An intriguing and delightful addition to downtown San Mateo! Amidst a glut of ever changing restaurants, Golden Moon Gallery stands out with its unique and whimsical array of home goods, jewelry, artwork and collectibles. Set in what used to be a grand house on Third Avenue, the collection is an obvious labor of love that sparkles under crystal chandeliers. Every artist, every piece, every design is special and has a story behind it. I walked by Golden Moon on my way to and from work when it was closed before finally getting there on a weekend. It feels like one of those shops out of time. A Gothic feel, honoring the beauty and mystery of nature, it has a slightly witchy-poo feeling straight out of Bell, Book and Candle. You almost expect Kim Novak to come out of the back, stroking Pyewacket, to show you around.

Nice gallery. The items in their gallery doesn't match our taste, but the owners were great.

I knew in advance that on Thursdays (2nd & 4th weeks only), the public street parking in front of the building was off limits for street sweeping/no parking between 7am-11am, so I got very lucky pulling up in front at 11am sharp. Nice. Easy walk. The Foster Museum was very simple, decent, positive, and relaxing environment filled with gorgeous nature views/sketches/watercolor artworks by the U.K. artist, Tony Foster. Good feeling here. Free admissions and good customer service staffs. You can just walk in or register online. There's a tiny gift area not far from the public restrooms. I signed the guestbook at the end of my walk. Good place to hang around/includes unlimited paper, paper/pencils/samples/etc. If you like to sketch and get some creative inspirations, all the nature artworks in the gallery is definitely a good place to start. Not huge, but perfectly quite and calm for art lovers. You can request for an orientation and/or tour as desired. Great first impression during first visit. It's the positive feeling I get from observing the energy and various colorful artworks. Simple and stress-free. Good value/free admissions is totally worth the 1-2 hours here. They also host art classes too, but I will need to take time to browse around online. Good vibes. Staffs are friendly inside. Hidden place. Love it.

Very nice family owned frame shop in San Carlos…read more I took two pieces of art to be framed. One was an older piece already framed (in a dated frame for my current esthetic) and one was a similar piece I never got around to framing. There is a large selection of frames and mats to pick from. Ron helped me pick a frame and mat that would work for both pieces. He wasn't pushy with his suggestions and he understood I wanted a clean modern look. (It was nice change from other shops I've gone to in Los Angeles and San Jose where the framers were very assertive with their opinions.). Another thing that really stood out for me is that the art pieces are slightly different in size. I thought that they were the same size but he showed me by measuring. That meant to get a symmetrical look he had to do the same size frame but different size mats. I was worried it would look odd but how he did the double mat and floated the art looks amazing. The old piece had a certificate glued to the back of the paper. It wouldn't come off but he photo copied it for me and put it on the back of the piece. I hadn't asked him to do that and it was a pleasant surprise. I would highly HIGHLY recommend this shop. It might be a little more than those chain shops but the care and attention you receive is more than worth the few extra dollars. I'm so excited to hang my newly framed pieces!

I found Thrasher's on Yelp with high ratings. In addition to taking the project to Ron, I also…read morebrought photos of the wall where I intend to hang the frame showing the nearby other pictures. Showed Ron a couple of other in-house pictures that are framed. That was enough, Ron was off-to-the-races!!! He started trying some mat boards and then he went to get some frame candidates. I said nothing as I could see he was in the "artist zone" and I didn't want to break his concentration. It was fun watching him trying things. He quickly zeroed into a couple of candidate choices; either would be great choices. I picked my favorite and placed the order. I am extremely happy with the results!!!! Of course, my next project will go to Thrasher's Framing!!!
