Admission, shoes and harness rental were complimentary, along with a quick instructional demo of the auto-belay system. Yelp schwag cards were strategically placed along the climbing routes, and we scrambled to collect as many cards and climbs in for the night. There were also healthy treats like Kind bars, cuties, and water when our tired arms needed a break. It was a fun way to get acquainted with what the gym has to offer, catch up with Yelp friends old and new, and generally have a very Bend kind of Friday night.

It is located in the parking lot of a brewery that looked super cute with tons of seating both indoor and out. We got our dinners + 2 cheese plates (one for that night and one to take on our road trip). The lady that took our order didn't really like the idea that we were taking the cheese plate to go because she said they have a nice display and silverware at the brewery for it. We thought that was kind of strange, but when we ended up getting it, it was a super full box with a ton of goodies that must of been a bit of a challenge to get in the box. It probably would of been a beautiful cheese plate if we stayed there and had some beer or wine. I got the wet burrito for dinner that had griddle potatoes, smoked turtle beans, grilled mixed vegetables, roasted chilis, & caramelized onions smothered in hot enchilada sauce. I really liked it until my friend pointed out it tasted kind of like marinara and I couldn't get that out of my head. It was still good, but not the normal burrito taste. My friend got the fried rice and liked it, but thought it was better for breakfast.

Good news…read more Bad news first is this: The Drake has been sold to new owners and TONIGHT, APRIL 12, WILL BE THE LAST DAY OF SERVICE at The Drake with the original owner and the current menu. So if you're hankering for the mac n cheese or shrimp n grits or veg burger or any of the menu items, after today they are history. I started eating at The Drake in their first week of business and had many, many, many meals there over the years but things change and so, it seems, has the popularity of The Drake. Now the good news. The new owners are a trio and one of them is also one of the owners of the inestimable Ken's Artisan Pizza in Portland that opened its' Bend location last year. (Go! Even if you have to stand in line for 45 minutes like I did.) The first news of this ownership change was that they would keep the name and current focus of The Drake. But local television news reports that after The Drake closes today it will be reimagined with a new name and design and menu. The opening for the new place is currently said to be Memorial Day weekend. I don't live in Bend anymore but there is still a family home there and so I visit on occasion and knowing a "Ken's" owner is involved in the new enterprise may make me brave the wicked-bad downtown parking to try this new place. In the meantime, I remember how fun and delicious it could be to eat at The Drake.

Verdict: Zydeco is an outstanding restaurant in virtually every way. No negatives to report. The place is popular - arriving just before opening on a weekday, there was a line to get in. Reservations are definitely a good idea here. Our early arrival in line allowed us to choose a good table in the back, where it wouldn't be too hectic. That too was a good idea as the place gets loud with conversation when it fills up. Music wasn't loud, just the people. The menu isn't huge but there are quite a few, varied choices. Given the meal was a bit of a splurge for us, I essentially ignored the prices, which are not trivial by any means. Fine dining entails spending money. Zydeco has a ton of reviews and as the menu apparently doesn't change, I'll just say everything we ordered was great. Cocktails too. The Bramble Down is exquisite. Service was top tier as well. Timely, attentive, professional without being stiff. The capstone to our experience involved the bill. We actually had a gift card from 2017 - nine years ago. While it certainly didn't cover the whole bill, or even half, it was a nice way to defray costs. Unfortunately, when the server ran the gift card, it showed no balance. Not sure why but perhaps over the years, the card had been erased by stray EMF. Despite that and given we provided the card receipt, the restaurant honored the card for the full amount anyway. After all that hard work, our family always ends up back at El Rodeo. It's our go-to spot and has been for years. The service is always great and the people working there are genuinely friendly and kind. It feels like a real family restaurant where they're happy you showed up. The bar is also a fantastic place to grab a drink or margarita, play a little video poker, and end up talking to half the locals in Bend. Somehow you go in for dinner and leave feeling like you attended a neighborhood reunion. The food is exactly what you want when you're craving Mexican: hot, good, and a lot of it. I have never once left there hungry or disappointed. Plates show up looking like they were designed for a lumberjack who skipped lunch. They recently remodeled the bar, which looks nice... but personally I believe Mexican restaurants should be built once in about 1987 and then left exactly the same forever. It's part of the charm. That said, the remodel won't stop me from going back regularly. Great people, great food, strong margaritas, and the kind of place that makes Bend feel like home. Five stars all day.

Everything comes out hot, flavorful, and consistent, which is why it's a place people here keep coming back to year after year. The owner is super friendly and we have the same few servers every time who even Renee our go to orders. My parents love their Chile Rellano with green sauce. They also have one of the best happy hours in Bend -- great prices, plenty of options, and that friendly, familiar vibe that makes it feel like a neighborhood favorite.
