Great Bavarian favorites. Beer of course. And the owner and staff are amazing and friendly.

They said the next available seating would be an hour, so I happily took the 8pm. I was shocked to see how empty the restaurant was, though when I arrived! I opted for the 5 course tasting menu which was the smaller of the two. Glad I did because their portions are quite big here for a Chef's Tasting Menu. The food was good, but no standouts of the night. There was nothing in particular about the entire meal that impressed me. However, the dishes were colorful and beautiful! What I REALLY enjoyed was the wine pairing. Each glass complimented each dish perfectly. If only they served it in a timely manner... so not a Michelin experience, IMO. Service was all over the place. I wasn't really checked on and one dish a server just came by and took it away without asking If I was done... and no, I was not done. They didn't really time my wine pairing with the meals which put me off. Not sure how Michelin rated restaurants in Germany go, but I was not really impressed with this one. Decent food, not so great service. If someone asked me to go back, I wouldn't be opposed to it... but certainly not a Michelin experience I'd recommend to anyone... just a restaurant to go to for a decent meal.

Starter: Alsatian Goose Liver - Very rich and combinations were spot on. Bread that went with it was housemade and really tasty Main: Veal - cooked perfectly but the highlight for me in this dish was the eggplant. Tender and flavorful. Spice rub/topping on the top was great. Dessert: Went with the cheese. Selection of at least 15 cheeses. You're likely to find several you'll like. Price was reasonable for a Michelin star place. Great place for a formal business lunch or a romantic dinner. The restaurant also has a patio if you'd like to dine in open air. Not on such a busy road that it would be noisy and the hotel has columns and a courtyard that separates the restaurant from the street.

The 1st time I went here I had a quail which was delicious and enjoyed a crisp Riesling wine. For dessert I had the crème brûlée was pretty good. That time I went as a party of 3, but it was good we added a couple to make a party of 5. The next time I had the seafood bouillabaisse with some honey chamomile tea. The soup was delicious and the tea was presented well (tasted fine). Everyone appeared to enjoy their meal quite a bit. I tried the beef which was also delicious while the pork was a bit dry (still tasty). Overall, I highly recommend this place for a nice dinner (I'd totally have a romantic date here).

I was pleasantly surprised that when we were able to get a table without reservations at one of my favorite bistros in Heidelberg, on a Thursday night at that. Firstly rule, if you want to eat at Le Coq is make a reservation. Being able to walk in and get a table is like trying to win the Lotto, it doesn't happen often but you are very happy when it does. Naturally, the place was packed and we sipped a very good Sauvignon Blanc from the open wine list and chatted, while waiting for our main courses. Our food came and both my friend, J., and I realized that our fish with champagne sauce and spinach was terribly undersalted. No problem, we both grabbed the salt shaker a few times and added some salt to our meal. No complaining going on here, just a few joking comments about the cook definantly not being in love. Time to pay and the very nice waiter asks us how the food was people he asked am I supposed to say good if it is undersalted. Hmmmm?! So we mentions that the fish entree could have used more salt. Is that really so terrible? Hmmmm?! Didn't think so until the manager came over smelling like stale smoke and berates, yes berates, us for my comment. Telling me that I know nothing about making delicate champagne sauce and feeding 100's of people a night. (Hey, who knows maybe the other 100 people thought the fish was undersalted. Do I know?) I gently try to let him know that I was asked how the food was and mentioned it was undersalted, no crime on my part and hey, I am still the customer and paying a good EUR 20,00 for my dish. Do I deserve this kind of attitude from the manager? So anyways, now that I have vented, I feel better. I still love the french bistro Le Coq in Neuenheim, but I hope the manager has a better day the next time I eat there and the cook uses a bit more salt. Hey, but that is just my opinion.

The weather was beautiful for sitting outside. I wish I had gotten our server's name because he was outstanding. Friendly, witty, and willing to help navigate the menu - he made our dining experience even better. We started with a couple of local wines that were amazing - a red and a rosé. Some bread and butter came to our table with our escargot starter and side salad. The bread and starter were delicious. Our snails were hot and garlicky with plenty of juice to sop up. The side salad was also very tasty and fresh. For our mains I went with the Schnitzelbank Platter and my lady went with the Pepper Schnitzel. My platter came with a local delicacy called saumagen, as well as roasted pork, sausage, roasted potatoes, and sauerkraut. The saumagen was the highlight for me. Our server was also excited we got it. It is a local offering consisting of various meats and other items wrapped up in a stomach and served as a loaf-style meat. The pepper schnitzel was also outstanding - the sauce was indeed peppery, but it didn't smother the schnitzel, which was breaded nicely and not dry, as some schnitzels can be. And after all that food, still, an apple strudel. This was so worth it. I don't even like sweets in the USA, but in Europe, they are something else. This was something else. We had a lot of great meals on our trip, but this was probably the best. Not just for the food, but for the overall experience, it's easy to see why this is the shining star in Heidelberg.

The food was outstanding authentic German cuisine with a twist. The garlic Schnitzel is truly made for garlic lovers like me! The mushroom schnitzel had a flavor explosion when it hits your pallet. Of the four dinners during our trip, we probably enjoyed this one the most given our connection with our server and the fun/upbeat atmosphere of the restaurant. We had to start with the classic French Onion Soup au Gratin, which was served with a thick layer of cheese and was piping hot. Great way to warm up on a rainy evening. Our server suggested I try the Shrimp Salad with green beans & avocado. It seemed like an odd combination of ingredients, but oh was I wrong. All the flavors and textures popped. The butterfly shrimp were incredible. As someone who loves Mussels, I met my match with the entrée size bowl served in creamy white wine sauce and with french fries. I made a gallant attempt to finish it, but fell short. It was a feast and cost only 34 Euros. My daughter met her match with the French Minced Potato Casserole au Gratin. Super rich and delish. The portion was huge, almost appropriate for family style dining. I wish I could bring this restaurant back to the United States.

I just always call out when seafood is not over-cooked. The ambiance is elegant, warm and luxurious. The service is experienced and informed. My only complaint, although small, was the wine pour. My husband does not drink much and I don't want to drink a whole bottle by myself, so we ordered by the glass. The pour was tiny; more like a pairing pour. I was going to mention it, when he poured again. So, I thought maybe it was a regional difference in service. When the bill came, they charged for every tiny pour. I don't know if this is a house policy or if the waiter made that decision. It didn't ruin the evening, it was just the only disappointment. You decide if that matters.
