosis and had chronic consistent pain for the past 4 months. I couldn't sleep and was having a hard time exercising and standing in the kitchen to cook was unbearable. I truly was starting to believe I had something else going on other than orthopedic problems. My pain in my neck had spasms and I also had a nerve causing pain in my leg and glut area on top of back pain.
