A wonderful notion, made slightly curious when it is learned that the words were spoken by a water rat called 'Ratty'. To a mole. Called 'Mole'. Making me think that Kenneth Grahame might have been prone to adding a goodly dose of herbaceous material to the wind in his willows. Golf shops are a bit like that. You will see people simply wandering around, chatting, picking things up and putting them down. Dreaming that a Titleist Pro V X will give them extra distance and they will suddenly be able to suck a ball back to the pin even though they rarely hit the green. Thats the thing about golf, everyone has hit a great shot, and everyone thinks they can do it again. Its the exquisite pain of playing well all the while knowing that disaster is just a shot away. The blokes in this shop are cool. They don't have the superior attitude that can spoil a wander around the shop. So far everyone I've spoken with is Irish which gives them a flying start. They are not going to annoy you, but if you want to know something they will tell you. They match prices with other places and even on line stuff - sometimes. I recommend this place because its in the city and, even if you dont buy anything, its a nice way to spend ten minutes dreaming of what might be. 'Behold the Golfer. He ventures out full of anticipation, and returns home full of drink and the truth is not in him.'

I have walked this course and it's not easy. The fairways and greens are generally well maintained and last minute bookings are possible at times. I will probably end up here at some point again. It's conveniently located and easy to get to. At the moment they have mid week green specials so it's quite reasonable to golf here. Some of the holes are really tricky and have amazing views across the harbour. Staff are friendly and helpful and it's an ok place to get a game in the city.

The venue was really nice and held around 100 guests or so. Canapes to start with followed by a buffet style dinner and ending on Lebanese sweets and birthday cake. Food was not too shabby. It was nice getting fed rather than the typical "bar tab" only style 21st's. Small dance floor up the front for anyone ready to show off their Mick Jagger moves (ok so they are probably too young to know any Mick Jagger moves). It was dark by the time I got there but I'm sure the water view would be a fantastic backdrop for any daytime event.

It is a great test of golf, and offers a fair reward for those that can strike the ball well and manage their game. One has to pick your shot as much as you have to execute it. Thus, the Australian Golf Club hits my small town club for six (wrong sporting reference?). Australia's oldest club, the Australian Golf Club's grounds in Rosebery are beautiful. Their bistro is framed by glass walls that overlook these expansive green grasses and the food is well above average, the team of chefs here knowing how to please and masterfully creating spreads of fresh seafood, extravagant sushi, Mediterranean dishes, glazed hams, roasts cooked to perfection and an amazing repertoire of desserts. The friendly and personable staff deliver outstanding service and on most visits you will be serenaded by the twinkling keys of their foyer's grand piano, played beautifully by any given member of the club. You must be a member to enjoy these stunning grounds and that's not an easy task. Founded in 1882, The Australian Golf Club is a members only private club. Membership numbers are strictly limited and applicants must be nominated by an existing member. What's more, this exclusive membership comes at an equally exclusive price.

Fitting golf around work is never easy and so swinging in somewhere quite so convenient on the the way in or out is a good option. The course itself is reasonable - quite short, but hills that provide some added challenge and a notable water feature on the 6th. Some of the greens are a bit furry and the bunkers could do with some high-tide sand wash, but this is a public course and you're only paying $19 for the privilege. To reach the Clubhouse, you have to navigate a back lane off Park Avenue, and the carpark is squeezy at the best of times. The Pro-shop sells all the necessities, and lots of kids learn their fairway basics on the practice area across the ninth hole (yep, be careful here). Above the Pro-shop club rooms and a function centre are blessed with terrific views across the northern suburbs - especially beautiful at night when the lights are on.

Some of the holes aren't so much holes as they are sylvan glades; I half expect some of the trees to start talking Ent-style on several of them. The first hole is a doozy . . . right in front of the clubhouse with everyone watching you, you tee off from an eagle's eyrie high up in the sky with the fairway stretching out below you like a magic carpet. Don't duff the tee shot else all the members will laugh at you. With that said, if you nail it and it sails straight and true up into the stratosphere, you can hold your backswing in place while a chorus of appreciative sea-lion grumbles of approval roll over you from the peanut gallery. Man that's a good feeling.
