It was briefly reviewed at the beginning of my visit to ensure that all of my needs were met during service. During my massage, the therapist, Loren, used the cupping technique which I had never experienced before. I felt all types of tension being released from my body. The pressure was the perfect balance of intensity, yet light enough that I was able to fall asleep! Disclaimer- The exterior of the location could be off putting, but not to worry. The single room shop is inviting and warm. Other pros: -heated table blanket -water and tea after the massage -covid friendly procedures

Kathleen is BACK!!!…read more My search for an LMT that is professional, listened, and knew how to treat the aches/pain/stiffness ended when I found Kathleen years ago. Then she took a break and my journey to find a new LMT was very difficult. If you've had a few bad massages, you know the pain isn't just physical. It can also affect you mentally/physically. I felt like I could get no relief and had to start acupuncture and PT (both are great) but always felt something missing (and my achy neck/shoulders/back is a constant reminder). So I was overjoyed (to tears amidst childlike giddiness) to stumble on Kathleen's reopening of Simple Gifts and in my fave little Old Town EC. Kathleen takes the time to understand your specific needs, comfort level, preferences, and any quirks. She takes the time to get acquainted thus giving you the best massage experience. And when I say that she takes the time, she does NOT take it out of your scheduled massage time! You get the time you booked. No one else has helped me feel so relaxed, sleep better, fall asleep while getting a massage and even have a wonderful emotional experience while being massaged. Pure bliss and enjoyment of letting all that -ish go. You know that knot that you just can't seem to get to and no one else seems to hit it either? Kathleen pinpoints it and all you can do is let out a wonderful sigh of "Ahhhh, that's the spot". The new location is the old Quiet Time Hypnosis, so it is comfortable and quiet in old town EC. So it is across the hall from the previous location if you've been years ago. There isn't heavy scents to cause allergic reactions, excessive oiliness, eccentricity or any of that. It is a cozy, simple, relaxing, and comfortable environment. If you like it warmer or cooler; dimmer/brighter, etc, simply ask. Kathleen is truly an expert and has the most skilled talents to get to the knots and work them out. And she listens!!! I highly recommend Kathleen as she is a truly gifted LMT and wonderful human!

What a hidden gem!…read more My transition from Phoenix, AZ to Baltimore, MD hasn't been the easiest or the smoothest. That was kind of expected considering that Phoenix and Baltimore are practically two different worlds, but I didn't think I would have such a hard time trying to find my zen and claiming my peace. It has. Almost by default been difficult. I've been feeing so blah lately and knew I needed a reading, cleansing or something. I jumped out there and checked Groupon. Typed in "Reiki" and BOOM! Sonja Secrets Aromatherapy & Wellness popped up! I read the reviews on Groupon, looked no where else and booked. The earliest appointment time was 4 days away. Score! Booking online was a breeze. I had no issues at all. For some reason the hours listed on Google are different from the actual operating hours so call to confirm when they're open. Immediately upon entering I felt a sense of calm come over me. It smelled divine and felt warm. I met Maria. She explained exactly what a Reiki session was. I know a Reiki session is energy cleansing. It is, but so much more. Maria made it plain. She was transparent, gentle, spoke softly, soothing, knowledgeable and spot on in what she was feeling. I cried during my session. Twice! It was that good! I purchased the Groupon for 3 sessions so I'm eagerly awaiting for my next one. I also purchased anxiety tea and the "Glow Up" facial scrub and used that for the first time today. I got 2 compliments from strangers on how fresh and "glow-y" my face looks. I am impressed and forever a fan. I highly, highly recommend trying out Sonja Secrets Aromatherapy & Wellness for your Reiki session, and natural products.

TL;DR: Don't buy a gift certificate/card from this place…read more Zen and the City really appears to be set up for members and isn't equipped to interact with outsider customers. Unsurprisingly, most of the negative reviews are from people trying to deal with their gift certificates or gift cards since they are not able to provide reasonable service to people unfamiliar with their procedures. Throughout the process, I had to chase the owner, Gary, repeatedly over text and phone in order to get any information. A list of things I wish I knew before attempting to use a gift certificate here: I was alone in the building, not just the room, with an unknown man. Zen and the City is a therapist-owned establishment that has appointment-only booking for services. In light of this description, I probably should have known that I would be alone with my massage therapist. Except the website contains none of that information, which I only learned about after the appointment, so I was blindsided. My massage therapist was a very nice man who did his best to make me feel welcome and taken care of (Thank you, Anthony. You were the only good part of this whole experience!), but it was hard to set aside how uncomfortable it was to be alone with a strange man without knowing before that no one else would be there. The gift certificates (physical) and gift cards (e-cards) are redeemed in different ways. The website doesn't make it clear (either in the description or during the purchase) that physical gift certificates are only redeemable for a specific service, and that the gift certificates and gift cards are considered two different products. When I got the certificate for Zen and the City, neither my father (who bought this as a gift) nor I knew there was a difference between the two until after I had my appointment and was told otherwise. If you redeem the service-specific gift certificate for the wrong service by mistake, Zen and the City will not inform you of the mistake when you book your appointment and will instead pocket the remaining money without further services or refund, even after their error is pointed out to them. I suspect they would have prevented me from redeeming the gift certificate for something that was MORE money than the one I used, but when I accidentally used it from something that cost LESS, I was only told afterwards when I couldn't fix my mistake, or receive a refund for the balance. The initial confirmation text message is meaningless. It doesn't accurately reflect that an appointment's successfully been made (because you get a text regardless), and it does not result in you being correctly signed up to receive text messages. Instead, they will contact you by email, no matter your indicated preference (which they don't know anyway because they never ask for your preference). If there is a problem with your email address, they will not use your phone number to follow up. There will be no further attempt to contact you. I'll be honest and admit that I made quite a few mistakes in attempting to deal with Zen and the City, and I accept the responsibility of those mistakes. However, I think it's important for future potential customers to know beforehand that this is the kind of business that is happy to take advantage of your confusion, your mistakes, or your unexpected illness (check out their sick policy). It's up to you whether you want to risk giving this place your money and time.
