I had hand Surgery and got a referral from my surgeon for hand therapy. Golden Gate Hand Therapy is outstanding! I have been seeing my therapist Ezelle For maybe 15 times. The sessions are 45 minutes each. And this is what she does: First, I get paraffin and Hot towel wraps on both hands. Then she uses ultrasound for all the stiff and inflamed joints on both hands. In addition, she uses a hard plastic scraping type tool to further Help create more flexibility. And then she massages the fingers and stretches them, which can sometimes Ache a little bit. But I can tell that it is "Good" pain, and she is very much in touch with what I can comfortably handle. So, this is why I gave them five stars. I don't think most 10 therapy places would use paraffin wax and ultrasound as far as I know. I highly recommend Golden Gate Hand Therapy and my hand therapist Ezelle. read more

I hate to do this but... we made an appointment with Ai and showed up only to find the office on Calif st closed with no notice. We scheduled again with Ai for the Union st location and showed up to find our appointment was not on the therapists schedule, this happened not once but twice. If you can actually get in to see them I am sure it would be a nice experience but we had a summer of waiting for nothing and we have to move on to a different type of treatment. I had a bad bicycle accident resulting a broken wrist that required a cast and extensive hand therapy. I was given a list of hand therapy facilities by my doctor. After calling several places on the list, only Golden Gate Hand Therapy called back promptly. I was given an appointment right away to see Melanie. During my first appointment and evaluation, I was very impressed by her expertise and caring demeanor. Melanie answered all my questions thoroughly and patiently. I was surprised to find out that she actually discussed with my hand orthopedic surgeon about my conditions prior to my appointment, so she could provide the best care during my recovery. Later I learned that Melanie is the founder and owner of GGHT who manages an excellent team of exceptional hand therapists. Your call yesterday Melanie was almost 2 months too late. I have been without care for my hand because of your office's lack of follow through and lack of care for what happened. I was unable to get additional treatments because of your office's lack of follow through. You started the delayed phone conversation with how busy you are and gave excuses for the poor handling of me and my case the last time I was in your office. That was not helpful and I honestly don't know why you bothered calling me. It was obvious you had no regrets in the handling of my case. It was a one sided conversation. All people deserve to be seen and heard. I was not, and in fact, you knew I wanted to speak to you that day, as I asked when I first entered the office. You stood next to me and the new OT that day at the paraffin table, in silence, and did not once make eye contact with me, smile or acknowledge me, knowing I asked to speak to you. I do believe it was based on preconceived issues that have nothing to do with me personally. I did nothing to warrant the treatment I received and I tried to improve what was happening, recognizing I was having trouble making appointments. What did you do? When I asked to speak to you all those weeks ago, that's when you should have called me. My first request to speak to you after my second appt. Had you called me back back then and I would have known how you felt, I would never have made the third appointment that prompted this review. Perhaps asking questions versus pressing your agenda would have made things better. I hope you take a moment to reflect on what you know was requested twice, acknowledge how long it took to follow through with the call request and contemplate how you would have felt in my shoes with circumstances out of your control. Life isn't always neat and clean edges but we always have a choice in how we choose to handle what comes our way and how we encounter those along the way. I have gone to Golden Gate for many years. The people have always been nice. Today I went back after almost 2 years and I found the place brighter and much warmer. My first encounter was with Luis when I made the appointment, what a great personality he has. so friendly and out going. And very helpful, Meeting him this morning was very nice. I liked him. My therapist was Annie. She was super nice, extremely helpful and so knowledgeable. She took the time to listen to my concerns. And recommended alternatives to what I was asking for. I visited Golden Gate Hand Therapy for chronic wrist pain that I had been experiencing for four months. While I found the therapists to be friendly and engaging, there were some areas where I felt the therapy could be improved. One of my main concerns was the prescribed exercises, which felt like a blanket approach rather than being specific to my condition. I had initially diagnosed myself with tendinopathy, but an MRI later revealed dorsal synovitis instead. When I asked about the exercises and differences between the two conditions, I was told they were "pretty much the same", which I found misleading and unhelpful. During the sessions, I also found that there was a lot of downtime filled with passive heated wax and hand massaging. While these activities were relaxing, I was unsure whether they were useful for treating my wrist condition. Furthermore, some of the recommendations made by the therapists seemed to have low evidence of efficacy or even contradicted the advice of my orthopedist. For example, there isn't much research evidence for the modalities they employed (e.g. ultrasound). What really bothered me was I was advised to not get a cortisone shot due to risk of tendon rupture or weakening. I ultimately decided to go with my orthopedist's recommendation and this completely resolved my symptoms within 1-2 weeks and has continued to give me full functionality of my wrist. From my read of literature, the risk of tendon rupture with a single injection is very low, and it is an appropriate treatment for inflammatory pathologies such as synovitis. Much of the evidence for avoiding injections relates to tendinopathies, which are more commonly caused by degeneration rather than inflammation. I understand there is not a clear consensus on this topic and clinical decision making can be subjective, but I felt that it was irresponsible and potentially misleading advice. On a positive note, the therapists were very nice and engaging during our sessions. I believe that the exercises themselves do work, although they could be better tailored to the condition. However, I felt that I could have achieved similar results with my own regimen as long as I had a way of tracking progress and didn't overdo it. Of course this is not the case for everyone and GGHT could still be a valuable option for those seeking more structure and guidance. I'm overall grateful that my symptoms resolved, and I do believe in the main idea of PT - that exercise promotes healing. But I was uncomfortable with some of the advice that I received during my sessions, which I felt could have been misleading and/or even harmful. I want to make it clear that I'm not trying to discourage anyone from seeking treatment at GGHT - I just want to share my own experiences. read more

My fingers tendon was severely pulled and I thought it would heal itself like anything and after months of living in sensitivity pain I finally saw a doctor and he kept looking at me like... why ... why did you not come earlier lol He sent me to Golden Gate Hand Therapy where I met lovely Danielle Conroe who looked at me like... why... why didnt you come earlier lol I was ready to accept my fingers condition if it meant I couldt workout anymore during recovery but thank God Danielle informed me it would be ok to workout so long I wore the splint she made. She made the best comfortable splints for me in a way I could take on and off easily and type and work and workout just fine. She went out of her way to check up and asked me take photos and send updates all the time. She did this out of her way cause she genuinely loves helping others and even found ways to save me a lot of fees and costs due to my situation. I truly appreciated her care and find it unique and if you saw youtube videos called "faith in humanity restored" she'd be one of them in there lol. Today Im near 100% and was my last necessary visit. I will be 100% with just a little more stretching and exercises no problem. My finger is back and Im able to workout hard and honestly I NEVER THOUGHT I WOULD HAVE THIS LEVEL OF RECOVERY. But its looking like its going to point where nothing was ever injured kind of deal. This review is ridiculously long overdue. Quite simply, this place saved the mobility in my right hand. I nearly lost a finger breaking up a dog fight in December of 2021. I spent a weekend in the hospital after emergency hand surgery, and I was facing a pretty lengthy recovery. Melanie from Golden Gate Hand Therapy responded to me within an hour of leaving a voicemail after my surgeon and insurance helped me locate physical therapy providers. Not only is every therapist I saw there a rockstar, but when my insurance was difficult with the claims, Melanie spent (literally) hours of her time to help me sort it out. Special shout-out to the office manager who was super nice and helpful with all my scheduling. Melanie even got my insurance to extend my visits to them when I needed to take time to travel east to visit family. I highly recommend Golden Gate Hand Therapy! read more

Sent my records and paperwork a week ahead, apparently to the manager of the clinic. However when I arrived the front desk secretary doesn't have it and I have to send it to her again, so her boss "doesn't have to keep forwarding it to me." Then 8 minutes later when she's done chatting with and scheduling another patient, she finally gets back to me, and acts like this is all my fault. She becomes very terse. The whole room is open with no walls, like an open office. It is somehow full of only women and echoes with voices everywhere of all the clients and clinicans. The only "privacy" afforded is by ikea shelves. Several dogs are in the room. Occasional barks emit. Someone is eating lunch in middle of room. Someone asks loudly, "Ok where do I put this...?" Eventually I'm led to a desk and left with my hand in an ice pack and another hand to do some grip exercises. Then they forgot about me. Eventually I left. I never came back. They never noticed or called me that I know of. FWIW this happened over a year (or two?) ago but I never posted the review at the time as I was feeling too overwhelmed. This is just the experience I had when I went there. YMMV read more

Shame that they don't bother returning phone calls. I've gone here in the past for treatments, contacting them whenever there's a flare up or issue. I recently had a pretty bad accident to my right hand that requires me to get physical therapy for recovery so I called Golden Gate since it's a) close and b) I've loved the service in the past. Despite leaving two messages, including one saying that I had already called once and hadn't received a callback, no one's contacted me. I only give a place two chances, I don't have time to keep chasing them down when they can't be bothered to get back to me, so I'm going to find another therapist. Super disappointed though. I would have happily gone for twice weekly appointments here as I'd had great experiences in the past, but I'll take the time to find another clinic that actually wants me as a patient. Golden Gate Hand Therapy is simply the best for hand and elbow physical therapy out there. Melanie, Grace, Mary, and all the rest helped me recover far past what I and my doctor expected, and became like family to me over the past 2 years. I had a severe elbow break in a July 2016 bike accident (tire stuck in cable car tracks) - a terrible triad plus torn ligaments on both sides. I ended up going through a first surgery to fix the bones, a second to do a manipulation under anesthesia, and a third to clean out scar tissue. I went to GG Hand Therapy for physical therapy 3x/week for the first 6 months, then 2x/week for the next 6, then 1x/week for the next 6, and finally 1x/2 weeks for the final 6. That long of a recovery wouldn't have been easy had it not been for all of them. They were all thoughtful, caring, and well trained in helping me get back to health. The open office layout also meant that you got to interact with all of them, which made it a pleasure to go instead of a chore. I just started seeing Agnes and Melanie at Golden Gate Hand Therapy a couple weeks ago, and I look forward to my upcoming appointments. They're warm, welcoming, and genuinely interested in helping me. After a pretty disappointing visit to an orthopedic surgeon (Yelp review to come, btw), I sought out physical therapy to help relieve my aching hands, forearms, and elbows. Having an... umm... let's say, unconventional left arm, my right upper limb has to endure an extra burden in my daily 10+ hours of computer use, and my left arm lacks the strength and endurance to keep up (this is also why I haven't been Yelping much lately). It may not seem like it to many, but our hands endure a lot of strain. Typing, for example, is already an arduous task. With a congenital abnormality of the arm and hand, it doesn't get any easier (it's actually a lot harder). While my left arm is unfortunately forever limited to a relatively low upper threshold of function and strength, the physical therapists at Golden Gate Hand Therapy are successfully expanding my ability closer to that threshold. In doing so, they're also brightening up my outlook on life. They teach me exercises I wouldn't think to do on my own, send me home with the equipment to do them with, and provide invaluable insight into the common activities that can lead to all sorts of problems down the road if not avoided (we're talking posture, positioning, etc.). Without going to hand therapy here, I'd probably become a hunchback by the time I'm 35. Go ahead and try it out. For your hands! For your health! read more

Went there or several months due to my fingers. Therapist was fine but not a practice. They do operate as typical medical office to remind you of you appointments, you have to remind yourself. When I happen to one day get there show up was told I was too early for an appt. and told them I might not make it back on time since they do not have have any future appointments after a month. A called 30 minutes before the time and said I I was stuck on traffic. Same before I left I was reiterated that I will be hit with a no show fee of $75.00 regardless if I did show there earlier just on a wrong time but they won't reschedule it, Kelly the office manager was also not there that there that day too. And since I left my job since so I have to pay it out of pocket. They are also very good in sending you statements which I have been co-paying too what is not covered by my PPO who paid them several thousands as they do not accept secondary from - Medical insurance coverage. read more

ALL the therapists and staff are amazing! Super helpful and friendly. The whole experience was awesome. I had a ulna fracture with placed hardware and screws and was always scared that I wouldn't be able to do push ups or plank again. After 2 months of PT and home exercises I was able to regain range of motion in my forearm and strength to do push's up, planks and other go back to weights! The massage they do is so good and helps push the fluid toward your heart! And they do parafin wax heat treatment, hammer exercises, squeezeballs, therapy putty and more! At the end they also put cold pack to finish it off. My experience with the front was also great, super organized and nice when rescheduling appointments!!! read more

Went to Golden Gate for an injury to my finger for about 6 visits. We went over 3 exercises on my first visit, a fourth on my second visit, then that was it. I would return, pay my co-pay, then get the same routine each visit; warm wax, heat pad for 10 minutes while therapist leaves you alone to complete charting or grab a snack (yes, they have food in the treatment area), then ultrasound for 3 minutes, same exercises as before, end. There are no room dividers in this small, shared space, so you will have the opportunity to hear how all of the other patients were injured and how they are (or aren't) progressing, just as they will hear all about you. You will see a different therapist every time. Some will measure your progress, others are indifferent until you ask them for specific measurements to track your own progress. At my fourth session one therapist seemed surprised to hear I had not yet begun using putty for strengthening exercises. I work in a hospital, around other therapists, and asked one where I could purchase this stuff. She responded by laughing and asking why it had not been provided by my therapist. At the beginning of my final visit I was told I would not need further therapy. Toward the end, she reversed course and asked me to return for one additional visit "just to check on progress." All of this I can live with. However, what prompted this review is my interaction with the owner today. I received a bill today claiming I did not make two copays. No worried, mistakes happen, I have receipts. However, there was also a bill for $75 for a missed office visit. I call and explain that on the day in question I had woken at 2 am with a fever, vomiting, abdominal pain and diarrhea (we would later learn I was a victim of the Camp Mather norovirus). I called out from work (for the 4th time since 1995) and then made two attempts to cancel my 3 pm appointment. At 9:11 am I called and left a voicemail explaining I was ill. At 1:18 pm I called again and left another unreturned voicemail. I go back for another visit a week later and apologize for being too ill to arrive, and there is no mention of the impending cancellation fee. When I explain this to the owner she says that she runs a business and needs to be strict with her cancellation policy and will only consider bending the rule if you are in the emergency room or for a death in the family. I was very specific in asking if she would prefer I drag myself into the clinic and risk infecting everyone else. After skirting around the question a bit, she simply stated "Yes"! So there you have it. If you want to support a practice that prioritizes turning a profit from your visit over keeping an infectious disease out of their office and away from their employees and other patients, then Golden Gate Hand Therapy is for you! read more

After breaking both bones in my arm at the wrist and damaging my distal-radial-ulnar joint in a snowboarding accident, I was sure I was I'm for at least 4-6 months of therapy. Thanks to the expert and kind care by the hand therapists at Golden Gate Hand Therapy I am back in action with almost full range of motion after only 2 1/2 months. I had a ski-related thumb injury this spring and put off dealing with it for months. When I finally got a referral from my GP, we were looking at possible clinics. "'Golden Gate Hand Therapy'... sounds like the spot!" exclaimed my doctor. Indeed it is. This place is charmingly eccentric, and the two practitioners I've worked with have been excellent. It's a small, cozy office with a crew of fun people who seem to really like each other, and the hand-themed decor is pretty priceless. They've got good hardware, a good manner, and pretty flexible scheduling if you book in advance. All around, a great place to heal your hands! read more

Very busy practice in a compact space. I have been there for doctor prescribed OT on my elbow/wrist which was so inflamed that I had sharp pains when typing and lost grip strength. The therapists are friendly and knowledgable. My pain was significantly decreased on the first visit. I notice a lot of other patients there rehabbing from surgery and/or major hand/wrist injuries. The front desk is surprisingly pleasant for the crazy pace and workload for the one person. Parking is a bit of a drag - there is an expensive garage downstairs but you can find street parking 2-3 blocks west. It is across the street from Whole Foods so you can grab snack afterwards! read more

AVOID THIS PLACE. similar situation posted in google review before. I just wish I had read it before I went. Appointment was scheduled at 11am but they called and wanted to charged me $75 cancellation fees at 10:30am the day before. Yes it's still more than 24 hours, and also I called the day before couple times trying to cancel but no one picked up the phone, but they don't care, they just want to charge $75 cancellation fee. When I pointed out it's still more than 24 hours, they hang up the phone and not call back, so I called back and the receptionist was extremely impatient and yelled at me that they normally do NOT have appointment confirmation or reminder. That's right, no confirmation no text no email no call no nothing. If you make an appointment, make sure you know it and don't forget because they will wait til the last minute to call you and tell you a 24 hour cancellation policy and charged you $75. I guess I was lucky this receptionist doesn't know how to count and call me 30 minutes early and that I noticed it. By the way, I don't think their therapy is helpful and that's why I want to cancel in the first place. What happened next confirm my decision. read more

Went here to treat a trigger thumb. The positives include the nice staff members and receptionist. Convenient location to public transportation. But I only went for two sessions and my finger got worst after the last session. I ended up getting a cortisone shot afterall. Unfortunately I cannot mirror the positive reviews given by other reviewers. I had a mallet finger problem and it was not treated correctly causing permanent damage to my fingers. I am contemplating taking legal matters, but I am not sure what that would bring (other than hassle and additional aggravation). During the treatment I had to point out to the therapist that I don't think we should proceed with the exercises as my doctor had told me to look out for certain symptoms. My comment was ignored and brushed aside, until I once again insisted to have a senior person look at it. Once the other person saw the problem, they instructed the therapist to immediately stop the treatment. It had taken me 3 months to get my finger straight, just to have physical therapy mess it up. I cannot recommend this facility at all. read more

Golden Gate Hand Therapy was amazing. I showed up at Golden Gate Hand Therapy after a selective surgery that went wrong. I was emotionally and physically a mess. Melanie and her staff were amazing. Not only did they work with my right pinkie to try to get back to where it once was but they supported me emotionally to get through this tough time. I felt that they really cared about my recovery and well being. If it were not for them, I think I would still be depressed. Although these last 8 months have been difficult, they truly helped me recover and move on in a positive manner. I only wish I had visited Golden Gate Hand Therapy as well as Dr. Bickel prior to my surgery as they would have given me an honest answer. I can't say enough about the wonderful therapists at Golden Gate Hand Therapy. When I initially began therapy here, I was misdiagnosed, and unable to withstand even the lightest touch without terrible pain. The therapists here helped me figure out what was actually wrong with me by gently encouraging me to seek better answers from new doctors so they could actually help me. After I received the correct diagnosis from my new doctor and received a different kind of therapy, I immediately began to improve. After 2 months I had regained some use of my hand (which had been frozen in a claw previous to that). Now, after completing my therapy, I have 95 percent of the use of my hand back. I am so incredibly grateful. It is amazing what these therapists were able to do -- once I was diagnosed, my prognosis was not good. The therapists, particularly Minnie and Melanie, are more than gifted experts in their craft -- they are also great people. They show you how to pace yourself, how to work on your own at home, and provide moral support as I progressed through my painful journey. I cannot believe the results. I owe these people so much for getting my hand back, if not my whole life back. Thank you thank you Golden Gate Hand Therapy - no words will ever be enough! read more

I can't say enough good things about GG Hand Therapy. After a terrible accident involving more than one broken bone in my arm, and needing intensive therapy, GG was my savior. I've been going here for about 8 months after I fractured my shoulder from a snowboarding accident. I highly recommend Minnie. She has been helping me from day one and I'm happy to say, my shoulder has significantly improved since the accident. She pays careful attention to you and pushes you to work hard so that you can get better. As they say, "no pain, no gain!" The staff overall is very friendly and professional.
