Our tour started off by the driver being 15 minutes late to pick us up because he was confused about the entrance of our hotel... Once we got in the van, there was one other couple so we introduced ourselves for the long ride to Reims. I knew it would be a long ride, but expected to be taken care of along the way. Instead, we sat in silence the whole way, no radio, no commentary from our guide, nothing. I tried to make conversation a couple times, but that didn't seem to go anywhere. The guide never asked us if we needed to stop for the bathroom, didn't tell us about any water provided, and didn't ask if the temperature was OK. Once we got to Reims, the cathedral was spectacular! It truly takes your breath away. But the amount of historical commentary we got from the guide was minimal and I ended up looking on Wikipedia for a real background of the cathedral (as it turned out some of the guide's facts were off, as well). After leaving the cathedral, I asked if there was a toilet somewhere (because after a 2 hour car ride and walking around, I would think it would be reasonable to have to use the bathroom - something I was never asked). The guide said he would ask in a nearby restaurant to see if we could use their toilet and instead of asking, he just checked inside to see if they had one. So when I entered the restaurant they looked confused and not too happy that I was just there to use their toilet. After feeling thoroughly embarrassed, we got back in the car and the guide asked us if we wanted to see the Roman arch or go tour some wineries with the extra hour we had. We chose the arch. But after driving in circles for 20 minutes (again, in silence), all the while looking confused, our guide discovered that the arch was covered for restoration and couldn't be viewed. We departed for the winery we had a reservation at, but arrived too early to go in and too late to do anything else, so he just drove us around the small town of Passy-Grigny. When we finally went into the winery, the lunch with champagne pairing and guided tour was fantastic!! The winery guide took over and did a spectacular job of educating us about the champagne making process and the cuisine of that region. We wrapped up the tour and our driver/guide took us back to Paris (you guessed it, in silence). Although the main highlights of this tour were really worth seeing/doing, the guide (aka. glorified driver) put a real damper on the experience for me. For a tour that costs more than $200/person, I expected excellent service and a wealth of knowledge. We got neither. read more
