Membership is worth it if you're looking long term, keen to play regularly, and happy to deal with the 'clubby' stuff - lots of which has been around for a hundred years (like this club). Nine fancy new holes make up the back nine - flat but with the added challenge of plenty of water hazards and glass-fast greens. Nine renovated holes make up the front nine, due to re-open in Autumn 2012. While the course is partly closed, membership numbers are restricted and it's not always easy to get peak time tee-slots, but things look a lot easier once the full eighteen holes are back in play. Very professional golf shop staff - also available for lessons though not clinics while the facilities are depleted. And the clubhouse ... built originally in 1924 it's grand and elegant, posing handsomely above the practice greens. Although members bemoan the decline in the social side of the club, which in its heyday saw functions and get-togethers every weekend, it's now a popular function venue, and the odd site of a bride strolling over the fairway for photos is not uncommon. Golf is open to non-members - though it's more expensive than public clubs - and functions can be arranged by both members and the public.

Well established, the grass is lush in the rough and perfect for divot-taking on the main. From time to time the heavily-subscribed course does shut bits off to effect maintenance, but they do their best to offer a genuine 18-hole run if that's what you've paid for. Competitions are on for members during the week, so check tee-times before you rock up. The pro-shop, on the corner of Condamine Street and Kentwell Road, is well-stocked (though I curse that their great value range is not stocked in my size!!). The gentleman that runs it consistently friendly and welcoming; the fact that I am a member elsewhere yet he still remembers my name from my few visits is very telling.

I have played here a number of times and it's a tough golf course with ball eating bush and water…read moreobstacles :-)) I think I have lost many a ball here in the past :-) It's a hilly course built into terraces and if you don't like hilly courses best to stay away from this one or rent an electric buggy like we did. I have walked this course and it's not easy. The fairways and greens are generally well maintained and last minute bookings are possible at times. I will probably end up here at some point again. It's conveniently located and easy to get to. At the moment they have mid week green specials so it's quite reasonable to golf here. Some of the holes are really tricky and have amazing views across the harbour. Staff are friendly and helpful and it's an ok place to get a game in the city.

I attended a 21st birthday party at the Golf Club (yes I'm still young and hip enough to be…read morepartying with uni students *woot woot*). The venue was really nice and held around 100 guests or so. Canapes to start with followed by a buffet style dinner and ending on Lebanese sweets and birthday cake. Food was not too shabby. It was nice getting fed rather than the typical "bar tab" only style 21st's. Small dance floor up the front for anyone ready to show off their Mick Jagger moves (ok so they are probably too young to know any Mick Jagger moves). It was dark by the time I got there but I'm sure the water view would be a fantastic backdrop for any daytime event.

That so many public access golf courses exist in Australia this close to town is a luxury. This…read moreone, however, is not one of the best. Sure, it's only nine holes and not hugely expensive to play, but is seems to be perpetually under renovation or under water! Staff are friendly and the pro shop has basic equipment at pretty good prices, and I do like the idea of marketing "nine holes of golf and a schooner" as a package - nothing like a stiff drink to improve the accuracy of your golf swing. Check back in once the changes are complete, but meanwhile Warringah or Cammeray are better options.
