Service and staff are always amazing and hard working, interior and ambiance are beautiful, the food just doesn't do these places justice at all. What strikes me is the inflated prices; $20 for an 8 piece roll with very thinly cut slices of fish. Generosity and getting a bargain quality is not to be expected with any of these places. Made a reservation on Friday for a Sunday mealtime at 6:30. I got several texts and emails to confirm and remind me of my reservation-- we walk in at 6:29 Ann dressed to the nines and they say there's no table because our reservation is for 7:30 and then I get an email at that same time saying the same... however when I went back to my original communications, everything says 6:30. So we waited in the lobby area until they had a table. Once the reservation issue was handled, we were seated in a nice area in the restaurant and Angela began with her wonderful service! We ordered the short rib dumplings as an appetizer. They were sooo flavorful!! The dumpling itself was a great texture and the meat was juicy and moist. For our meals we order the California Roll and the Tres Amigos Roll. The California roll actually didn't have any crab in it (and I noticed their menu really didn't have any imitation crab!) but it still tasted very similar to one with crab. It did have toasted sesame seeds on it though and that added a crazy new full flavor that I enjoyed! The trees Amigos had 3 types of fish topping the roll --salmon, tuna and grouper and it had avocado & cucumber. It was okay, not bad, but not amazing. We were celebrating our anniversary with Gong so they gave us a complimentary dessert which had caramel ice cream and a lava chocolate cake. It was very good! We got a similar dessert at one of the steakhouses, but this one was a notch above! We were just about to leave Gong then ran into friends and were seated (at the same table lol) with them and stayed another hour an a half with Angela helping our friends. Hubs got the seafood red Thai curry, it was delicious! On the spicy side tho so be ware. I got the beef filet, it was good but definitely on the smaller side... We eat Asian food frequently in the U.S., so we were unsure of what to think about going to Gong. I think we didn't order the right things, because we left feeling like it was mediocre for the price. Crispy Shrimp (380 pesos) - think of these as rock shrimp, they were good. I would order again, but the portion was small. More of an app. Mixed Yakimeshi ($360) - fried rice with beef, shrimp, chicken, smoked bacon and vegetables. Crispy Noodles (270 pesos) - wok stir fry carrots, zucchini, onions, bean sprouts over crispy ramen noodles. Small portion. You need a reservation for this place during busy times. The last place I expected good food is an Asian place in Mexico. I have to admit, I could not have been more wrong. I'll give you the exact quote from my SO. "The fresh fish you just got in the ocean had been my favorite meal ever, until we ate here." The Seared Ahi was unlike any I have ever had before. What an amazing mouthful of flavor. It was definitely an appetizer sized dish but really set the meal off on the right foot. I LOVED the Crispy Grouper with Tamarind sauce. It was crispy, flaky, flavorful and a great portion size. I was tempted to lick the plate clean it was so good. However, the Black Cod that she had was a whole other level of food. First off, I have been trying to get her to try asparagus grilled for a few months not to no avail, after trying theirs, she's begging me to do it for her. The Star of the plate though was definitely that cod. A generous piece of cod, perfectly marinated and so flaky that just picking up the layers with chopsticks allowed all the unctuous essence to hit your mouth all at once. I did not want to taste anything else after these amazing dishes but when they place their lava cake and vanilla ice cream in front of you, it's hard to say no. Even at $300 for our meal, we would definitely use that as our treat dinner for the week again. Now, if Vidanta could get their act together it would be perfect place to stay. read more

Got food poisoning :(. If you are going, I recommend staying away from the sushi and sticking with cooked meals. Also insanely expensive for just okay food. Didn't have the wine we wanted and said we had to pay extra for a different bottle. Didn't let us try the wines before purchasing either. If you are going to mexico just get mexican food they really struggle to do other cuisines. It was also so unbelievably cold so make sure to bring a jacket! Had dinner here with my wife while staying at Vidanta. Had a light meal of appetizers and a couple sushi rolls. Wife had vegetable tempura which was good but served room temp. Tempura needs to be hot to be great. I had the marinated cod lettuce rolls which were flavorful and tasty, the the cod was in tiny chunks and sparse. Would have been very good if the fish was a reasonable portion. The sushi rolls were just OK, not what I'd expect from a high end resort. Gong was the first place my wife and I ate at when we first visited Mayan Palace resort. My wife and really loved the Asian fusion cuisine. We stopped in for dinner last night with another couple. We had a reservation and we were promptly seated as we arrived on time.. First of all, from an aesthetic standpoint, this is a beautiful restaurant. High ceilings, just the right lighting, not noisy but not quiet. Just a very relaxing place to be. Our waiter was way beyond fantastic, he attended to our every needs and was very personable. I neglected to ask for his name as I would have sent a letter of praise. For an appetizer, we ordered tempura vegetables and shrimp. For dinner, I ordered "California Rolls and Fried Noodles and Shrimp". I have to give the tempura vegetables and shrimp a low score, I am used to having my tempura vegetable with a light crunchy batter, Gong's version was a bit more doughy and dense. But that is the only negative from a cuisine standpoint. My California rolls were excellent and came with fresh ginger and wasabi. My fried noodles were to die for. My husband and I went for dinner at Gong while staying at the Vidanta with his family. It was just the two of us and I wanted to try everything! We started the meal with the kobe beef yakiniku appetizer. We both absolutely loved it and tried so hard to eat it slowly so we could savour every bite. The beef had a citrus taste and was peppery and so tender. It was incredible. We then shared the spicy salmon maki roll. Sushi is by far my favourite food so I was so looking forward to it. I was not disappointed. It was so spicy, by not overly so, and the portions were wonderful. Next, we each had a salmon nigiri. I could have had ten! It was so tender. We dipped it in the lime soya sauce that was provided on the table and it was perfect. For our main course we shared the peking duck. Our server, Jaime, had recommended it to us. I'm a sucker for meals that change things up and was so happy when I heard we got to enjoy the duck two ways. First, Jaime brought the duck in front of us and made us little pancake spring rolls with cilantro and plum sauce inside. They were amazing. I could have eaten way more than two! Then the duck is taken away and made into a stir fry, which was also very delicious. If you're visiting the vidanta, definitely try Gong. Let me start by saying that the food is great. It's not necessarily a "wow-factor," but it is pretty good. I was a little disappointed that I was told that the manager wanted to give me a special deal on a bottle of wine (40% off) making it $30, but when I looked up the bottle online, it was much cheaper than $30 to begin with. When I mentioned this to the server (gently, I might add,) he was a little rude and told me that I must have a bad source (I checked 3 websites on google that said the same thing..) no matter, I just ordered a single glass of something else and it was fine. My husband had a rusty nail and said it was good, but not amazing. For an appetizer we had the BBQ short rib dumplings. They were awesome! For our main dish we got the meaty fried rice and the noodles yakimeshi. We mixed them (no shame in our game,) and it was really good. Not out of this world, but for an Asian style place in a secluded resort in Mexico... For dessert we had the platano con dulce y helado. Basically a banana egg roll with a scoop of passion fruit ice cream and caramel drizzle. It was tasty, but it was a very small potion. Probably a good thing.
