It is located in the parking lot of a brewery that looked super cute with tons of seating both indoor and out. We got our dinners + 2 cheese plates (one for that night and one to take on our road trip). The lady that took our order didn't really like the idea that we were taking the cheese plate to go because she said they have a nice display and silverware at the brewery for it. We thought that was kind of strange, but when we ended up getting it, it was a super full box with a ton of goodies that must of been a bit of a challenge to get in the box. It probably would of been a beautiful cheese plate if we stayed there and had some beer or wine. I got the wet burrito for dinner that had griddle potatoes, smoked turtle beans, grilled mixed vegetables, roasted chilis, & caramelized onions smothered in hot enchilada sauce. I really liked it until my friend pointed out it tasted kind of like marinara and I couldn't get that out of my head. It was still good, but not the normal burrito taste. My friend got the fried rice and liked it, but thought it was better for breakfast.

The proportion and textures were such a great blend--not too sweet and the whole foods added that special touch. The potatoes were also licked clean as well as the mushroom gravy with biscuits and tofu scramble. The bed of arugula under those dishes gave them a wholesome boost. Our eyes and stomaches were fully satisfied. We'll be back again this week and probably get the same thing since the combo was so good though there were other enticements on the menu! The location reminded me of a food festival, and the bathrooms nearby in the main building are clean with cool industrial finishes.

That's fine, places get busy quickly on a Sunday morning. Ended up waiting nearly an hour. It happens and sometimes it's worth it for good food. Our waitress was kind but clearly needed more help. Took her 15 minutes to get to our table. I asked her to level with me: How long would our food really take, because we have two antsy kids. She says 20 minutes. That's quick! Okay, we order. 10 minutes later, they say sorry we are out of orange juice. We did not order orange juice. They say they do have chocolate milk, which we did order. Glass (like, adult glass) comes for my kid and the guy explains they are out of chocolate milk so they mixed cold milk with hot cocoa powder. Looks chunky. He apologizes and says he needs to go across the street to get orange juice and chocolate milk so we can wait if we want. We don't. We just want to eat and leave. I order iced coffee (on the menu), they only have canned cold brew. Not ideal but fine. Burger (something I could honestly make at home) comes with dry breakfast potatoes. The flattest pancakes I've ever seen, complete with black grease marks from the griddle. I appreciate that the patio was nice and there was a water bowl for our dog but there were so many rookie mistakes that it felt like a restaurant that just opened last week and we're working out kinks. I'm actually annoyed at the 5-star reviews because there's no way they are at the same place we did.

Bad news. Good news…read more Bad news first is this: The Drake has been sold to new owners and TONIGHT, APRIL 12, WILL BE THE LAST DAY OF SERVICE at The Drake with the original owner and the current menu. So if you're hankering for the mac n cheese or shrimp n grits or veg burger or any of the menu items, after today they are history. I started eating at The Drake in their first week of business and had many, many, many meals there over the years but things change and so, it seems, has the popularity of The Drake. Now the good news. The new owners are a trio and one of them is also one of the owners of the inestimable Ken's Artisan Pizza in Portland that opened its' Bend location last year. (Go! Even if you have to stand in line for 45 minutes like I did.) The first news of this ownership change was that they would keep the name and current focus of The Drake. But local television news reports that after The Drake closes today it will be reimagined with a new name and design and menu. The opening for the new place is currently said to be Memorial Day weekend. I don't live in Bend anymore but there is still a family home there and so I visit on occasion and knowing a "Ken's" owner is involved in the new enterprise may make me brave the wicked-bad downtown parking to try this new place. In the meantime, I remember how fun and delicious it could be to eat at The Drake.

# Lunch Review - El Rodeo - Bend Oregon…read more This is a review of a lunch with a friend at El Rodeo, a Mexican restaurant in Bend, Oregon. The staff was very friendly, attentive, polite, and professional. The basic ambiance is clean but worn and feels like it is from a different decade. It also seemed a bit scattered, with tables and chairs not quite in alignment. On the positive side, the washroom was spotlessly clean. Chips and tasty salsa were quickly brought to the table. Soon after, our server came over to take our order. He was excellent. The food was prepared and delivered to the table quickly. I had the Asado Burrito. It was very filling and well prepared, although a little on the bland side. My friend noted that the shredded beef in his enchiladas and tacos was a bit tough. At $33 for lunch for two, plus tip, I thought the price was quite good considering the rapidly increasing cost of eating out in Bend. I was not blown away, but I would return for a quick, casual, and filling lunch.
