There is true experience and expertise here and that is absolutely important and necessary. Just as important is for the therapist to understand that they are getting patients at all levels of trauma and disability... and it is just as important to make sure that you inspire them to be able to do the work you want them to do ...and to never use threats of withdrawal of care as inspiration much less as adequate health care. I know doctors started a long time ago, believing they were gods instead of human beings that chose a calling to help others and made oaths to that end . Active Care Physical Therapy is an exceptional place. Two years ago, I had a total knee replacement that just didn't heal correctly even after going to PT at another location. A friend recommended Active Care where I met Colman O'Leary (PT) and Ian McMahon (Senior Athletic Trainer). At that time, I couldn't walk up or down stairs without tears in my eyes, and walking up & down hills in San Francisco was very painful. After Colman's initial assessment, Ian began working with me to strengthen the muscles supporting my knee -- especially my knee cap. Over time, I began to see improvement but still experienced pain. The environment is very friendly with many clients being supported by athletic trainers, and another person recommended that I see Dr. Kenneth Akizuki whom Colman knew very well. Dr Akizuki and his amazing team identified issues with my patella, and through a series of surgeries was able to remove bone spurs, scarred tissue, and replace the knee-cap. During this period, Colman actively communicated with Dr. Akizuki about my treatment. I continued to go to Active Care twice a week. After a surgery, either Colman or Ian worked directly on my knee to help reduce the build-up of scar tissue. As I progressed, I continued to improve with support from trainers such as Ian, Dylan, Simon, Samantha, and more. Not only did I receive physical support, the staff at Active Care often provided me with emotional support. It's difficult to remain positive every step of the way, and when I was discouraged, they offered encouragement that got me through the tough spots. In addition, the front office (scheduling) and back office (billing, insurance) is incredible. They are communicative, friendly, and supportive. It's been over 2 years since my original surgery and I am walking & hiking again. I am extremely GRATEFUL to the team at Active Care. I went from being afraid that I would never walk normally again to a person who is gaining the strength, flexibility, mobility, and balance to once again live a very active life. After sustaining a Trimalleolar fracture and having surgery for it, my surgeon was adamant I get my PT here. Now, I've been in PT other places but getting PT here is like entering another world. This is where the best of the best athletes come to heal. The therapy is intense and will push you to be back to yourself in record time. I'm working with Lisa and Aaron and I couldn't ask for better expertise. They all truly know and understand the physiology of the body to create the best plan for each individual. I'm active and old which means I get sent to PT roughly every 12-18 months. Neck, back and now shoulder. Active Care is best I've been to. Lisa has an amazing understanding of body mechanics and Brennan very helpful in showing me exercises to strengthen my weak areas. He makes sure I get the right form in each exercise. It is roughly a 2 or 3 to 1 patient to therapist ratio which is fine for me. If they supervise me on a particular exercise and say 3 sets of 20- I don't need the trainer to stand and watch me do 3 sets. Great 1 hour 20 minute session yesterday and I believe 4-5 weeks and I will be "as good as new". read more

This place made my recovery so much slower, I can't express enough to NOT go here! I came here for my acl recovery for about 4 months, and got nowhere. I rarely had any one on one time with a trainer, let alone the ACTUAL physical therapist, who merely said hello to me when I walked in the door, and that was it. It was always about a 3 to 1, patients and trainer ratio, which is crazy! They would leave me on a machine for 10-15 minutes at a time with no discussion, no tips, no help. And several times, if my trainer was out for the day, they'd give me another guy who spoke poorly about the other trainers, saying he doesn't know what he's doing, and no one can do it better than he can. So weird. And clearly, no one did know what they're doing were doing! I always saw Lisa, the owner, in there working with only a couple people at a time. I don't know if it was discrimination, being rude, or just being plain neglectful, but I never got treated the way I was supposed to. Now, I go somewhere that gives me 30 minutes one on one with a PT, and 45 minutes with a trainer. Find a place that treats you right, because this isn't it. read more

I don't like to leave negative reviews but enough is enough. Active Care has been harassing me about a 35 dollar copay since February. I paid this copay in cash, in person, just like I paid every other copay but was told they can't verify the payment because the woman who accepted it no longer works there. After dozens of emails and multiple calls I gave in and paid the bill via credit card over the phone. Boy was I surprised when I received another request for $35 this morning. I checked to see if the initial CC payment went through, it did not. I asked my wife who was with me in the car when I gave my CC info if I am losing my mind, she confirmed I am not. I'm going to pay this $35 for a third time in hopes of never hearing from this company again. But wait, there's more- Like I said, I don't like to leave bad reviews so I never addressed the quality of care. The main doctor is excellent but you're lucky if you get 60 seconds with him after your initial consultation. During the rest of your visits you will be working with very young individuals that appear to be students learning in the field. Much of your time will be spent watching them wait for feedback from the main doctor as he circles the room making suggestions and corrections to their techniques. Everyone was very friendly and polite but Active Care felt more like a school than a professional physical therapist office. I left Active Care after 4 or 5 visits feeling hustled and frustrated. To add insult to injury they're still harassing me about a payment I made in cash 6 months ago. I guess the lesson to be learned is, always get a receipt for any cash payments you make and don't go to Active Care if you're looking for professional physical therapy. read more

I've been in physical therapy for years. Coleman O'Leary and his team are the best! They helped restore function to my elbow after a fracture. Coleman brought the strength and flexibility to better levels than I've had in 40 years. More impressive to me, he and his team are working with me to restore my overall function since I had complicatoins following Covid. Instead of setting a minimal goal of restoring balance so I won't fall, they are working to help me dp better yoga, get back on cable cars and back on my horse. I went here for an ankle injury, specifically a grade 2+ sprain I got while running. It was a bad sprain with lots of swelling and bruising. Care has been great. Been going consistently for close to two months now. Recovery is going well and I'm already back to running. Staff is great. Accommodating, understanding, and friendly. They are as hands on or hands off as you want them to be. Coleman, the lead PT, is fantastic. He has a calming demeanor and gives great advice. The trainers I've had are Sam, Brianna, and G. All have been fantastic. Super friendly and easy to chat with and have a great knowledge base. If you get a sports injury in the SF area, I recommend these guys. read more

I've been going to Active Care for the past three months to rehab after my ATFL surgery and it has been absolutely fantastic. I came here at the specific direction from my surgeon and have been working with Coleman, as well as Gianluca, Simon, Cali, and Brandon. My surgeon has been very pleased with the recovery and released me from his oversight after only 12 weeks post surgery. Would highly recommend coming here. The atmosphere is great. So far so good, but I still have a ways to go in recovering from what 25+ years of dancing, mountain biking and snowboarding have done to my body. As a dancer I appreciate Lisa, the owner's, eye and attention to detail in seeing patterns and misalignments and treating them at the source. This is not a one size fits all kind of place. I came in with a chronic pectoral tear that had been bothering me for over 15 years. I had seen multiple surgeons before, but none could offer a real solution. I had gone to several physical therapists but none of the treatments were sufficient for what realistically required a surgical repair. I was stuck dealing with pain and limitations, with no clear path forward. Lisa didn't just treat me--she personally used her network to help me find a surgeon who could actually fix the issue. That kind of dedication is rare, and it speaks volumes about how much she and her team truly care about their patients. Beyond that, the expertise at Active Care is unbelievable. Their team understands sports injuries at a deep level, and whether you're dealing with something common or complex, you're in the best hands possible. My roommate sang their praises for a torn ACL. Imagine my surprise when I felt no better after my fourth appointment, and amazing after only 1 appt with a therapist in Virginia. I was suffering from acute shoulder pain and was desperate for help. During my consult, let's call him Fred, was great. He took his time, was with me for the whole appointment; accurately diagnoses bicep tendonitis and potentially shoulder impingement (confirmed by mri). But for the three following appointments I felt like this was such a waste of time. I was passed onto another therapist for 90% of the session and Fred would barely work my shoulder area at the end for a few minutes. At one point he told me I'd probably have to turn to injections since my sleep was being disrupted which irritated me because why would I waste my time with PT if they were just going to push me onto a temporary solution. And this still bugs me because lo and behold my problem was solvable by some actual TLC by an attentive therapist in VA. Turns out my first rib was basically launched into my shoulder joint, scalenes hyper tight, c spine misaligned, and my shoulder blades have minimal mobility. How did she figure that all out in 30 minutes and they couldn't evolve from the consult diagnosis after 3 sessions? The exercises they ran me through were so basic and really did not help resolve the real problem (PT in Virginia figured out immediately and I literally felt 70% better after my first session with her). They hardly switched them up or bothered watching performance during sets because the therapist would just give me instruction and then go work with other clients for 15 minutes at a time.. leaving me twiddling my thumbs often. They clearly care about volume over care and attention (which might be fine for some people but a waste of my time and money personally). Intake was weird here as well - you couldn't book on a portal or speak to someone in real time, you had to wait till they emailed and assigned you a time that may not work for you. Front desk dude was always very kind and patient with people on the phone- excellent customer service. read more

Active Care is AWESOME!! They are knowledgeable, professional and compassionate. The physical therapy is outstanding! The staff works very well together. My experience at Active Care was very different than other places, I have had to endure. This place has a welcoming, warm and casual feel. As I observed the camaraderie, one can see, these people really care about their clients. This place looks like a gym with friends helping each other, chatting and smiling as they do their workouts. The facility is clean, spacious and the equipment is sanitized after each use. I definitely recommend Active Care for all your physical therapy, strengthening workouts or just have fun dancing. I had some positive moments at this place but the negative outweighed it so leaving a review... I was hesitant about the group setting/interns juggling patients based on reviews but ended up coming here anyway after a recommendation from my PCP and a friend The main PT discovered a potential DVT in my leg and asked me to go to the hospital, I went to the ER and they confirmed DVT, so I went on medicine... had this not been caught maybe I'd be dead and not writing this Started going twice a week but besides the initial consult barely saw the main PT, interns juggling 3-4 patients, and not much attention or feedback when needed. Sometimes sitting on the machines waiting for assistance for 5+ mins Three months into treatment for Achilles surgery rehab I went on a vacation after confirming it would be okay, and did the take-home exercises, but when I came back was unable to perform toe walking to the level the PT wanted they got salty, misheard something I said, and threw it back in my face. Beginning of the end... Eventually, it got to the point where the main PT would straight up just text while visiting me or talk to other patients instead of me. Twice I had to wait 30+ minutes on a table for him to come over after I had worked for hours already Abruptly after 6+ months, I was told that CIGNA would not keep allowing PT without a big fight and I'd be on my own in another two sessions, despite not being fully recovered. I had to pull out the information about continuing through cash visits, it wasn't even offered, pretty sure the dude just decided he didn't want to see me anymore, which made me feel like I had failed him by not recovering faster or something, pretty dumb. Talking to him about insurance was the longest conversation I had with him in weeks Shortly after leaving, I found another 1:1 PT location and they got CIGNA to cover the PT with assumingly some effort but pissed me off that the effort was not there after I had given this money mill cash two times a week for nearly 6 months TLDR: The main PT probably saved my life by diagnosing DVT but after it was a slippery slope with them. Some of the interns were phenomenal, some were not, and the quality of the session depended on how overbooked ActiveCare was that day. The administrators and other staff were all nice read more

When I first came in, I couldn't help but notice the posters of star athletes that have come in for treatment over the years. Including one of my childhood idols: Jerry Rice. He had come in after blowing out his knee. I remember thinking, "If it's good enough for Jerry, certainly good enough for me." That's proven true over my months coming here. My leg pain has gone away thanks to the work I've done here under the capable guidance of Greg and his staff. Greg cares a ton about his patients. You can feel it day-in day-out. And he's ready to do pretty much anything to get you back to 100%. His staff is attentive, knowledgeable, and capable. It's no surprise that ActiveCare is considered the best in the Bay Area. While the people who work at Active Care are lovely (especially Jeff), this is a mill rather than a physical therapy practice. At best it's mismanagement, at worst it's insurance fraud. You will never see a PT, and your PT assistant will be juggling half a dozen patients at once. Over the course of three sessions, I saw got three minutes of face time with the PT, all during my first visit. During my next two sessions, I sat on a table for 20-30 minutes at the end of a workout and was eventually told the PT was too busy up to see me. In both instances, ActiveCare billed my insurance for a PT visit and services not actually conducted by a PT. Trust the other reviewers. You can always get an appointment here for a reason... read more

Greg gives quality care. I've been to other physical therapists and Active Care is by far the best I have been to. I have progressed farther than I would have expected. This is due to the attention Greg gives. I have been to other physical therapists where you only see the therapist every once in awhile. I see Greg every since time. I don't know why Active Care is not 5 star rated? It certainly should be. I am 10 weeks out from a full knee replacement, I have been doing my rehab work there, and my experience has been excellent. The PTs there are great, they know their stuff and they know and follow their patients progress very closely. The facility is well equipped and feels like a combination health club, dance studio, and boxing ring. It is a motivating place just to walk into. Their tech works well, the office process is smooth, and I would not hesitate to recommend AC to anyone who wants to get back to 100%. I Tried to go to Physical Therapy here. I had an appointment this morning, showed up early, was ready to go....and they refused to see me because I wouldn't sign their balance billing policy. I told them it's illegal and they reiterated that they wouldn't provide care for me if I didn't sign that policy. For those of you interested, balance billing is illegal at the state and federal level and has been since 2017. Incredibly disappointing to be dealing with this. Lots of other reviews allude to this practice - I wish I'd read more reviews before waiting a few weeks to get seen. read more

This is a horrible office. I contacted this office to set up physical therapy for my 80 year old father, who had shoulder surgery in January 2024. I confirmed with the office staff twice over the phone (with two different staff members) that they accepted his insurance and we waited 3 weeks for his appointment. He was then contacted today (the day before his appointment) and was told that they did not in fact accept his insurance and so he had to cancel his appointment for tomorrow. He now cannot schedule another appointment with another clinic for at least a month due to the long wait lists at other clinics. As a physician myself, I cannot believe that they would do this to someone who is seeking care. They have delayed his medical care and should be held responsible for this. read more

In addition to my own experience, I recommended Active Care to a friend, age 71, suffering from Sciatica and in extreme pain. He also was assigned to Greg and was given exercises he could do at home in addition to therapy. In about 3 weeks or a month, he had improved so well that he was able to stop therapy sessions and was free of pain. He continues to do home exercises to prevent flareups. My physical therapy trainer was Jocelyn Iglehart. I worked with her for over 6 months twice a week so I am in a good position to write about her ability to consistently provide excellent care. Jocelyn is highly skilled and knowledgeable about body mechanics. I have watched her work confidently with clients with a wide variety of complex physical issues. She also works well with a wide age range of patients from children to the elders and is clearly comfortable working with diverse populations. I really appreciated her patience. Often an exercise either caused me pain or didn't generate the muscular "burn" that was needed. She would often make slight corrections to my form that often made an immediate difference. Jocelyn is a good listener and communicator. She asked good questions and provides honest feedback. When she is working with you, you will get her full attention. In addition to her professional skills, Jocelyn has a big heart and is compassionate and connects well with her patients. She has quite a following at Active Care! If you are looking for a dedicated and skillful physical therapist with a warm and personable interpersonal style, she the one you want! read more

Gregory PT and Maxwell ( Assistant, not even a PT, according to Front Desk) - I was not comfortable with ,sharing my PT session with 3-5 additional clients - It is disrespectful to clients. Can you imagine your doctor ‍ seeing other patients at the same time ? Why bother to come back to this place at 6:30 AM? I told my doctor about my experience at this place. Just give me the exercises from the internet and I will do it at home :) why bother to pay $90.0 copayment to receive such a awful experience? At the end of the session Gregory PT came back and wanted me to book at least 2 sessions a week :/ jajajaja - in my mind - I said , no way - I will not come back to this place .... Maxwell - assistance didn't even say goodbye... he was occupied with other people .... I will inform my Cigna insurance about this experience. A few months ago, my local doctor thought that I had a frozen shoulder and I had a cortisone shot and started Physical therapy with Colman O'Leary and his team at Active Care. He thought that I might have something else going on, and carefully treated me. I got a 2nd opinion at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN and they agreed with Colman. I have been going to Active Care for 20+ years - as needed for post-surgery rehab, injuries, and various orthopedic health issues. Colman, Lisa, and the staff, particularly trainers, Carolyn (who keeps the place running, as well) & Daniel, have never failed me. Active Care has a very different philosophy than any other Physical Therapists that I have been to. You are initially seen by a licensed therapist and evaluated, then prescribed treatment and exercises (adding more in following sessions, as you progress). The most important aspect of your treatment is that each patient gets an individualized therapy routine. It is not a cookie-cutter shop: you have a painful knee or back, so here's a piece of paper with the exercises to do. You are supervised with a trainer through the prescribed exercises, as needed, for each session. You are not left alone to flounder and try to remember how to do things. Someone is watching you and assisting for correct form and to be sure you don't further injure yourself. Active Care has patients of all ages and needs, but particularly rehabs to get people back to the exercise and lifestyle that they desire, treating athletes, dancers, kids, exercise health nuts of all ages, non-exercisers, as well as the over 65'ers. You're not on the clock at Active Care; you have the time and oversight necessary to rehab correctly. You'll have the full commitment from the staff and the more committed you are and the harder you're willing to work the better and quicker your progress and results will be. read more

I had the best experience at Active Care! I came in with a knee injury and Coleman and his team were so helpful in assessing my condition, communicating with my doctor, listening to my goals, and helping me arrange a timeline for recovery! Coleman and Gianluca were the trainers I worked with and I always felt very cared for and a top priority. I would (and did!) recommend them to a friend and would similarly recommend them to anyone looking for a physical therapist. The facility is incredibly clean, the support staff very friendly and accommodating, and the overall energy in the office is very optimistic! My knee has healed and I am back to long distance running and am no longer experiencing any discomfort/pain. I attribute this success entirely to the Active Care team who assured me I would make a full recovery with their help! read more

I had a very bittersweet experience with Active Care. I attended 3 sessions and all of the people who assisted me were phenomenal! I felt better instantly. They were all incredibly kind and patient with me. However, the issue I had was with my insurance. I called Active Care the day before my first appointment to confirm my appointment and see if my insurance was verified. The front desk personnel said that they would get back to me about it. The morning of my appointment, they called and said my insurance was verified. I went for my first appointment and they hadn't said anything else about my insurance after confirming it in person and reviewing my insurance card. Then, the morning of my 3rd session, I got an email that they actually did not accept my insurance. I was confused and frustrated because I confirmed more than once that they took my insurance and that it was verified. And on top of that, I had been there twice already. I understand that this may not be the fault of the front desk as I understand that insurance stuff can be wonky. However, I would've appreciated knowing earlier, so that I could've saved hundreds of dollars. I will not be going back due to this frustrating occurrence. However, if they do indeed take your insurance, I would highly recommend their physical therapists! They were phenomenal. No issue with them at all. :) read more
