I submitted an offer expecting to get into negotiations and he basically called me an idiot and said I was wasting his time. I will no longer go to this coin shop. I took a very ornate spoon in there and had it tested for silver because the stamp could not be found. He asked if I really cared about the spoon. I was thinking he was going to make me a lowball offer. Instead he broke the spoon. I did not even have a chance to sell it. When I asked him (different day) to make good on the spoon because he broke it and I paid a lot of money for this spoon. He was very rude and declined. I asked him If this is how he wants to run his business? Breaking people's property without asking and then not paying for it? He replied "Yes". Extremely disappointing! I found the two gentlemen there to be less than honest. I sold one gold coin there and was told in detail how they use the closing price of gold from the day before less their handling fee. When I went back 3 months later with another coin, it was a totally different story (and handling fee). When I asked them to explain the discrepancy to what they had told me before, they wouldn't answer and quickly wrote a check for me to get the gold. Beware of selling your gold to many other jewelers who will only pay an unfair percentage of the market price. Some of these folks are truly scandalous in their low-ball offers now when gold is at its historic peak. Clark's a refiner, which means he assays your gold and after buying it melts it down for resale, so this is where you're most likely to get a good deal. He also patiently explains how he figures the value of your gold and offers payment on the spot. Went into this place twice over the last year to buy low denominational gold eagle coins as gifts. Clark seems disinterested and grumpy. The previous negative reviews seem to be right on. Today I called because I want to buy some larger 1/4 oz eagles and asked his price on the phone fully intending to go down and buy a few. Well, he was very rude and belligerent on the phone and hung up saying "who cares, it is only a quarter ounce of gold". He basically was shouting at me before he hung up. Skip this place. Who needs to deal with a grump who does not seem to care about doing business any more. Also, his sell prices are too high and his buy prices are too low compared to other places. He does not come across as an honest dealer at all! He refused to tell me what his buy and sell policies are when asked in a nice fashion. Life is too short. They are very standard pieces to sell and give quotes for. He acted like I was ridiculous to ask for a quote on the phone. He then gave me quotes and promptly hung up on me (!). I wished I would have read the reviews on this site before doing business with Clark. My story is long, but the short of it is that I went to buy a gift for my husband since he loves coins. Unfortunately I don't know much about coins and this is where Clark ended up charging me double the price on the few coins I bought. He took advantage of my lack of knowledge. I found this out when I went to another coin shop and told them how much I paid for the coins I purchased from Clark. The other coin shop owner had heard about Clark's bad reputation and had many clients that were also turned off by Gold Hill. I was really embarrassed when I found out I paid double. I ended up not buying what my husband really wanted and tried to exchange the coins for a gold liberty dollar of which I would have owed an additional $300. Clark said he would give me less than half of what I paid him the week before for the coins I wanted to exchange that I had just purchased from him!!! I could not believe it! My husband had bought coins from him in the past. I bought $900 worth of coins from him the week before and told him I planned to buy coins for birthdays and such. In other words, I was committing to being a loyal customer. But he ruined that for me. I had not even taken the coins I bought out of the bag and had the receipt in tact. It could have been a smooth transaction and could have been a win/win, but this was not an option. Clark is very rude, grumpy and I agree with others in saying that he is a real jerk! Summary: Massively overpriced, slow shipping and incredibly rude! Experience 1: Purchased coin through the internet. Payment was only possible with personal check. After mailing in personal check, I had to wait an additional 10 days to make sure that the check cleared which I think nowadays should be unnecessary and unacceptable. Check showed cleared on my bank account 2 days after check was received and posted by Dealer. After the imposed and mandatory 10 day waiting period, I had to call seller several times to have item mailed. Turnaround time from the moment that purchase was completed on internet to finally receiving the coin was a full 3 weeks. Experience 2: I noticed coin of interest advertised on dealer's website for $675. I contacted Dealer to inquire about the quality of this coin and to make sure that coin would pass certification and grading through NGC/PCGS. I also inquired about his lowest acceptable sales price and informed him that I had serious interest in purchasing this coin. Dealer returned email immediately informing me that I could purchase this coin for $900! ($225 above the price listed on website). I immediately went back to the Dealer's online website and noticed that dealer had increased his asking price to $900 immediately after I inquired about this coin. I called the dealer to discuss this issue and he informed me that market conditions had made him decide to increase his price to $900 (+33%). Dealer was very disrespectful and rude during this telephone conversation. After I informed him that I intended to leave a negative review he sent several harassing, intimidating and threatening emails. After reviewing the dealer's website it became apparent that his coins were all massively overpriced. After 2 bad experiences he lost a customer. read more
