I enjoyed that they put the food on the injera. Mr. Gent said the lamb was delicious. The food made us full quickly! Service: 2 stars. Nobody made us feel welcomed and the person behind the bar didn't acknowledge us until 15 minutes later, when she removed excess items from our table and gave us water. She did not ask us if we wanted anything else to drink so we didn't get anything. We had said our menus to the side as a signal that we were ready. I'm not sure if it was a server or the owner who took out order and we waited another 15 + minutes for our food. She did explain to us how to use the injera to pick up the food. When I informed her we had a groupon and she did not seem happy to hear that. She left so we had to wait for her to get us some change so we could tip. Atmosphere: 2 stars. This was the second Ethiopian restaurant we tried and were rather disappointed. It is a one man show really. The guy who seated us and took the order was the same guy who went back to the kitchen to cook our order. We asked what he recommended and he told us #1 (beef) or #5 (chicken). I don't eat beef and my friend doesn't eat chicken so we decided on #4 - lamb and the vegetarian dish. What a huge mistake the lamb was. The presentation is the same at both restaurants but the lamb was grizzle only. I don't know what the purpose is to serve such a dish but I would never order that again. The guy was really busy entertaining his friends at the other side of the restaurant but was attentive enough that we were not ignored (we were the only patrons at the restaurant). The price was equivalent to Ghion but the ambiance was far inferior and the food was not something I would recommend. Really bad experience! Service was slow, the waitress was in her own world and pretty clueless. She told us she could not serve us wine because their liquor license had expired but she happily served alcohol to other custmers who seemed to be her countrymen and regular customers. I have found Ethiopian people to be welcoming and warm in general. Know before you go if you are going to try something new and different. Something out of your comfort zone. Not all cuisines serve food the same, whether it's about how it's cooked or if you have familiar utensils. There are lots of Groupon users out there, myself included, and they are a ticket to adventure. Ethiopian food is definitely about adventure. Not all of the food is cooked. Traditional food is eaten with your hands. Portions are best shared on a big platter family style and not individual plates. If you are unsure ask. I don't think all of the service problems here are related to customers. I think someone here has issues. But our server warmed up considerably after we showed enthusiasm for the cuisine. They prepare a number of foods to order except for stewed meats, so it will not be fast at an Ethiopian restaurant. My advice is to not order the chicken (Doro Wat) unless you want one piece of chicken to strip down for your own meal. It's hard to share. The Lamb Tibs is delicious - have it juicy not crisp. Anything in a sauce is wonderful as the sauce will soak the spongy injera bread lining the platter and then you rip it or cut it out and eat it. You will be fighting over it. Veggie juices, too. All of the vegetables are good. The Vegetarian Combo is excellent. A party of two will be stuffed with two entrees and use of the injera bread to eat. Whoever cooks is good. Customers need to be welcomed as they enter. Service needs to be open to pleasant instruction about their menu and open to doing it over and over again or they will not get repeat business from non-Ethiopians. read more

I'm sorry to say I didn't quite enjoy this food experience. I'm an Ethiopian food virgin. Got a Groupon deal for $15 for $30, dinner for 2 offer. Even then I don't think the price justified what we ate. First I ordered the Sambhusa, which are triangular puff pastry filled with whole green lentils. This one was quite good. The dipping sauce was delicious. 3 small pieces for $4.49 or 4.99 (I forgot). I ordered a vegetarian platter ($11.99) and my friend got the only chicken dish on the menu ($14.99). The vegetarian plate came with two lentil dishes, one spinach and one cabbage/tomato salad along with injera. The chicken came in a bowl of very oily, fragrant yet under-seasoned gravy. There was 1 chicken thigh on the entire dish and that's it. The taste of food to me was low on seasoning (salt and pepper please) the red lentil was good. But I wasn't very happy with anything else. Food wasn't the only underwhelming aspect of this trip. The place itself is dark and run down. Smoke-filled air made our throats itchy and creaking chairs weren't the comfiest to sit on. 1 star for the ambience. There was one waitress attending all the tables and the bar. We just finished our meal and it was delicious! We heard about this place on Groupon and got the 4 person option. We ordered the Sambusas (fried lentil "pouches"), the Lamb Tibs and the Vegetable Combination platter. The Sambusas were really spicy but had great flavor! The hubby doesn't like spicy and even he ate them. The lamb was amazing as well, though the bestie didn't like it because she said it had too much anise. The other 3 of us disagreed, but if anise isn't your thing you might not like it. The Vegetable Platter is a MUST. The lentils and the greens were our favorite part. No utensils here, just spongy bread and fingers. The bread was a texture we weren't used to but after the first couple bites, that weird texture was forgotten. We had an amazing, attentive waitress, honestly one of the best I've had in awhile. She was really helpful with the menu and checked on us often. The venue is set up more like a dive bar. There are pillows that say "Happy Holidays" and the cushions are completely worn down. There are slot machines right next to the door, which makes it seem kind of sketchy. The food here was fantastic; the cook actually deserves a 5-star, whom my boyfriend and I met the first time we went here. However, the service/management/communication could use some work. I loved the inerja, and there was a food item that caught my eye on the menu that I wanted to try a second time around: RAW beef. I tried coming back here one late night, and to double check the hours, I looked online and saw 2am. I called to clarify to ask what time the actual kitchen closes, and the lady on the phone said 10-11pm. Confused by the range of time as an answer, I asked again. Nothing direct, once more, but between 10-11pm. I took this as a sign that it would be between those hours, because rarely do people give a range and they actual mean the extreme ends of the range. It was around 9:15 when I called, so I decided to try and make it. It didn't help that the address posted for this restaurant is wrong on Google: My boyfriend and I ended up at the restaurant at 9:55. When we came in, the first thing the lady tells us is that they are closed at 10. I understood that we were cutting it close, but NOW you say an exact time? I would have saved myself an extra trip if this lady was more clearer in the first place. So I come back for a 3rd time because I still had the Groupon to use. Let me emphasize that I paid for this Groupon just to try their raw beef entree (Kurt Sega). The menu said that this entree was served only on Saturday. So guess what? I came on a Saturday. When I ordered, she said it was not available tonight. Like what?? If a restaurant owns up to saying a certain special dish is served only ONCE a week, as a customer, I would expect the restaurant to honor it and have it available, ESPECIALLY when the restaurant is not busy and the excuse was not that they ran out. Then my boyfriend tries to order a half & half, and guess what? THAT WAS ALSO NOT AVAILABLE. He ended up getting the Firfir, which he was satisfied with. But I was still determined to get something close to the Kurt Sega item, so I asked the server if there was any similar raw beef dish. She pointed out the Kitfo, but then immediately mentioned that I wouldn't like it because it was uncooked. I told her I understood (didn't I just try to order the Kurt Sega?), and that I wanted to try it anyways. I reiterated with her that I wanted the beef raw (because on the menu it stated you can choose between cooked, rare, and raw). When the food came out, she stated again that I may not like the raw beef, but added the courtesy that the cook can cook it for me if I didn't like it. At this point, I appreciated the gesture of service, but now in the back of my mind I was starting to think 'why is this lady so adamant about me not having raw beef here?'. I was almost expecting now to get food poisoning from it. The food itself, was delicious!! Pictures included. Despite the poor experience, personally, I would still go back here JUST for the food (and I didn't get diarrhea!). And I will be making sure to call in every time I decide to go in to triple check everything. TIP(s): Even though the restaurant says it opens late, the kitchen actually closes around 10. I had been craving Ethiopian food for awhile and found this place through a Groupon deal they're running. The food was alright; I've definitely had far better Ethiopian food elsewhere. We ordered the kitfo dulet (raw minced beef), vegetarian sampler, doro wat key (chicken), and lega tibs (lamb). Everything was served over injera bread, and you traditionally eat it with your fingers (no utensils). Some of the dishes came out a bit lukewarm in terms of temperature. The kitfo dulet was the most flavorful dish and had a nice, spicy kick. I wouldn't recommend bringing a date here, as the interior looks a bit divey and a tad bit shady. Service was mediocre as far as attitude goes. I wanted my husband to try some Ethiopian food, groupon brought us here. So, i called them to check their closing time since it was labor day. Clearly, she wasnt able to communicate( gave a time frame 10 to 11) So anyway, i went in there and it looked like a shady place. Torn sofas, machine games, extremely dark room, etc gave me a nauseated feeling. The worst of all was their broken commode inside the ladies rest room; grossiest toilet ive ever seen. I so wanted to walk out, but I stayed. So coming to the service, which was just okay. They had no silverware, and she literally TOUCHED my husband's injera to indicate eat the fish with injera using your hands( question their sanitary practices). Next, the food was so cold, i had to ask her to heat it. Injera supply was so low. I have been to Queen of Sheba in addison and they give a basket full of Injeras. I ordered a vegetarian platter which was really cold and bland. And my husband wanted a sandwich but they were running out of the bread, So he ordered Tilapia fish coz she insisted so much. Last when it comes to paying, i overheard a conversation they didnt wanted to accept credit cards from another group. And they DO NOT know how to redeem the groupon. She literally took my phone inside the kitchen for long time, to redeem it; which made me nervous. There are only 2 Ethiopian restaurants in the Dallas area that we know of. We throughly enjoyed our meal here. Very authentic as far as we can tell. The lamb was spicy and tasteful as was the vegetable combo. We would have liked more combination dishes to choose from but we will definitely be back to try more selections. read more

I see this place has several negative or eh reviews, but I'm really pretty happy with it! I'd put off trying Ethiopian food for a while because uh, do they eat dirt and flies? I was glad to learn that they do not! I've only eaten there around the lunch hour and it's fairly empty at that time. The staff is bare bones, but that doesn't matter when you're the only customer. I haven't tried anything too crazy off the menu (I just can't do raw meat), but the sambusa, yeawaze tibs, & vegetarian combo are DELICIOUS. I would have given it 5 stars, but it's not overly cheap. I went here with a Groupon. The location is in a strip mall at the Northwest corner of Buckingham and Jupiter. It's right on the Garland/Richardson line. I've had Ethiopian once before in Spokane with my vegan son. I loved it. This trip to Gojo was with my daughter. She didn't like the injera bread so the trip was kinda a bust for her. We got her a Beef Tip entree and I got the Vegetarian. We also tried the Tamitam Firfir salad. WATCH OUT FOR THE RAW SLICED PEPPERS, THEY ARE REALLY HOT! It was great after I stopped crying and picked out the peppers. If you put lettuce in it, it would be a wonderful Italian/American salad. There is NO WAY I an eating raw beef. I really enjoyed my food. I wasn't as crazy about the Beef plate. Everything was served on a large round (medium pizza size) piece of injera bread, They also give you a large portion of more injera bread. The veggie selections were delicious. I loved the cabbage, collard greens, green beans with carrots & one other item I cannot even identify. Two other items were pretty bland until I figured out you could mix n match if you liked. The injera bread is like a soft, spongy, pliable brown tortilla. It has a sour whang to it that reminds you of really good San Francisco sourdough bread. We were the only people in the restaurant and it took them quite a bit to get our food to us. I could hear them cooking it and knew it was very freshly prepared. I found this reassuring. They were out of some beef entrees. The folks who took care of us were quite nice and the place does have a different rather exotic atmosphere. I felt like I was on a "Food Adventure" and I liked it. I loved the African wall hangings and then there was the ONE of Marilyn Monroe over the cash register. Their Health Report scores are respectable. I found a Groupon for this place and decided to give it a try. I had been wanting to go to a ethiopian restaurant for awhile, so was excited. However the interior of the place did not give a good impression. It didn't seem clean. The service was not very good either. Didn't seem very welcomed and when we got our food I found a piece of hair. I would not recommend this place to anybody. The food tasted ok until I found the hair. This place was not good, the staff where rude, the food was below average, the waiter didn't know the menu and could barely speak English. They didn't bother explain the food to us the Fish we had was dry and over done. They also seemed to show preferential treatment for a couple that came in after us. I went there tonight expecting a dirty restaurant and not so great food. I was pleasantly surprised to walk into a clean restaurant and the food was very good! I had the Talapia Tidbits and the Vegetarian Combo, which is a sampler of various veggie entres on top of the sponge-y injera bread. I liked to really liked what I ordered (except for the collard greens as I am not a collard greens fan to begin with) and would order both dishes again and I was very full and had to get a take out box. I also ordered the Sambusa appetizers, too. They were pretty good but I wouldn't order them again. The server was very sweet and waved "bye bye" to me with a smile on her face when I left. My friend and I came here and had the beef tibs and vegetable combination with three samusas. It was our first time eating Ethiopian, so we didn't know what we were doing. The lady though, was really nice and showed us how. She definitely made the experience from possibly bad to really good. My experience here was awful. It was dinner on a Friday night and we were the only ones there. The staff was rude and ignored us most of the time. The dinner was bland. Before I begin this review, I want it known I've had Ethiopian before at multiple places. It's not new to me, and I find it quite delicious. It was hard for me to find, even though I knew where it was on the map. It was hidden around the corner, REALLY tucked away. No signs were saying it was there, other than the name above the door once you found it. I went in, and said the girl behind the counter said hi, then silence. There were two guys on the side puffing away on a hookah, and a floor with some kind of brown smear across all of the seams. I'm guessing there was some kind of tile colorization going on or something, not sure. No other customers. The waitress was mostly helpful, and filled my drink whenever necessary along with making sure my injera bread was supplied as necessary. I picked up take out food at Gojo after buying a coupon from a group buying site. I tried searching for a menu online but without success. Called the restaurant and a very nice lady helped me choose two dishes, a vegetarian combo and a beef dish. Finding the location using different mapping devices (including my own car's) was a challenge, since there is another Buckingham Road...really hard to find it but I eventually managed. Now, the most important: the food. It was tasty, especially the veggie combo. The beef could have been a bit tender, but the spices and sauce were great. My partner and I stumbled upon this restaurant and decided to take a chance on it. We had both had Ethiopian before, but only in a different city. In short: We were pleased! The food was excellent and the serving size was ample. In addition to the entrees on their online and main menu (varying in price from 10.99 to 13.99), they also offer half-sizes of each item for 5.99. If you're new to Ethiopian food, or just the restaurant, I'd recommend getting a few different half-sizes. My partner and I did just that so we could sample more of what Gojo had to offer. The wait staff was attentive and re-filled my water each time it needed refilling. Additionally, they provided extra injera (the sponge-like bread) whenever it was needed. Very tasty place! I went with my bestie, we had been craving Ethiopian for a while and needed a fix. Gojo did not disappoint. We each had the vegetarian combo and its certainly one of my favorites around town. The shiro might be the best. I normally like the spicy items best like the yemesir wot, but the tekil gomen was so delicious, I ate both servings. The Bestie liked the gomen best. One of the things I liked best was that each dish was not overly oily, which has been an issue in other restaurants. Went there at 2:00 pm so we were the only guests at the restaurant. After walking in to the darkly lit place it was apparent the place was lacking cleanliness. Had a groupon and had to only one day to use it. When placing the order I got the lamb and my wife had the chicken dish which was the most expensive entrees on the menu. So we were expecting a large portion with the large price tag. The service provided by the first waitress was mediocre. She asked if we had Ethiopian food before. When they brought the food out the Injera bread was cold and entrée was barely warm. The goat was sufficient contents but the chicken dish was a huge rip-off. There was one chicken leg in a sweet brown sauce. I was thinking this is supposed to be the most expensive thing on the menu at $15 and you give one chicken leg which cost you less than $1. The lamb was somewhat tasty. The chicken lacked any taste and was rather bland. The biggest kicker was when the we asked for a to go box the lady who came later (maybe the owner) said we only order one dish so she can only give one box. Really lady. Really. We order 2 entrees but your orders lacked contents and you have the nerve to tell us you cant give me another to go box. Tried the shiro at several local Ethiopian restaurants, because it is my favorite food and I wanted to take some for the boss's birthday pot-luck. The owner here made the best shiro by far. She takes pride in her work, and it shows in the excellent product. Also, they have beers on tap, and provide it in a substantial mug for an insubstantial price. Always a good thing. read more
