Whether or not you live in San Mateo, you must visit this store. I call it a "Hidden Gem", but its official name is Golden Moon Gallery! Really, I must have passed by the window of this store a hundred times before, and although I had always found it interesting, I never had time to go inside. Until this past week, when I went to purchase my favorite bread at the artisan bakery on Third street; and, this time despite my usual busy on-the-run life style, instead of glancing with admiration through the next door's window, I finally went into the "Golden Moon Gallery". What a nice surprise! I found myself surrounded by beauty and good taste all around. The store setting is exquisitely designed and adorned by original art pieces made in different mediums and by artists from all over the United States. I was warmly greeted by Ellen, who along with her husband owns and runs the gallery. Being both artists themselves and familiar with contemporary quality art explained the reasons behind their beautiful taste and unique collection. I would try to explain more but I want to invite you all to visit this hidden gem gallery in person so you too will be able to enjoy discovering this place as much as I did. An intriguing and delightful addition to downtown San Mateo! Amidst a glut of ever changing restaurants, Golden Moon Gallery stands out with its unique and whimsical array of home goods, jewelry, artwork and collectibles. Set in what used to be a grand house on Third Avenue, the collection is an obvious labor of love that sparkles under crystal chandeliers. Every artist, every piece, every design is special and has a story behind it. I walked by Golden Moon on my way to and from work when it was closed before finally getting there on a weekend. It feels like one of those shops out of time. A Gothic feel, honoring the beauty and mystery of nature, it has a slightly witchy-poo feeling straight out of Bell, Book and Candle. Golden Moon is delightful. The owners, Nick and Ellen, have curated a beautiful collection of pieces both for display and practical use, both their own work and that of local artists, and it skews eclectic and unusual. We walked in during a browse through San Mateo looking for wedding rings, and found a wonderful collection by Screech and Howl, a talented husband and wife team of local jewelry artists. Though none of the rings on display were suitable for us, Ellen facilitated our contact with the artists, and shepherded our commission all the way through to completed wedding rings. Ellen and Nick were the epitome of charm and above and beyond customer service in making this happen. We are delighted to have found Golden Moon, and hope to go back soon for many more beautiful shiny things to add to our lives. read more

Definitely a cool new spot that's a great addition to the neighborhood. I haven't seen any other art galleries in San Mateo quite like this that specializes in handcrafted art and goods from all over the place. It has really amazing pieces, and the vibe inside is so friendly and welcoming. It had some sculptures, paintings, jewelry, prints, a little bit of everything. I don't know how often they'll keep getting new things but I'm excited to keep going back to find out. read more

I bought a couple of unique jewelry pieces today after my sister had gifted me with stunning earrings from here for my birthday. I was in awe of all the beauty in the store- I could stay there for hours! Both Nick and Ellen are friendly, responsive, and professional. It was a dream to work with them during each stage of the planning, from securing the spot to arranging the space to suit the event. In addition, this gallery is packed with beautiful and unique pieces--from paintings to ceramics to jewelry--that you wouldn't be able to find anywhere else in San Mateo, or in our neighboring towns.
