What a great venue! If you've never been to an oyster roast here, you have really missed out! Now, I will make sure to say that this place is rustic. It's improved over the years and has an enclosed building suitable for receptions (indoor plumbing!), but it's on a small island on the Intracoastal Waterway across from Sullivan's Island. Views are spectacular if you go during the day or during a sunset, but most of my personal experience has been at night. There is a large outdoor covered patio suitable for large oyster roasts and parties. The inside clubhouse area has a wet bar and multiple tables and chairs, along with a small kitchen for prep and storage. A party of 75 or more could easily be accommodated at once in each area, for a total of 150 guests.
Getting to the island can be a little tricky. It's the last drive (down a hill) on the left before the bridge, when leaving Mount Pleasant headed toward Sullivan's Island. There is a large gravel lot for parking once you get there though. You'll be amazed that the place is larger than you might have thought.
During a normal day, they are known as the East Cooper Outboard Motor Club, but most locals just refer to this in general as Gold Bug Island. The members and ladies auxiliary participate in several charitable events throughout the year as well, so look for them listed locally. The space is available for private rentals for wedding receptions, high school graduation parties, etc., even to non-members. What a unique way to entertain out of town family and friends. read more
