I love, love, love the Golden Ace! This is a dive bar on a part of East Washington Street long forgotten and left to urban decay. For this reason, some people may raise an eyebrow about going there on any day apart from St. Patty's Day. It's been made well known that this is one of the best parties in the country on St. Patty's Day, and it is! They set up a tent outside, bring in a band from Ireland, and the typical St. Patrick's Day libations. Cover is a reasonable $5, and the drink prices are average. Cash only on St. Patrick's. Always a huge crowd, always a good time. Apart from St. Patrick's Day, I still like to stop in on occasion, as they have live music, trivia, and other activities. Even if there's no activity, I like the burgers, the drinks, the family, and the charm of the place. It's like visiting an old friend.

The best place in Indy to celebrate St. Patrick's Day! Reasonable beer prices, cover charge, and a fantastic atmosphere! With live music, a wide range of ages, and decent weather for Indiana in March this place was packed. I can't wait to come back to enjoy more events and try the food everyone says is phenomenal!

This is everything a bar should be. Cozy, warm, inviting, in an odd sort of way. It's got it's own unique character. The moment you walk in, you know you're not in some corporate knock off Irish bar, you're in the real deal. You'll find lots of (low key) activities here. Jam sessions, trivia night, spontaneous games of Euchre, and friendly conversation. And, dare I say, the best cheeseburger in Indy. Quite possibly, in the midwest. The mixed drinks are generous and cheap. Beer is cheap enough, too. This really isn't a place you want to drop in for a quick bite. It's a place you want to linger, people watch, and escape the real world for a while.

This was a delicious burger!

Let's hear it for a place with an interesting history, local flavor, and a surprisingly good burger. The Golden Ace Inn opened in 1931, less than a year after the repeal of prohibition. The owners, Irish immigrants from Donnegal, later changed the name to "Emerald Isle", in an effort to highlight the Ace's identity as an Irish pub. But Indiana at the time was still a stronghold of the KKK, which didn't like the Irish-Catholic nature of the enterprise. Business plummeted, and the owners changed the name back to Golden Ace. Even so, the place remains Indy's oldest Irish pub. Today, the son and grandson of the original owners still run the place and tend bar. They have increasingly added the family name to the place ("McGinley's Golden Ace"), and that's how a lot of the locals know it. You'll also notice shamrocks on the outside walls and a variety of Irish paraphernalia. But don't let that fool you. Shamrocks are sometimes a sign of a fake Irish pub -- a pub trying too hard to make a buck on St. Paddy's Day. But in the case of McGinley's Golden Ace, it's the real deal. And it's really really wonderful. And seriously, that burger was really quite decent ... especially for the price.

They had the door open, which was letting in the fresh almost-spring air.) Drinks are pretty much all they have at Snug, to be honest. Don't visit thinking you're going to find a meal, because they don't have a lot of food beyond locally made hand pies and empanadas, a grazing board, and something called Snug Nuts. (Which brings to mind certain ... images.) I didn't get any food, just a Road & Coke, which is a whiskey with a Coke and lime, similar to a Cuba libre, although a Cuba uses rum. It was delicious, but a little light on the booze. It was only $5 and change, though, so it's kind of like what do you expect, really. It was a nice drink to sip slowly while I sat in the small, cozy bar. Speaking of bar aesthetics: Snug lives up to its name. It's tiny and dark but inviting. It feels like stepping into a hug. A hug that can also provide you with copious amounts of Irish whiskey, which sounds like the best kind of hug, to me.

I would've rather grown a chicken, killed it for some wings, made a hat with its feathers and made sensory toys with its eyes The buns were probably the best part. The lettuce was cut smaller than you could ever imagine, the chicken had a good amount but tasted like it was drowned in Franks Red Hot Sauce. The tomato was a tomato This isn't all the restaurant though. The other times I visited here were AMAZING The times I sat in the big room were good because, there were TVs to save my boredom, the built in chargers were neat, and the food was just better! It's cozy and very laid back with high top tables. I ordered an Old Fashioned but mixed drinks weren't really on offer unless it was something like rum and coke. I had a beer. It was fine. We were there for about an hour and a half. I would definitely return. The vibes were slow paced. We moved on to The Checkered Flag. Wowza!! It was a Thursday night but the place was hopping. We were joined by another friend with plans to have a bite to eat. The menu is unbelievable. So much to choose from. We were kind of boring because 3 of us chose the same thing and the other two chose the same item. Two had the pork tenderloin. Both agreed it was excellent. Three of us had the BBQ Pork spud. It's a giant baked potato with butter, a good spread of pimento cheese, moist pulled pork, BBQ sauce, coleslaw and green onions. It was fantastic. Normally the pork can become a bit dry. This was not the case. Cooked perfectly. I was able to order the Old Fashioned. They apologized because they were out of oranges but I was fine. It was a very good drink. There happened to be two musicians performing. I was quite impressed. This tavern was very very impressive. We all agreed to return Our final stop was Herrmann. It's a small brewery tucked away off a quiet street. We were offered several tastings of the beers on offer. We were all able to find something to our liking. I had a porter. There are tables for four spread around the seating area. It's comfortable and definitely a neighborhood haunt. All three places were definitely neighborhood taverns. The Checkered Flag was hands down the best! Indy has so much to offer!
